Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the heat continued to bear down on the lawn, many of the tables and chairs were set up in the spots where there was shade, so no one got overheated or anything. That would be very rude for the first day in Fandom, after all.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Adora was having A Day, but at least there was food and plenty of it. Some of it she even recognised.

It may have looked like she'd just helped herself to an entire platter, but she did have enough table manner to know that'd be rude. Instead, she'd found an empty platter and filled it with a little bit from all the others.

See, completely different.

"Is that all for you?" Shuri asked curiously.

Adora didn't curl protectively over her food and growl, but the instinct was there. "Maybe?"

She was a growing girl, Shuri.

"You didn't get the potato salad, did you?" Shuri asked. "I think it has raisins in it, and that's disgusting."

Adora wasn't entirely sure what either of those were, but she poked at what she thought was potato salad, which seemed to be raisin free. "You're not just saying that because you want the potato salad?"

You didn't know the lengths people had been willing to go to when there was limited number of their preferred colour of ration bar.

"I do not want the potato salad," Shuri said. "I am not a fan of mayonnaise." She smiled. "Hi. I'm Shuri."

"Adora." Smile. Beat. "What's mayonnaise?"

"What's wrong with half the food here," Shuri commented dryly. "It's made of eggs and oil--the white stuff used to hold the salads all together over there."

She pointed to a bowl of potato salad.

"Huh, so that's what that's called." Adora rubbed some between her fingers, because her table manners were still somewhat dubious. "Feels different to the stuff in Bright Moon."

That's probably because Bright Moon only used eggs and oil.

"I had a cooking course here where it featured prominently," Shuri said with a shudder. "I don't recommend it."

Adora licked her fingers, because again, table manners were a work in progress. "I guess I can see how that might be a bit much."

Look, food preferences actually mattering was an even newer concept than table manners, or cutlery, or food that wasn't compressed protein slurry.

"If it was in moderation, perhaps," Shuri said, "but that wasn't really Summer's...thing."

"Are there even that many different ways to use it?" Adora knew she didn't know that much about cooking, but it only seemed to show up in a handful of ways.

"You would think not, but Summer opened my eyes to a number of frankly terrifying options," Shuri said.

"Okay, someone's settling in just fine," Karolina noted with a little smile, as she came over with her little basket filled with small gift bags. "Hi, welcome to Fandom."

It wasn't so much settling in as the repression kicking into overdrive.

"Thanks?"

Well, she was taking advantage of the food, that was good enough for Karolina.

"I'm Karolina, the guidance counselor at this school," she said, nodding towards the castle. (She wasn't sure why she did that - this girl was probably, hopefully, already aware that was the school.) "And I have a little welcome gift for you."

She presented Adora with a small, glittery gift bag. Inside it, she would find a map of the island, another of where all the classrooms were located at the school, a $5 gift card to the Perk, and a handwritten little card with Karolina's contact info on it.

Well, those maps certainly weren't going to form the start of a wall of crazy as Adora attempted to cope with this situation by overplanning an escape attempt or anything.

"Uh huh, great, can you guide me to a way off this island," she asked with a very badly faked nonchalance. "Your causeway is broken."
