Try Not to Die!!, Monday, May 11, 2020

Anakin looked a little gleeful as he stood outside the Portalocity office this morning, standing in front of a world map. "Good morning, everyone," he said. "Today we are going to Malaysia because that's where the dart I threw at the map landed."

In case you were under any illusions that Anakin prepped for a long time on this class or something.

"For those of you not familiar with this class, you will go through the portal and then encounter two different challenges to perform, in addition to showing basic navigational skills and ability to think quickly on your feet in an unfamiliar location." He smiled. "Try not to get run over or get food poisoning, but just in case you do, please sign these extensive liability waivers. The school board insisted."

After those were all filled out to his standard, he clapped his hands. "First to the final meeting place wins!"

Alexis was refusing to take off her heels. Otherwise she was doing pretty well at managing the stairs.

And by the third time up her legs were starting to burn? Also probably because of the heels.

Look it was her first class and she'd been trying to make a good impression.

Jules got off to a pretty good start, honestly, but somewhere around the second trip down the stairs, her bad leg started to ache and from there, she was losing more and more ground to her classmates as she had to force herself to slow down.

Duke headed for the temple. The stairs weren't an issue for him, but the other people were, as he kept pausing to chat. . . .

Look, he was Buddhist. This wasn't an opportunity he had every day! It took ages to sail to Malaysia!

Beaker had chosen to balance flags, which would have been a lot easier for people not built like Muppets. The flags were easily twice his size. This....would take a while.

Stairs were boring and easy so Iris headed for the Esplanade because that sounded like way, way more fun.

This was pretty easy too but she kept laughing and messing herself up and, since she could, she also got a few of the locals to take pictures of her while doing it so she could send them to Tseng.

Winning was nice and all but knowing you were making your husband smile?

Priceless!

Alara didn’t have any issues carrying the Joss Sticks but running up and down the stairs proved to be difficult and it took her quite a bit longer than normal to navigate the stairs, especially since she ended up stumbling a few times.

Grog was kind of annoyed that they wouldn't let him just take all the little sticks at once, but steps were so not a problem with his long legs, and now he smelled nice too!

Even keeping to normal human speeds, Julius made excellent time running up and down the stairs of the temple. He was definitely feeling the strain by the fourth stick - stupid not keeping in shape once official training ended - but he was pretty sure he could make it and be one of the first people out.

Disaster - at least for his score - struck on his way up with the fifth joss stick. There was an old woman struggling to climb the stairs on her own and Julius couldn't help but pause to ask her if she needed help. Not that she spoke English. But she did take his proffered arm and he escorted her up the verrrry long stairs. And then, well, he couldn't just leave her to get down by herself, could he?

Not really. So he waited politely for her to finish burning her joss stick and murmuring her prayers and then helped her all the way down again.

Welp. So much for that lead.

Nell made it up and down the temple stairs the first four times pretty easily, but she was definitely flagging by the fifth time. Still going back was downhill!

This, too, had been going well- she was a naturalist, and spices had all been parts of plants, once.

And then Camden sneezed.

And Jules started all over again with a sigh.

Duke managed . . . slightly less chatting at this stop. Mostly asking about the different spices and their potential culinary uses.

Hey, it wasn't like he was anxious to beat out the kids anyway. He was just here for the adventure.

Apparently "meep meee MEEP meep meep!" wasn't the most helpful directions Beaker's cabbie had ever received because it took him a while to find the spice garden.

So far Beaker hadn't blown a single thing up! He was so proud of himself, even if he was a decidedly middling tea-brewer.

Alexis just outright sucked at this one, really.

On the third time of having to start over there may have been a "Well I'm sorry, this is nothing like making your own perfume!"

The taxi driver had sworn he knew a shortcut that would get her there faster and, hey, why not, right?

Yeah, no. Turned out construction abounded on his 'shortcut' so it took what felt like forever to get there.

Luckily, tea and spices were something she could breeze through in her sleep, so Iris finished this in record time. It didn't make up for all the time she'd lost thanks to the 'shortcut' but, hey, whatever?

She also picked up some new teas because yes, good.

Alara knew she hadn’t done very well with the first challenge, so she was hoping that this one would go a lot better and she was surprised that she had an easier time with recognising the different spices and was able to do the challenge more quickly.

With his sense of smell, figuring out what spices went into the blend was nothing. But he'd spent so much time with the old woman back at the table that most of the others had left before he'd even arrived.

Still, clue in hand and guru thanked, Julius hurried on.

Grog thought he had a good sense of smell, but everything just smelled like leaves, and he wasn't fast enough to sneak any of the spices into his mouth. The nice lady either felt bad for him, or just wanted him out of the place, but he finally got the right blend in the end.

Nell was actually very good at this, but she was so fascinated by the spices and blends that she got distracted and forgot that she was supposed to be moving on to the next part!

Well, at least this she managed to do correctly on the very first try? And get the dyed-yellow one, too! Maybe that'd make up for some of the ground lost on the earlier tasks?

... Made up for all of it, apparently, as she caught sight of Anakin. So sure, her hair was full of that spice blend and she was visibly limping, but she was also first. Hah!
