Ethics, November 27, 2019

"Tomorrow is a major family-oriented holiday in the nation we find ourselves," Anakin began, "and there are a lot of ethical questions around it to explore. Today, we're going to talk about being put into a room full of extended family, or friends who are like family, and our ethical obligations to the truth versus our sociatal obligations to not make things super uncomfortable for everyone else in the room."

The 'Racist Uncle John' test, kids!

He gestured to the table in the back of the room, where a large variety of Thanksgiving foods (carefully labeled for allergies) were available. "The first option, of course, is to eat the entire day and therefore have your mouth too full to say 'that's an incredibly stupid thing to say, Racist Uncle John.' There's a spectrum from 'ignore all of it' to 'plant the turkey on his head and stomp out the door' to explore. How egregious would this relative have to be in order to get you to say something to refute him?"

He smiled. "It's better to practice here than tomorrow when bad argument timing can prevent you from getting to eat pie."
