Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Tony just laughed and shook his head. "Well, in a way? Usually I teach politics or teamwork."

Or science. You know, the thing he had actual degrees in.

'Teamwork' also sounded like a fake subject, Tony. "Well, the gods know more people could do with a sound education on politics, although I've just left a posting in the field myself." And she'd noticed she was drinking much less now!

Yeah, Tony's look was one of absolute commiseration. Because politics were a terrible thing that made you drink heavily lest you notice the dumpster fire in your front yard. "Where was your posting?"

Because, hey, maybe she was from the past.

Hey, Yennefer had been doing a great job of ignoring the dumpster fire!
Right up until an arrow punched through the wall of her carriage.

"Aedirn," she said. "I was an advisor to the king. Not that he listened to me. I'd say good luck without me, but Aretuza will just send someone else, of course."

"I'm sorry, I've never heard of an Aedirn." Or Aretuza for that matter. "But that can also be common here."

Did that help? It totally made it less weird, right?

"I hadn't heard of 'Maryland' before I accepted this position, either," Yennefer admitted. "I was a bit confused about some of the details, I must admit. I thought dimensional travel was only a hypothetical. Given the opportunity to try it out for myself I could hardly refuse, could I?" Although she hadn't been able to figure out how Portalocity did it on the trip to the island. Further research was clearly called for.

Just don't get into a lawsuit with them. Tony had been there, done that.

Tony brightened right up, though. "It's generally a lot of theoretical physics, but the math works for the most part. Also, magic."

He said 'magic' with a sigh.

"You don't like magic?" Because you're talking to a sorceress, Tony.

Look, he couldn't help himself here!

"Not really my thing," Tony admitted.

Those who were incapable of harnessing chaos were so often dismissive of its power. She was only judging you a lot, Tony.

"Your loss."

HE LITERALLY KNEW THE SORCERER SUPREME. Also, magic was dumb.

"One I will gladly accept," Tony replied. "But it's good that you'll be able to handle the strangeness here."

There was no such thing as a Sorcerer Supreme, Tony. Unless it was what that asshole Stregobor that Tissaia loved to bitch about was calling himself these days. She wouldn't put it past him.

"Are some people unable to handle a bit of strangeness?" She was judging them as well. She judged a lot of people. It was one of her favorite things.

Yeah, he was picking up on that. But hey, he went to boarding school too. It wasn't too foreign.

"Well, yeah. Sometimes we wake up different people or with kids from some weird alternate reality. Or the wrong gender."

"Interdimensional portals lead to interdimensional instability?" Yennefer tried out. It seemed a likely hypothesis. "That's slightly unfortunate."

Tony wobbled his head back and forth like that was a pretty succinct response to it all.

"You learn to childproof your place--" What would that even mean for her? "--and spare clothing for when you're not you. It's... doable. And I am here if you have questions."

Maybe it would give her some insight on how to restore her fertility! Always a bright side.

"I will be sure to look you up...Tony." Aaaand now she was flirting.

And he was Tony Stark, so he smiled back as being vaguely flirtatious part of his base state of being. "I have a phone for you too. Which I'm guessing you're not accustomed to."

They were going to get along great! Yennefer scrutinized the 'phone' curiously. "No, I can't say I'm familiar with this type of device."

"May I?" Tony asked, asking permission before doing something so uncouth as to invade her space as he held out his hands for the phone again.

"Of course," Yennefer said, and handed the device back to him.

Don't think she hadn't noticed it had your surname branded on it, Tony.

It was how he knew it wouldn't crap out on anyone! When you field test in space, you know it's safe.

He tapped the screen, letting her watch the process. "You can access the internet, which is... like a library where anyone has input. Take that as you will." Also porn. Which she'd probably figure out on her own. "Or make calls to talk to people. I put myself in there in case you have questions, but you can easily add other people here."

"So it's like a xenovox," Yennefer said. "...with a library inside of it." Really, they just let anyone add stuff? That seemed dangerous. "Interesting."

"There you go!" Tony said, offering it back to her to try. "Try not to get into fights on the internet. It never works and people are stupid no matter what."

The amount of times he had to drag Steve away from fights on Facebook...

"...I'll keep that in mind," Yennefer said. "Thank you. This seems very useful."

Well, Steve was old, what did you expect?

And anti-vaxxers were awful. But still. Such an old man.

"Hey, we've all been new here. Best to help people out, you know?"
