Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Octavia had always been much better at dealing with other people whenever there was free food involved.

"Of course," she said, with a small nod, knowing it was about as unnecessary as the question had been. There was comfort in rituals. "Sorry about Wednesday."

Shunsui's smile softened a little at that.

"Hardly anything to apologize for, Octavia-chan ♥," he told her, especially since he hadn't really been expecting one, and, with the sake expertly poured into the two cups perfectly balanced in his hand, he offered them out to her, so that she may choose; one was noticeably more full than the other, "though you did miss some truly astonishing feats in hamburger-related architecture ♥."

"Pyramids again?" Octavia asked, faintly amused, as she reached for the cup that had less sake in it. "Or were there other shapes, this time?"

"I believe he was attempting a few triumphal arches for a while," Shusui mused idly, never not pleased to find himself with the heavier cup, "and then just stuck with obelisks when those didn't go over so well. Not nearly as impressive ♥."

"Still sounds better than my Wednesday," Octavia replied, lifting her cup vaguely as if in a toast to Apu's architectural endeavors.

Then she sighed. "Duke got arrested."

Well, that was a good way to make Shunsui (who really should be bothered to listen to radio every so often) raise his eyebrows as well as his cup. "Did he, now?" he asked, and sipped, in part to help him hold back any particular comments he may have thought to make about not minding being arrested at all considering the one detective he thought this island had (again, it really would behoove him to at least maybe think about turning on a radio one of these days). "That certainly sounds more exciting..."

No, he did not make it sound like a good thing.

"And what was it that your snogon did to earn himself that particular excitement?"

"Nothing, as usual."

Okay, that part was a little unfair, seeing as Duke was a criminal. But, Octavia's own recent run-in with the law may have colored her perception some.

"But new guy thought he'd kidnapped his roommate. And that that's why she is the way she is."

"...new guy?" asked Shunsui, with a blink and a tilt of his head, because who needed radio when they had an Octavia-chan that could catch them up on things way after the fact? "And Duke-san's roommate is Larceny-chan, isn't it? And if kidnapping her is what caused her to be so delightful and precious, then I can hardly see why that would be a criminal offense ♥."

"She was worse when we found her," Octavia replied mildly. "Duke's helped her. And for that, he got thrown in jail for a night."

Her voice stayed just as mild, it just got quieter.

"And I didn't know where he was."

Shunsui's expression softened a little, his smile gone apologetic as if to apologize for the universe, having been on the receiving end of how Octavia felt about Not Knowing What Was Going On With People once before. And this wasn't even just the guy she go ther grocery store sake from they were talking about, either.

"At least," he offered, soft as his expression, though he knew it probably wouldn't make much difference, "he wasn't very far, and it wasn't for very long."

"I guess," Octavia replied, her own tone softening a little.

She took a little sip from her cup.

"Still hated it, though. I had to have called him at least twenty times. Which means I heard the bit on his voicemail about twenty times, too, and you know what he says on it?"

The question was rhetorical.

"Buddha says 'All good things come to those who wait.'" She snorted.

Forgive him, Octavia-chan. Shunsui couldn't not laugh at that.

"I think this Buddha fellow might be onto something ♥," he said, leaning in a little with a grin that wasn't quite yet a wink, wasn't quite yet a nudge, but the spirit of both practically radiated off of him.

"And?" he then prompted. "Did good things come to she who waited?"

Octavia rolled her eyes, but it was good-natured. "Well, eventually the radio told me he'd been arrested," she drawled, "so I went to the station and somehow did not beat up the new guy."

She'd lunged over his desk to grab his shirt, though, so there was that.

"So I don't know how good that is." But, she shrugged one shoulder. "Duke and I didn't leave the bed much on Thursday, though."

"In my book," Shunsui informed her warmly, the wink impossible to hold back now, "that falls under a very, very good thing, Octavia-chan ♥."

"Not surprised," Octavia replied dryly, but much like the eyeroll before, it sounded a little fond around the edges, if you knew how to listen. And since Shunsui had spent a good chunk of the past year paying close attention to her once a week, he probably did know how, yes.

"It was nice," she admitted, after a little pause. "Still would've preferred it without the police."

He did, yes, and he was particularly pleased to hear her actually admit to it, even with the little pause.

"I'm sure most things are greatly improved without police involvement," Shunsui agreed, before passing a less-than-subtle glance toward the only officer on the island he ever cared to pay any attention to. "In an official capacity, anyway ♥."

And that was a good thought to end a cup of sake on!
