Did Anakin care that it was a break week from workshops? He did not.

Did he care about the incessant sounds from the loon following him around? Slightly more, yeah, but glaring at the bird did nothing.

"This week we celebrate the national days of two countries on this continent," Anakin began grandly as everyone gathered in the park. "With parades and explosions, though I've been told not at the same time."

He couldn't help but sounding a little disappointed about that revelation. "So today you will work together in teams to make thematically appropriate--" as determined by a guy not even from this planet who married a girl from a small New England town that celebrated many, many things that weren't actually holidays, "--parade floats and matching costumes. You have all day and many, many craft supplies!"

Because really, what else was going on?

"Listen for your names!"

Were there slightly more Timbits, poutine, and maple cookies available than were generally available? Well, yes. But there was also a looooot of grilled meats (and, inexplicably, potato salad with raisins. Who invited them?) on offer today. Huzzah for barbecue food!

Since it was Canada Day, Wayne was engaging in the newest Wayne's-Away-At-Boarding-School tradition, which was Skyping with Katy on holidays so that they could still sort of share the day together without him having to miss anything here or dealing with any portals. Which meant him scanning his phone around the park and explaining to her that this was where they met every Wednesday for the most 10-ply, spare parts tom fuckery you could imagine.

"I don't know," Katy was saying, shaking her head at all the Canada-ness of the food offerings, "if I'm offended or kind of touched."

"Both, Katy," said Wayne. "The answer's fuckin' both."

"...is that a loon?"

"Can confirm."

"You know, it's probably not too late for you to hitch a portal and get up here in time for fireworks."

To that, Wayne could only give a disconsolate grumble, then waited to see if he'd even be called up to participate this week.

"Hi Katy!" Shuri yelled from behind Wayne's shoulder. "Happy Canada Day!"

It was on her reminder calendar.

Because she was just good like that.

"Hi, Shuri!" Katy beamed back at her with a little wave. "Happy Canada Day! You're joining us for fireworks later, right?"

It was said very much in a pointed tone that suggested she'd totally kick Wayne's butt if he didn't share fireworks with her later, which was met with a grumble from Wayne because who did she think he was, that he wouldn't already plan to have Shuri watch the fireworks with him?

True, they weren't nearly the same over the phone, but if you squinted (which he did), it was almost like actually being there for 'em.

Amaya may have been a bit disappointed to not hear her name being called for what was essentially a building challenge, but she supposed it would help even the playing field a little if she weren't participating.

Besides, that meant meat-on-a-stick time! And any time that was meat-on-a-stick time was a very good time indeed!

Freya was a little bit surprised to have not heard her name called, but perhaps it was for the better, because she knew absolutely nothing about anything that the floats were supposed to represent, and now she could enjoy them as a spectator, though she was going to wind up with far more questions at the end of this than answers, more than likely.

But discovering Timbits was going to be a problem.

Silver had no idea why he was told to participate in this, but it wasn't like he had anything better to do. And, hey, food he didn't cook! He was all about that.

Yeah, just the smell of all those grilled meats was making Liam feel vaguely nauseous, so he was gonna give those a wide berth and stick to the poutine.

And... whatever those dessert bars with the custard were.

Alluka had also discovered the dessert bars.

Now she had a plate piled high with them and nothing else.

"Don't tell my sister," she said, grinning up at Liam.

“Your secret’s safe with me,” he winked back at her. “... Who’s your sister?” he checked. “Just so I don’t let it slip by accident.”

She giggled.

"Kathy," she said and then, realizing that might not actually help, added, "She owns Dite's."

"Ah!" Liam nodded. "Right. I met her at the picnic at the start of the summer." He gave Alluka's plate a considering look. "Not a fan of sweets, is she?"

"She's okay with sweets in moderation," Alluka said, not wanting him to get the wrong idea. "Even if she is a bit of a bear for vegetables."

Which.

Er.

Given what Alluka ate when Kathy wasn't around was... totally warranted?

The amount of desserts Alluka currently had in her possession was certainly not moderate, that's for sure.

"Nothing wrong with vegetables," Liam said. "I've been known to eat one or two from time to time myself."

The saddest, silliest part of it all was that Alluka was the moderate one in her blood family when it came to sweets.

Her elder brother Killua literally spent millions on them.

It was a bit of a problem.

"I don't mind veggies," she admitted. "But if I get a choice, it's always going to be sweets first!"

"So sweets for the main course, and then maybe veggies... if there's any room left?" Liam asked.

"Weeeeeell," she said, "I hadn't planned on veggies today.........."

Clearly!

And, okay, despite appearances, Alluka was an adult and one Liam didn't know too well at that, her diet really wasn't his business, and yet-

"Oh, I don't know. I think all plans should have a little room for flexibility in them," he mused.
