How To Be Civilized, Friday, Period 3

"So," Seivarden said. "I see that you survived that party you had last night. Just to be clear, even without aphrodisiacs in the air it's not civilized to have a party with kissing games without wearing gloves."

She gave Tisarwat a look.

"But today we're going to talk about something else, although obviously I do expect you to wear acceptable gloves as usual, of course."

Here she gave Mae a look.

"Now, politeness is usually a good thing, but sometimes you need to make sure someone understands you disapprove of them. This should of course be done in a civilized way. So today's exercise will be to first think of a situation where you would need to express your disapproval, and then come up with an insult, in words or actions, that's subtle enough to be proper, while clear enough not to be mistaken for a compliment."

"A simple example would be when your poor cousins yet again invite themselves for tea. You could serve them using an inferior tea set, while talking of the expensive one someone just gave you. No one is going to miss the point, of course."

"So please, go ahead."

Wow. Just -- Wow.

Mae was going to sit here, quietly, looking attentive, leaning her head on a hand clad in a clean, nicely tailored, comfortable glove.

That had no palm.

Look at that. She'd come prepared for today's lesson without even trying to!

Seivarden show Mae looks during the lecture, then approached her afterwards.

"Mae. Those kinds of gloves are for adults."

"I like them," Mae said. "They're funky!"

"You can't wear them in class," Seivarden said firmly. "Even the dirty socks are better."

"Why?" Mae asked.

"You're exposing your palms to strangers," Seivarden said. "It's like..."

She tried to think of a good explanation.

"...wearing sexy underwear in public."

Mae looked down at her hands, then back up at Seivarden. "So you're saying I look sexy?"

Mae.

"No."

Seivarden sighed.

"I'm saying you're wearing gloves that look like you're trying to get that kind of attention. If you are, it's not appropriate in class."

"Yeah, that doesn't make any sense," Mae said. "They're hands."

"Why doesn't it make any sense?" Seivarden asked.

"Because they're hands!"

Mae wasn't the best explainer of things.

"Everyone has them! Are you offended by ankles, too? Or noses?"

"Everyone has genitals too, it doesn't mean you show them in public," Seivarden pointed out.

"That's not even a little bit the same thing," Mae said. "But it's also kind of a dumb rule."

"Why?"

"Because. Skin is skin. And people should get to do whatever they want with theirs."

"They do get to do whatever they want with it," Seivarden replied. "It's just a question of whether it's proper or not."

With Seivarden and with each other.

"I mean, like, isn't it more civilized to either just suck it up or to just tell your cousins to stop mooching??????????????" Nina said, her hands neatly in her pink, frilly gloves.

She was not particularly hungover.

"Some people can pull off telling them to stop," Seivarden said. "That requires a bit of... talent though, so stick with the insults."

If she's here.

She was there!

And not handling her hangover very well, but that was hardly anything new. Which meant she probably wasn't doing as good of a job as she usually would have hiding her smirk over any particular chastisements over her unruly behavior.

Because she had been wearing gloves, thank you! It wasn't her fault everyone else here was just so uncivilized!

Lana had been particularly pleased with the party.

So now she was giving Tisarwat a look and offering her (gloved) hand. "Hangover cure?" she murmured.

"Yes, please," Tisarwat whispered back, with a faint laugh and a wry grin. "Quickly, too, before Seivarden notices. I'm sure she's planning to insist that any of my suffering is clearly just Amaat's will as punishment for my misguided uncivilized debauchery."

No, she didn't think Seivarden would be quite that dramatic with it, but she did know Seivarden would be dealing with Mae before dealing with her, so it probably wasn't too far off.

There would definitely be no 'kiddo's today.

Lana grinned and sent some Force healing Tisarwat's way. "I appreciated the uncivilized debauchery, so thank you."

Tisarwat let out a sigh of relief once that healing chased away her twisting stomach, made her head stop pounding, the spot where her implant had been stop screaming. Probably much deeper and showing far more appreciation than it usually might have today, but it couldn't be helped.

"Oh," she said in a breath, "that's much better. Thank you. And," her grateful smile went a little crooked as it turned into a grin, "I'm glad to hear that you were enjoying the evening as much as you looked like you were."

After-party gossip was, after all, a very important part of any event.

Sith did not blush, damn it!

"It was a very good evening, thank you." Okay, maybe she was grinning just a bit.

"Really?" Seivarden said, raising an eyebrow. "A party like that in a week like this?"

She would totally have done it herself, of course.

In other words, Seivarden was just jealous she hadn't thought of something similar first.

And Tisarwat might have been tempted to point out that a week like this was the perfect time for a party like that, if it weren't for the fact that she hadn't actually thought there was anything different about the week, besides her somehow managing to find her social stride again.

"It was an incredible success, you know," she said.

She could have acted like she was ashamed or sorry or something like that. She could be an excellent actress when she wanted to be. But she also didn't feel like she needed to be, in this case.

Seivarden sighed. "Of course it was."

Tisarwat's head tilted; she'd have expected more of a lecture or a reprimand after that. Maybe Mae had just worn her down?

Which just reminded Tisarwat to absolutely not mention the fact that Mae was actually one of the few people to actually wear gloves last night. Proper ones, too, unlike Prompto's...

"It's not like it even means anything to anyone here," she pointed out. "And for those who did understand, it just made things...." She made a small gesture "...more interesting."

Well, for her, anyway. It made things more interesting for her. There was a reason why she was going to have a hard time looking Nina in the eye today.

"Think of it like annexation," she added. "Sometimes, making small allowances for things in the beginning makes it easier for new planets to become civilized in the long run."

"You know a lot about annexations?" Seivarden asked, a little surprised by - and possibly annoyed with - the last comment.

She's giving you disapproving looks.
