Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the coming fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Which was an interesting tactic, considering Wayne's tactic for finding his.little sibling was to not-nearly-as-subtly-as-he-thought scope out name tags.

So he was squinting at the lack of name tag on her shirt, the lack of name on the name tag on her fingers, and then, finally, her.

"Name?" he prompted.

"Age/sex/location?" Maeve quipped, because she was incapable of answering that seriously. "Maeve."

"Seventeen/male/Fandom Island."

Whether or not Wayne said that as a quip back or with sincerity was...literally impossible to discern.

But he got the name he was looking for, so he was holding out his hand to her. "Maeve. How are ya now? M'Wayne. I'll be yer big sibling 'round here."

It took a second for Maeve to get on that handshake thing, and the only reason she did it was because she was distracted with the question, "Big sibling?"

Wayne nodded, tucking his thumbs into his belt loops and straightening his shoulders in a upstanding way.

"Means I'm here to make sure you find your footing alright, answer any of yer questions, and warn you, if ya haven't been already, that this place might as well be called Patsy Cline...'cause it's Crazy."

"Crazy like there's a lot of drama? I've seen American television," Maeve said.

And her own life was kind of nuts but she wasn't about to get into that.

"No," said Wayne, looking distinctly uncomfortable for a moment. "Crazy like this place's met its quota on tom fuckery a while ago, but then forgot to pump the brakes. Crazy like sometimes the clothes go on strike crazy. Crazy like we had a whole batch of students who didn't show up because they got stuck in a volcano kidnapped by a goat demon crazy. Crazy like we once all got a shark alien STD from a hot tub party that turned us all into mutants crazy."

Yes, he was still completely convinced that was all Sidon's falt.

"That...kinda crazy."

Finished with a little grumble of a sound because he didn't like the sound of any of it, either, Maeve, but them's the breaks.

Maeve didn't believe a word of it, but she figured this was just your regular old tradition of pranking the new kid.

Sure, there'd been the guy who didn't understand airplanes, but that she could at least explain away.

"Oh, is that all."

"No," Wayne squinted off into the distance, "it's not..."

That squint lingered for a moment before it returned to Maeve.

"But it's a start."

Maeve nodded.

"Done hazing the new girl yet?"

She was going to meet her roommate and take this back.

"Don't believe in hazin'," Wayne informed her stoutly. "But yer not likeleh to believe me tellin' you that, so we'll see how you feel in about a week or so. Meantime," he gave her a nod, "I'm in room 301, if you need anything. I also do breakfast every Monday morning in the third floor common room, if you get a chance to swing by. And, uhhh....."

This was his first time doing this, and so he wasn't really sure he was hitting all the notes right, and sort of trailed off with another squint.

And nodded again.

"Got it," Maeve said with a nod. "Well, thanks for that."

She'd be back in a week to WTF properly.

Wayne did a small bounce, lifting his heels, then falling back down on them.

"...questions so far?"

"Know anywhere that's hiring?" Probably not the question he'd expected, but it was the most important one for her.

But that was an actual, practical question that Wayne was honestly a little impressed by, because that was the kind of logical, real-world thinking that he could really get behind.

"Nothing comes to mind in particular," he admitted, "but you could always ask around. Probably lots of the shops'll be lookin' with the new students on the island. What're you interested in? Mebbe start there and work yer way out."

"I'm really interested in anything that pays in money," Maeve admitted. "That should give me options."
