Creative Writing; Monday, First Period [05/11].

Since Shunsui's class was a small one, he had absolutely no problem arranging the classroom where they'd be meeting to be a little more cozy and comfortable by having the standard desks removed and replaced with kotatsu, which seemed a bit out of place for a summer class, but he was using them more for their aesthetic and inpirational appeal than for their actual functional uses. They were placed in a circle all facing each other, and Shunsui settled himself down at one of them, gracefully lowering himself despite the two very loaded drink carriers in each of his hands. They were to-go cups from the Perk, and not a drop of them spilled as he sat, and then he started passing them around, one to his left, one to his right.

"Welcome, welcome, my little scribbling duckilngs ♥!" he greeted them brightly, pleased to see new faces as well as familiar ones. "Don't be shy, now, come have a seat, claim your kotatsu ♥! And please help yourself to a lovely beverage; some are cocoa, some are coffee, choose whichever you prefer, because we are here to be writers, and writers should have something to drink while they're writing, but I believe the school would frown upon us having sake ♥! So, help yourself, ducklings, and we'll get started ♥.

"I am Shunsui Kyōraku, and I will be your guide through the process of taking our furtive imaginations and wrangling them down with words to delight and entertain ♥! Some of you may be may be wondering what my qualifications might be...I just so happen to be the author of two very well-known," --well-known for their terribleness, anyway-- "books--a great and epic novel and and a bestselling autobiography and book of poetry ♥! I believe that life is poetry in motion and that there is a story in everything and there are few journeys as great as the one that brings us through the doorway of the written word ♥. We will cover a different element of writing every week, and then pursue a writing activity based on that theme ♥. This includes today, so I hope you all brought something to write with, but, if not, I have brought along some notebooks and pens to use ♥."

And, yes, he definitely suspected that at least one of them to help herself to those even if she was already fully prepared.

"Today's lesson will involve not only a chance to get to know each other, but it will also teach us one of the key elements in effective writing ♥. Perhaps some of you have heard of the game Two Truths and a Lie ♥? Typically, this is an ice-breaking exercise in which a person introduces themselves with three little tidbits of information, two of which are true, and one of which is a lie, and the others in the group then try to guess which one is the falsehood ♥. This is an excellent tool for fiction: all fiction, after all, is improved when it's inspired by truth; it is most effective if it's grounded in some sort of reality, but, since we are creators, a little lying, a little elaboration on the truth or a bit of creativity, is always a nice touch ♥. In a sense, a good story is made up of 'two truths and a lie' ♥.

""So that is what we will do today, only, instead of just saying two truths and a lie about yourself, I would like you little goslings to compose it as a story ♥. For example, here would be mine ♥."

Was Shunsui incredibly pleased to find that his example from the last time he taught this class still existed? It was incredibly crumpled, a little bit torn, stained with splashes of sake and perhaps something else best not known, but it was still...mostly legible, and he could just fill in the gaps where they weren't. He cleared his throat a little, and read, his voice deep but dancing with amusement:

""It was spring, when the trees were bright with the blooming sakura, leaving their intoxicating scent lingering in the faint breeze. Shunsui Kyōraku, a formidable man looming over the hedges of the garden, looked over the members of his division. He was their captain, their leader, the strong and determined Eighth Division of the Soul Society, and he was debriefing them on a job well done. He had worked with many of them for years; even his lieutenant, Nanao Ise, had virtually grown up in their ranks. When Shunsui had finished speaking, a voice piped up from the gathered soldiers.

'What now, Captain?'

'Break out the booze!' chimed another excited voice.

But to that, Shunsui only chuckled, shaking his head. 'Ah, no," he said. 'I do not drink.'"
"

"So, what do you think, ducklings ♥? Which parts of my story do you think are truths and what do you suppose might be the lie? I know a couple of you have an advantage over the others because you know me or you've had my class before, so let's let the newer faces get the first stab at it. And then I'll let you get to work on your own ♥. Enjoy your coffee, your cocoa, and take some time to compose a little story about yourself that involves two truths and lie ♥. Feel free to chat with each other as you work and, toward the end of the class, we'll then share our stories ♥. But remember, your classmates have to guess which is true and which is false, so don't reveal too much as you talk ♥. And if anyone needs a notebook, pen, or just some help, please let me know ♥."
