Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the coming fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Summer had to give him a mildly withering look at that, because, really, Barry? That was the conversation you wanted to start right now with the twenty-year-old you were kinda dating?

"I mean, I guess so," she said, taking another look around and feeling relieved that she could at least see it for most of them. But honestly she was just glad to pretty much officially be past that super awkward threshold where some of her students were people she used to take class and party with. "They are teenagers..."

"Sorry, bad choice of words," he said shaking his head. "Most of these kids haven't gone through half the shit you and I have fucking experienced."

He waved at the kids who had just gotten off the bus. "I'm just thinking all of the shit that's ahead of them. I guess that's what I'm trying to get at. And now I get to be part of that."

He gave her a small smile and shrugged. "Hopefully I don't fuck them up too badly."

She was maaaaaybe a little self-conscious about lately...

...but that? That she got, especially with another glance around as he explained.

And then Summer gave Barry a sympathetic, understanding smirk, lifting a hand for a reassuring pat on his shoulder.

"If you don't, someone else will," she said, "and if no one else does, then the island will. So isn't it best they learn from someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about?"

“That’s oddly comforting that someone may do it worse than me,” he said giving her a grateful look. “Thanks. Any bits of advice you might have? After all you have more experience than me with this shit?”

"Yeaaah," said Summer, "if you're looking for guidance to avoid fucking up your students, you've got the wrong girl. I have students I'm pretty sure will never forgive me for the things I've made them do with bananas..."

Take that as you will.

"But you'll be fiiiiine," she insisted. "You're awesome, and your class is going to be awesome, and the students are going to love that shit."

“Yeah. I hope so. I just don’t want to be one of those asshole teachers teaching shit like the school I was in before Fandom,” he said looking less worried now.

...

“And what exactly did you do with bananas?”

Nope. Not letting that one slide, Summer.

She was sort of wondering if he would.

"Two words," said Summer. "Banana meatloaf. And I can't in a million year imagine you being the type of asshole teacher that'd be teachihng at other schools."

“Banana meatloaf?

Oh. The horror.

“I’m sorry I asked. Anyway, if I turn into a bitter science teacher out of touch with the real world please just smother me in my sleep,” he joked. “So are you all prepped for you economics course?”

"Banana meatloaf," Summer assured him, "was only just the beginning. And I promise I will not let you become That Person, if I see even a hint of a sports jacket elbow patch, we are going to have words, and I'm just about as ready as I'll ever be, I think."

She...mostly just sort of made it up as she went along. It was fine.

“Can I sit in on one of your classes? You know. Learn from the master?” He teased. Kind of. She did have more teaching experience than he did.

Oh, yeah, that wouldn't be any pressure at all, trying to teach a basic excuse to go shopping under the potentially judgy eye of a cute super-genius with coorperations when all she had was a blown-up jello restaurant and a multidimensional general store (that she didn't own anymore, but...come on...that was just a technicality).

Buuuuut....

"I'll show you mine if you show me yours," she offered.

So. Out of context that phrase could have a lot of meanings. Which is why Barry’s brain blue screened for about five seconds before he snapped out of it and put the comment into context.

“Oh! Sure!”

Is it weird that he’s way passed his teens and his voice cracked. “Any time, Uh any class you want.”

That went way better than Summer could have even dreamed of. She was far from blue screening, but she needed a few seconds herself to just...well...fawn a little.

"Then we've got a deal," she said. "I can see how you're doing, and you...can see how it's done."

“That sounds good to-“

And Barry’s brain blue screened again as the out of context notion struck him again. What was going on here?

And his face was a brilliant red.

“Yep. Sounds good,” he croaked out when he found his voice again.

It was the gift that kept on giving, and Summer found herself staring into the (very red) face of an idea that she desperately wanted to pursue, but also knew there would be way better opportunities than standing in the whole teacher coral at the welcome picnic.

So, for now, she just bit her lip and felt her own face go a little pink, then asked, "Speaking of plans, though...when should we do movie pizza night?"

"I-"

There was a few seconds there where he had to analyze what Summer just said just to make sure there wasn't any kind of euphemisms being used.

Okay. Now he could think.

"How about Tuesday?" he asked, after clearing his throat. (Just so he could get through one sentence without his voice cracking.)

"And it doesn't have to be action films if you want to watch something else. I'm good with the... company."

Don't tempt her to take an opportunity to torture you with sappy romantic chick flicks like that, Barry!

"I do know of another really stupid one that involves giant cat monsters and a Mexican space armada," Summer offered instead, "but I did pick the last one, so it can be your turn if you want.

"And Tuesday sounds great."

"Good. And I'm pretty much down for anything."

...

"Movie wise."

Damn it.

"Though the Mexican space armada and giant cat monsters sound good."

Just no Bollywood. But that's a conversation for another day.
