There was a ropes course set up in the Danger Shop. A real, live, not-at-all illusory ropes ropes course. Verity and Liam had once again fruitlessly searched for a gymnasium in the high school and found nothing, leaving the Danger Shop the only area open enough to build one.

So they had just built one. Screw you, weird Danger Shop glitch. Screw you.

"Hello," Verity said as the kids came in. "Hopefully you've all finished recovering from your Thanksgiving meal and/or visit and are ready to get back to working out."

Or whatever passed for 'working out' when it came to this class, anyway. Which your teachers were hoping would actually happen this time around! (And yes, they'd inquired about using the gym in town, but there had been something about a gremlin infestation and… look, nobody wants a gym class with surprise gremlins, okay?)

"You've had a week for that recovery, so we're not taking it easy," Liam said, not at all apologetic. "Today is- mostly- about upper-body strength, as we've put together a ropes course for you." With a variety of obstacles set at different heights, of course.

The moment the first student went to grab ahold of any of the ropes, the entire carefully-constructed course fell to the ground as a Danger Shop simulation went live. Instead of ropes, each student now had gloves that shot wires that would stick to various floating obstacles. See how far you can get!

"How is this happening?" Verity asked, staring at the abrupt change. "How. Is this. Happening?"

"This place has it out for us on a deeply personal level," Liam decided. "Or maybe just our class topic specifically?" Because the last time he'd taught, he'd used the Danger Shop a lot and it had been fine.

"No more," Verity declared. "I have had it. No more Danger Shop. Heck, no more teaching on this island. We'll go into Baltimore and take over some public school's library, I don't even care."

“There’s only two weeks left,” Liam pointed out, trying to be reasonable even as he felt much the same. “I’m sure we can tough it out.”

"We didn't even press the button, Liam!" Verity said, waving at the nonsense going on in the Danger Shop. "We didn't even pr--"

She stopped, getting a funny expression on her face.

And then, where there had been a very annoyed teacher standing in front of him moments ago, there was a very annoyed flying squirrel instead.

It took Liam a moment to process what the hell had just happened, given how he was usually on the other end of this whole animal-transformation thing.

“Okay, that’s just cheating,” he complained, bending down to scoop up his currently-a-flying-squirrel fiancée.

Power week is over and I'm so glad.
