If the amount of food that Walter usually grabbed was large, today's was prodigious. He sat down, lit a cigarette (ahh, sweet nicotine) and began to eat with gusto, concentration, and a fair amount of non-proverbial syrup.

Pippi approached him with a tray that is equally laden and eyes that were slightly less dilated.

"Hey, long time no see."

Walter looked up, mouth full, and gestured toward a seat while he finished chewing and swallowing. "Yeah. Hi. Did I miss anything in Creature Languages yesterday?"

"... Big honkin' shark."

Walter stopped eating long enough to raise his eyebrows and ask, "How did that work? Magic, or just a big tank of water?"

"Big tank of water." she answered digging into her mound of breakfast food.

This is so not what they should be talking about, but she was tired of being sad and having to talk about serious things.

"How did those prank bots work out?"

It's possible that Nadia had overdone it in the gym that morning. Both her hands had bandaids across the knuckles, and she was walking a little awkwardly. . . .

Of course, that also might have had something to do with the fact that her jeans were long and baggy enough to cover her bare feet entirely.

She heaped food indiscrimanently onto her plate and looked around. She waved at Pippi, wondering for a moment why she was imagining her friend in a Bitterwoman outfit.

Pippi waved back.

Nadia looked rather how she felt.

"I don't know. I haven't seen them since I set them loose on Saturday." He shrugged and didn't stab his scrambled eggs because he was too hungry to stab them into oblivion again.

"But I think I heard the guy who used to live with DEATH, Macbeth, humming the Baby Back Ribs song, so I think at least one of them did its job.

Nadia shuffled over to join them, not because she was feeling particularly social, but she knew she did better around people than on her own.

She sat down a little heavily, liberally dosed her food with hot sauce, and started eating, content to just listen to a normal conversation for the moment.

"So yeah," said Pippi looking at Nadia and deciding she probably didn't want to talk about it just now.

"Big tank in the classroom with a great white shark from Australia named Bruce. Apparently, he was a vegetarian shark. And now the whole class talks shark with an Aussie accent."

Normal conversation indeed.

For Fandom? Talking sharks was totally normal.

Walter smiled at Nadia and looked her over carefully when she joined them. The plasters on her knuckles were new, but she didn't look otherwise injured. He was going to have to guess that it was a "you should see the other guy," sort of situation.

"Sounds as though I'll need to borrow your notes yet again," he said to Pippi.

"Always." she said, "You got the other vocabulary sheet from Zero in your email right?"

Considering the last time Nadia was at lunch looking unhappy, Pippi was almost afraid to ask, but the fact that she came up and joined them was a good sign. Considering how the weekend had gone in general, asking how she was would be pretty silly.

"I have that." Walter didn't mention that he'd ended up hand copying it into his notebook.

"Anything else good going on? Did anyone get turned into anything or gremlin bit or something?" Yeah, normal. In Fandom, at least.

Nadia smiled slightly as she ate, looking to Pippi for an answer to Walter's question.

Anything else good...

The basket of very special Wonka chocolates left in the room of a certain white suited nazi shithead with a note "complements of the hotel? No, best not bring that up.

"Pip, Anders, and I are planning an anti-emo pool party. And Nadia and I will be going shopping for bathing suits and stuff... At some point."

"Sounds fun. I'm in for anti-emo activities. I have some shopping to do later today." For a friend of his who had somehow lost her boots.

"Do you know when the party will be yet and is there anything I can do to help?"

"Next week probably." she said.

"I don't know. We were trying to figure out how to grill hamburgers and stuff without smoke since the pool is indoors."

Right. Shopping. Nadia had forgotten all about that. She thought for a moment about whether she had the money or not, then remembered she hadn't worked on Sunday, and still owed Mr. Giles money for the books. . . .

She'd have to go by Empire later, see what she could do about solving all of that.

And getting herself a new pair of boots.

Pippi tried to think about more good stuff to talk about...

She shoots...

"Nadia! Walter mentioned you had a nice dinner at the Cafe the other day? What was the occasion?"

Oh! And it bounces off the rim!

Nadia choked on her eggs and shot Walter a slightly panicked look before looking back down at her plate.

"No occasion," she mumbled softly.

Just her father showing up in town, drugging her, and then leaving again. . . .

Walter caught the look and groped for a distraction.

"Pippi," he interrupted, "have you decided when you're going to start your cruises? The weather has been getting much better. It would be nice to get out on the water."

Pippi is not entirely oblivious to the look and the subject change and welcomes the subject change.

"I was thinking of waiting to see what kind of weather spring brings to these waters. Sometimes you get your worst storms around this time of year."
