Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the coming fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It occurred to Wei Wuxian a moment after he walked past the blonde girl that she might have been saying his name. He turned around. "Do you mean Wèi Wúxiàn?"

"Probably, but I think my way is more fun to say," Eleanor replied as she was scoping out the new roommate. "Yeah, so I'm Eleanor, I'm your new roommate. Couple of things? I haven't cleaned the room yet so don't freak out if there's a huge pile of laundry on your side of the room and a bunch of empty liquor bottles."

"I think my way's more fun, and I've been saying it longer so I know I'm right," Wei Wuxian said. "We're sharing a room? A single room?" and because he knows what's important, "Are there any liquor bottles still full?"

Eleanor still thought her pronunciation was more fun but whatever.

“Sorry hot stuff, it’s a single room that we have to share,” she said with a grin. “And there’s at least one bottle that’s probably full but it’s cheap tequila which I only drink mixed with margarita mix. Let me guess: this place is weird and you need a drink?”

The genders could mix and alcohol was permitted. This was definitely not like Cloud Recesses! (He carefully didn't think about his favorite part of Cloud Recesses - the part that he'd left behind when he'd fallen.) "You'll have to keep your stuff on your side," he told her. He had a brother. He'd negotiated this stuff before. (He was definitely not thinking about Jiang Cheng either, but he suddenly felt that need for alcohol increasing.) "I like to stay up late and have friends over." Once he met new people. "But I have light and sound dampening talismans that can help," if you're boring, "if you prefer to sleep early. A screen will help. What's tequila?"

“Welllll if you’re bringing people in to party? I’m down with that. If you need to get your mojo going, I can hang out in the common room or sleep in the ball pit. As for tequila? It’s the most horrible tasting alcohol that will fork your shirt up. It’s a lot of fun done in the right way.”

"Do you use dual cultivation to 'get your mojo going'?" She didn't look like a cultivator, but who knew? He'd have to find out what a 'ball pit' was later. "I prefer good tasting alcohol, but I do like to have fun." Especially when the person he wanted to dual cultivate with had been left behind forever.

Eleanor stood there and was very confused. This was a common state at times.

"Okay when you say dual cultivation are you talking about, like, growing carrots or-"

And that would be an obscene hand gesture which would resemble...

"-forking? And if you like fun and alcohol? You so need to go to Caritas. They don't card and on Wednesdays my buddy Summer makes the best jello shots."

Well. Best for Eleanor? Yes. Other people? Maybe not.

"Oh but stay away from the Devil's nest. They card and the owner is a vampire. Like for real vampire bloodsucker. I'm not forking with you or trying to mess your head."

"Carrots?" He stared at her for a moment, trying to parse what she'd said. "No. Cultivation is a lifelong journey to cultivated your spiritual energy. Dual cultivation is a technique used by cultivators to balance your yin and yang energy while sharing your spiritual energy with a partner." He considered. "So, this." He copied the obscene gesture. "But it's spiritual."

"Caritas sounds fun. I'm not worried about vampires, though." He spun his flute in his fingers. "I can handle it."

Eleanor gave the flute a doubtful look but shrugged. "Okay, well I can't say I didn't warn you," she said agreeably. "Worst case scenario I have the room to myself again. And the whole cultivation thing sounds interesting. Though I have to say if you doing it right? Any kind of forking can be a spiritual experience. If you know what I mean."

And yes, she was raising her hand for a high five.

He didn't understand the gesture, but he had a pretty good sense of the meaning, so he smiled and lifted his hand and held it in the air, mirroring the way she had raised her hand.

"Yeah, okay, this is a high five and you're leaving me hanging," she said with a chuckle. "When I do this you go like this."

And she gave his palm a slap.

"It's a common way to show agreement or appreciation. Wow. I'm like, totally a teacher right now!"

First she helped her little sibling and now she's teaching culture to others. Totally a red letter day for Eleanor Shellstrop.

"I can use the help," he admitted. "Things are very different here from back-" Not home. He didn't have a home now. "-back here I came from. For one, people here wear much less clothing." He carefully kept his eyes on her face.

"I know, isn't it great?" Eleanor said happily. "In fact it used to be a tradition for the guys to go shirtless during the picnic. Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case today."

"That's too bad," Wei Wuxian said. He wasn't sure if he'd want to strip down that far, but he wouldn't have minded looking. "It doesn't seem like people are concerned much with their reputations around here."

"Well, I don't know about that," Eleanor said with a shrug. "I think that just depends on the person and what they want their reputation to be. I prefer the reputation of a loner who just wants to have a good time. Or am I missing some context her because you're from-"

Wait. Did he even mention where he was from? Did she even ask?

"Wherever you are from?"

"Yiling," he said. "I mean a reputation of being honorable, filial, and modest."

"Well, I know two of those words," Eleanor freely admitting her ignorance. "And you won't probably find a lot of that in America. Sorry, bud."
