Psych 101 (Monday, 04/03/2006, 3rd Period)

"All right, guys, it's getting on towards the end of the term," said Jenny. "Don't cheer too much, but we're gearing up to our final projects. Relieved? I've got some information on my desk about psychological experiments. I want you to review them, and come up with a short ~~handwavey if you want to do it that way~~ proposal for a safe, ethical experiment of your own. ~~One which you are in no way required to roleplay outside of class time if you don't want to, but people had fun with that last semester.~~" Jenny grinned. "This is the easy part--give me the proposal. And guys, next week, we're going to have a quiz. Fair warning, right?"

Elizabeth winced. "Um. Yeah. True. Um. I'm older than I look?"

"Yeah," said Jenny slowly. She nodded. "I pretty much got that. So what's the deal?"

Curiosity killed the cat. But what the heck, she had a few lives left, right?

Elizabeth sighed, and leant back in her chair. "There was an accident where I used to work, and," she winced. "Technically still do work. A piece of technology created a clone of me, only this clone - which is me, is nearly twenty-years younger than my original body."

"Wow." Jenny picked up her mug of coffee, wrapped her hands around it, and took a long drink. "That's got to suck for you. You couldn't pay me enough to get me to redo high school. College, on the other hand?" She grinned. "I had fun in college."

Elizabeth scowled. "Oh, they're not paying me enough. Trust me. But, they're bribing me with my college financing which I'm planning on racking up again."

"So you sit through a couple of years of sock hops and then get a free ride to the college of your choice?" Jenny shrugged. "Okay, I can see that. And at least now I know why you don't act like a typical teenager."

"Colleges," Elizabeth said firmly. "The written contract stipulates that they will pay for a post-secondary eduction equal to, or less than the original education attained." She laughed slightly. "To be fair, I don't think I was a typical teenager the first time around."

"Take 'em for everything you can get and then some?" asked Jenny. She nodded. "I can see that. Though you're even more atypical now." She twisted the coffee mug in her hands as they talked. "Not that I could put my finger on it easily. So how come you keep it a big secret?"

"Well, I think part of their tactics was to agree to the more sensible things I asked for to try and shut me up," Elizabeth shrugged. "They'll have to pay for three colleges, so it's not as if we didn't cap it." She fiddled with her hands. "Well, to start with, it's classified. Highly classified. And then there's possible reactions from the students. How would you have felt during high school knowing that one of your classmates was actually thirty-five?"

"Three colleges? Wait, are you telling me that one of my students already has a PhD?" Jenny frowned. "I've only got a Masters. That? Is so not fair. Not that I was actually planning on getting a PhD, but it does seem like something I should complain about, don't you think?" She grinned. "Here? I'm not so sure how they'd react. But at a normal high school, not so well. You know, we'd be about the same age if I hadn't spent nearly eight years off floating in the ether."

Elizabeth just looked innocent. "Um. I actually have two, although if we want to get technical with the naming conventions, one's a D.Phil," she said. "I had no idea that here was going to be like this when I first arrived. But telling people would lead to a number of questions I'm not willing to answer, even though trying to keep it secret can cause some headaches."

"Brag much, do you?" Jenny asked, laughing. "You know, in retrospect, the section on developmental psych is now pretty darn funny, don't you think?" She nodded slowly. "Like if you're talking to another adult and forget that you don't want to say things like 'twelve years of Catholic school?' But, gotta say, Fandom isn't so bad. The mysterious deaths and disappearances? Down to a minimum."

"No, not really," Elizabeth grinned sheepishly. She snickered slightly. "I didn't really want to ask too mny questions about it." Elizabeth groaned, and wiped at her face. "Yeah, something like that. Honestly, normally I'm better about not saying things I shouldn't be saying. I guess it's just comparing what you're used to. I can't say I've ever experienced mysterious deaths and disappearances."

"I know. If you bragged? You'd have let it slip ages ago." Jenny wrinkled her nose at Elizabeth and grinned before she took another drink of her coffee. "I'll bet not. How do you ask questions about that without too much of the awkward coming out to play, right?"

Jenny sighed. "You're not missing out. The worst part of coming from a dimension where magic is real? Well, the creepy-crawlies aren't just fairy tales."

"I'm used to keeping material to myself, but this went above and beyong everything else," Elizabeth admitted. "Exactly. It's always pretty much simpler to keep quite."

Elizabeth shuddered slightly. "It might not be magic, but where I come from has it's fair share of the more creepy aspects of life."

"The whole concept is a little weird," said Jenny, agreeing with Elizabeth. "That is usually the best way to keep a secret, after all."

Jenny frowned. "Okay, see, that? Is so not fair." She shook her head and hunched her shoulders slightly. "You talk about cloning and stuff, and I think, 'Hey, great. Science fiction. Hard to have demons in that kind of dimension!' And you've got your own creepy-crawlies."

"And it hasn't got any less weird in the last nine months," Elizabeth said wryly.

"Some of them are literally creepy-crawlies," Elizabeth added innocently.

"You'd think it would, given that you've had some time now to get used to the new body," said Jenny. "And the new situation. Of course, nine months as compared to thirty-five years? Big difference. Plus, gotta say, high school kinda sucks. Or at least it did if you were me."

Jenny was completely oblivious to any attempts on Elizabeth's part to make mischief, partly because she was thinking of some literal creepy-crawlies that she didn't want to run into. Like, ever. "Oh, tell me about it! Chaos demons. Ick. Slime. Horns. Like Herne the Hunter gone horribly, horribly awry." She shuddered.

Elizabeth shook her head. "Not so much. Of course, in some respects it's great having a sixteen year old body again. No more college knee injury for example. I'm taking high school a bit easier this time around."

Elizabeth pulled a face. "Eww. Ours tend to lack slime, so for that I guess I should be thankful."

"You should take it easy." Jenny nodded. "At least this time you know high school shouldn't be stressed over, right?"

"Very thankful," said Jenny emphatically. "I once heard about this snake guy at a fraternity? Talk about weird. Got any snake demons wandering around. Or, well, not necessarily demons. ~~Oh, no, that wasn't done for amusement's value at all.~~"

"I don't know how to," Elizabeth said simply. "Last time I had three older brothers to beat; this time, it's just myself."

"Um. There may be snake-like things ~~on planes~~," Elizabeth said cautiously.

"See, there's your problem," said Jenny. "Not that it's necessarily a problem. But is such a thing as being too Type A, you know."

"Ick," said Jenny, emphatically. "Snakes? Snakes are cool. But anything that looks kinda like a snake, but isn't?" She mock-shuddered. "Blecch."

"In my defense, I do know that," Elizabeth grinned, shrugging slightly sheepishly. "But it's always worked for me."

"I've never been particularly fond of snakes," Elizabeth admitted. "And I can safely say that I dislike them even more now."

"Hey, I'm a big proponent of the 'whatever works' school of thought," said Jenny. "I'm just saying it's hard to be Type A all the time."

"So this isn't something I'm going to have to worry about on the island, is it?" asked Jenny curiously.

"Well, yes, it can be," Elizabeth admitted. "But it's something that I'm going to keep doing until it becomes a problem."

Elizabeth hesitated. "It shouldn't be," she said cautiously. Camulus hadn't caused any obvious trouble so far, and he was the one Goa'uld she'd personally had the most to do with.
