Today the grassy area where the games were played was cleared out except for several huge sprinklers that were shooting water all over five very familiar, to Earthlings plastic mats.

"We are playing Sprinkler Twister!" Anakin announced through the bullhorn. "Get excited. You will be divided into five teams of four! I will spin this spinner--" he held up the spinner, "which will tell you what color to put your hands and/or feet! Then I will spin again and you must move a hand or a foot until you fall down and we all laugh at you."

This was another game mostly for the audience, yes.

"Listen for your names!"

"Palanquins?" Astrid asked, taking a moment to picture it, and it would definitely be making its way into a sketchbook later. "I can see that. I mean, best they can get are the rickshaws, though. Close, but not quite the same."

"Maybe they could do rickshaw races, like those old chariot races from Roman times," Mae mused. "That'd be pretty fun to watch!"

She should watch out, she might give Anakin ideas.

"Like in Sparticus," said Astrid, with a faint grin, because these were references she could easily make, those had been some of Michael's favourites. "Or Ben Hur. Maybe we'll even get stuck in Ancient Rome and have no choice. It happened when we visited Greece once for a trip."

Which suddenly felt like ages ago, in more than just the literal sense. Mae hadn't even been here yet, she didn't think, and it was hard for her to even imagine a Fandom without a Mae anymore, they were so inexorably tied together in her mind now.

"This island went to Ancient Rome?" Mae threw her arms in the air. "And I missed it???"

She'd be such a great gladiator! She'd die immediately, but with so much panache!

"Ancient Greece," Astrid corrected, "meaning we still have a chance for Ancient Rome. You could be a gladiator, Tahani and Alexis can have thrilling chariot races where they both have definitely equipped their chariots with illegal spikes on the wheels. I could be..." It was easier picturing what others would do. "...a sculptor, I guess."

"You could host one of those salon things. They did those in Rome, right?"

Mae didn't know a lot about ancient cultures, no.

"Salons were more eighteenth century," Astrid smiled faintly, "and the Enlightenment and much more French. Powdered wigs and things like that. But there's the Forum, where all the philosophers would get together and talk about how wrong the others were. I'd probably just be there to listen."

"I think you underestimate how much some people just love to hear the sound of their own voice," said Astrid, who had been created solely to be an earpiece.
