Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

“And this is only my third one,” Duke said. “How’s it going, Sheriff? New guy arrest anyone else yet?”

"Not in the few minutes since Octavia asked me ~~in the other post~~," Liam informed him dryly. "So I'd say that's a success."

"Glad to hear it. The next guy might not handle it as well."

Octavia hadn't even stabbed him!

"That's probably true yet also not likely to be much of a deterrent as far as Williams is concerned," Liam admitted. Considering part of Danny's reason for hauling Duke in had been that he'd been uncooperative.

Duke would happily argue that his response had been totally reasonable.

"Yeah. Charming guy you hired."

Reasonable, yes. More ammunition in Danny’s supposedly righteous crusade? Also yes.

“I didn’t so much hire him as his paperwork showed up at the station.”

Duke let out a startled, delighted laugh. "No shit. That happens to you cops too, huh?"

“You say ‘you cops’ like I didn’t show up here and get press-ganged into the job,” Liam said with a snort.

". . . That really only supports what I'm saying," Duke said. "You all get roped into these jobs, too. It's not like I showed up expecting to teach high school."

"True," Liam conceded. "But Williams at least is an actual cop."

Liam was just a guy who got handed a title and rolled with it because that was just... how his life was.

"You're not actually a cop?" Duke shook his head. "Man, no wonder I like you."

“Thanks, I think?” Liam laughed. “Yeah, my job before this was- kind of a mix between bodyguard and personal assistant? I guess the island or... whatever, decided that must be close enough.”

"Hey, man, if it means you don't have all the weird hang ups most cops do, I'm all for it."

“Weird hang ups like what?” Liam asked, curious now.

"You know, like. . . ." Laws. He meant like enforcing laws. "Everybody having to do things the same way."

Liam and laws didn’t always get along, honestly.

“As long as whatever things you’re doing aren’t meant to harm anyone on this island,” he said slowly. And, you know, ideally anyone off it except for extenuating circumstances, but realistically he was mostly concerned with Fandom being safe.

"I never want to hurt anyone," Duke said, entirely honestly. "So long as they don't hurt me first."

"Good," Liam nodded. "I didn't have you pegged for being into that kind of trouble," because he may not know the details of your life of crime, Duke, but he could absolutely spot that you were some sort of trouble (pun not intended), "but it's good to hear."

Duke was many different sorts of trouble, to be sure. Most of them even by choice.

“And I didn’t peg you for a fool,” Duke said. “Glad we’re both right.”
