Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Roommates?" Julius didn't mean to sound spoiled, he really didn't. But he hadn't shared a room with anyone since his clutch had left the hatchery and before that--

Well, being the runt of a draconic litter wasn't a great experience even for dragons who were better at dragoning than Julius was.

Which was all of them, really.

"At least this seems to solve the matter of procuring room and board while we're here," Freya noted, with a small, somewhat apologetic smile when she saw the list and heard her apparent new roommate's reaction to the situation.

"If it's any consolation," she then offered, "I don't suspect I'll be staying for long, if it can at all be helped."

She had much more important business to attend to than school, thank you.

[[ sorry this is hitting so late! Yesterday done killed my brain but good ]]

"Oh!" Julius said, suddenly feeling like a heel. "No! I didn't mean - I'm sure you're a perfectly good roommate," he said quickly.

Way to make a girl feel unwelcome in her own room, Julius.

"I just - the last time I shared a room, it was with some of my siblings and it...didn't go well. I'm sure you'll be just fine. An improvement really!"

She wasn't actively going to try to attack him in the night, probably.

It was a shame that Freya kept her smiles so small (partly out of stoicism, partly out of simple anatomy), because perhaps the one on her face would have settled his concerns slightly.

"The last time I shared a room," she said, trying to keep it light despite the ache it produced in her chest, "it was hardly with siblings."

And it had gone...very well.

Until...

She shook her head slightly, to pull herself back into the present.

"I'm sure we'll get on fine, Julius," she said. "I don't imagine I'd even use a room much except to store my things and sleep, and, since I've shown up without anything but the clothes and the weapon on my back..."

"You're one up on me then," Julius said with a wry smile. "I don't even have a weapon."

"I never leave home without it," said Freya, and thank the gods for that now! She'd mostly meant it as a joke, though it was true, and tilted her head curiously at Julius. "Do you usually have one?"

Claws. Fangs. Dragon fire. Magic.

Not that he had really used any of those to begin with. Didn't mean he didn't feel their lack keenly.

"Uhh, I got trained in weapons back home," he said. "Sword mostly. I was never that good, though. My brother Justin, he's the swordsman of the cl--group."

Humans didn't generally refer to their siblings as 'clutches.'

Freya nodded slightly, finding encouragement in the fact that her new roommate at least had some training, as if this could be something to make their cohabitation easier, a common ground, however small, guessing by the reluctance in his voice.

And, you know, the outright admittance.

"I work with spears and javellins and lances, myself," she offered, "but perhaps we can work together on some training. It will be important to keep my skills honed, even while I'm here."

The narrative could see no way that this could go horribly awry at all!

"Err..." One of the bright spots of ending training was that it meant that Julius never had to pick up a weapon again. But this was his roommate and he'd already sort of insulted her with his reluctance to have a roommate in the first place and it was unlikely that she'd be as bad to spar against as any of his siblings, sooo... "I mean, if you want to?" he said. "I'm not sure how much help I'll be since you're more skilled than I am, but if you don't mind that?"

Oh, Julius.

"Perhaps I can help you, then," Freya offered, gesturing as if it was a physical thing to be given. "After all, experience is best when shared. That way, maybe when you return home, you might surprise your brother with what you've learned."

Oh, Freya.

"Unless you're actually more talented than you let on, and arent' simply being modest. I guess we'll find out on the training grounds."

Where...ever that might be. As soon as this picnic was over, Freya was going to need to do some serious exploration

Whereas Julius was going to go right to bed. Sorry about not letting you pick your preferred bed, Freya.

"Oh no, I promise, not being modest," Julius assured her. "Just generally not very good. I'm fast, not strong."

Well, for a dragon. On a human scale, that was entirely different.

"A wily warrior can outmatch a powerful one easily," Freya noted, "if they know how to use that speed to their advantage. I'd consider being fleet of foot far more of an advantage for me than my strength, though there's no denying that strength does play a part."

And all this talk of training was making her tail twitch a little with an eagerness to get to it. Even if there wasn't a proper training ground on the island, she could easily get a good workout leaping the buildings.

Fleet of foot and fleet of wing, not that Julius could point that out. "It took about seven years of dodging away from my brother's most powerful swings to get him to admit that," Julius said, surprising himself with a chuckle. "Though he'd point out that the best thing to do would be to let the fast fighter tire himself out and then lay into them once they were too tired to dodge."

Ask him how he knew.

Freya's tail flicked a little happily, pleased to have gotten chuckle out of her roommate and feeling a little more confidence in the arrangement. "That's a fine strategy," she allowed, "if the fast fighter doesn't know what he's doing. I'm sure I could teach you a few things that might cause your brother to reconsider his strategy...and hopefully faster than in seven years!"

Justin wasn't the brightest flame in the clutch. But he was pretty good with tactics and probably the least homicidal of all of Julius's siblings.

"It would be worth it just to see his face," Julius said. "Regardless of whether he changed his mind or not!"
