Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I mean," said Summer, with an absolutely shameless grin, "my whole class last semester was about weird shit the universe might throw at you. I was honestly just thinking of going through my syllabus, and judge the possibility of their survival here based on how far we were able to get before they just slowly backed away."

And she'd have considered it a tragic failure if they managed to get through the whole thing.

"And I'm more likely to point out a couple of things you missed," Kathy said, sharing that grin. "I can see where that's a disappointment."

"I guess I'll just have to stick with traumatizing students, ugh!" said Summer, throwing up her hands and rolling her eyes to match the exaggerated despair to go along with the sentiment. "But there's always next time. And maybe you can even give me some ideas for the next time I teach a class like that..."

Since this semester, she'd be teaching....

...ugh. She didn't know if she was ready to even talk about that tragedy yet. And, still...

"You're teaching about, like, heroes and stuff, right?"

"The Heroic Journey," Kathy agreed. "Not, like, superheroes or whatever."

It was an important distinction for...reasons.

"Mostly because I'm trying to get into Yale, so a summer of teaching will look good on my application. What about you?"

And, yeah, yeah, yeah, Summer knew that was going to be the likely follow-up question, but, hey! She didn't really know Kathy yet; she was honestly kind of hoping for a complete nerd moment or something where she'd just go on and on and on about whatever her class was about.

No such luck! But, she was an expert deflector, and there was still a good opportunity to avoid the inevitable there.

"Ooooooh," she gushed, "Yale! Nice! What are you planning on going into?"

Her experience with Paris told her that anyone trying to get into those Ivy Leagues just loved to talk about it ad nauseum...

Unluckily for Summer, Kathy had been trying to drastically curtail her tendency to word-wall at people!

"I'm hoping to get into both their Urban Studies program and also their Ethics, Politics, and Economics program. The city I live in now got pretty devastated a few years back and even before that, it was deliberately twisted and corrupted all to hell." Literally. "They're trying to rebuild now and I wanna help, you know? So Urban Planning to learn what I'm doing, and then Ethics, Politics, and Economics to make sure that it's done right."

But it had effectively swung the attention away from her lame ass class! So it was still totally a success!

"That's so cool," Summer said, and she meant it, grinning genuinely even without the effective distraction. "Like, all I have is a summer semester at a community college business school, but, I mean, the retail, restaurant, and bar business is, like, so something you can get a much better education in the real world, but something like that's legit, and I wouldn't want to mess that up, either.

"So, what's the city?" she then asked, to keep this nice Conversation That Wasn't Her Stupid Class ball rolling along. "I mean, I understand that there's a chance I've never even heard of it, but I've been around the multiverse a bit, I might have at least heard of a version of it."

"Limbo City?" Kathy said, though she didn't think it was likely. "It's in Connecticut, pretty close to the New York border."

And much closer to Yale than to NYU, which Kathy kept saying, like anybody went to Yale because it was conveniently located.

"And you're right about the experience in the real world," she added. "I thought about maybe going to school for business since I own Dite's, but...I was in high school when I took it over. What's school going to teach me there?"

Especially for running a business on this island?

"Yeah, nope," Summer admitted, "never came across one of those, but I'll have to keep an eye out for it. And honestly? I only even took those classes because my mom got her stethescope all in a knot over me potentially just throwing my life away wanting to open a jello shop in space, like she has any room to talk about dumb mistakes when she was young!"

Like Summer! Summer was the dumb mistake.

"A jello shop in space?" Kathy asked.

At least she sounded curious and not judgey!
