Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the coming fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nell only hoped that she'd manage to be good big sibling. She'd carefully put on her name tag and tried to figure out how to say her sibling's name quietly under her breath. "Way Wooshan? Weheye Wooeezhan?"

She sighed, worried more that the first thing she'd do was offend him or her by mangling their name. So she went looking for a name tag that matched.

He didn't know there were nametags, but her attempt at his name was close enough for him to recognize it. "Hello?" He came over to her. "Why are people expecting me to be here?"

"Oh! Are you - oh gosh, I don't want to mangle you'un's name, so I apologize in advance - Way Wooshan?" Nell ducked her head a little feeling a bit embarrassed. "Um, I'm not rightly sure how they know things like that here. I just turned up unexpectedly myself and they had a big brother and a room and classes and everything just all set for me."

She smiled up at him. "Anyways, I'm sure not showing my manners. I'm Nell Ingram. They assigned me to be your big sister," which could only be funny given how small she was, "and to kinda help you settle in to Fandom. It sure is nice to meet you."

He smiled, pushing away the pain at memories of his own shijie. There would be "tequila" later. "Then as my senior sister, you may call me Wei Ying." He placed his hands together in front of him, right hand holding his flute and bowed. "I am pleased to meet you as well."

Nell hesitated only a moment, then mimicked his bow. "Thank you, Wei Ying. I'm honored. Though it kinda seems silly to think of you as a 'little' brother."

She was quiet for a moment, thinking of her own siblings back home that she hadn't seen since before she'd got stuck here. And hardly at all even since John and Leah had rescued her by marrying her. She took a deep breath and smiled at Wei Ying. "Do you play that flute? it looks awfully nice."

Wei Wuxian looked at the flute in his hand, as if he'd forgotten it was there. "Oh. Yes, sometimes." He tucked it into his belt. "Are there music studies at this school?"

"Not at the school that I've heard of, though I can't be sure," Nell said. "But there might be some through the Community Center or online."

She looked at him curiously. "So you weren't expecting to be here apparently. Where were you'un expecting to be?"

Dead. "I hadn't made any plans," he said. "What sort of classes do they have here?"

"Hmmm... well, I'll be taking a course in Ethics this fall," she said. "There's classes in science and weaponry and survival, government, economics..."

She thought for a moment. "And then have some fun ones over the summer like 'Try Not To Die' or 'Swimming with Fishes' and things like that. Those can be strange, but lots of fun!"
