Anakin had been sulking at home for the early part of the week and was only cheered up by waking next to a decidedly dude-llike Rory today. He was, however, going to press on with the day like he wasn't six inches shorter than usual ~~because his hair was still fabulous~~, and only looking slightly concerned at the blank space in the class where Nina normally was. (Force sensitivity was very handy for days like this--luminous beings were they, after all. Not this crude matter.)

"Right, so it's been an interesting week," he said dryly. "We're not going to talk about it because I can't think of a worse thing to have a group discussion over. Instead we're going to talk about cheating, and if you'd do it if got you something you wanted and you weren't going to get caught. And then if you'd cheat if it got you something you wanted and you'd maybe get caught. And then if you'd definitely get caught."

He could already guess about what some of the reactions would be.

"Here's the scenario: you've been struggling in a class this semester--pretend, in this scenario, you were taking more standard classes--and you get to an answer on a test that you can't solve. The test is worth half of your grade. You can see how the smartest kid in the class has solved it and no one is watching you. Do you write down their answer? Do you take the failing grade instead? Are the stakes too low if you are cheating just for a good grade, and if so, what would you cheat for instead?"

She woke up this morning and had male parts. She was dressed in her old clothes which were too small and very uncomfortable underwear.

Yeah. She so wasn't listening.

What would make you cheat? Are grades too low stake?

"You totally cheat," Okuyasu said without hesitation. "It doesn't hurt anyone, and you don't get stuck in school for something dumb. Because if only the super smart kid knows it, it couldn't have been actually important."

Surely that actually made sense.

Anakin blinked. "Because smart things aren't for everyone?" he guessed.

"I mean if everyone can't understand them, then that means they can't be for everyone, right? You can't do things if you don't understand them!" Okuyasu said.

He winced. This was a lot of high concept thinking for him.

"Well, if you were in a class about it, I'm guessing you were supposed to learn it," Anakin offered.

"I don't think classes are really that necessary to learning important stuff," Okuyasu said, to his teacher that taught his class. "Life just kind of does that. Cheating at school doesn't hurt anything, as long as you're not trying to be a doctor or something. And you said this question was about me."

"Okay, I'm definitely not cheating for grades," Vette replied, wrinkling her nose. Her nose, set on her broader, fuller face, and yes, she was sitting there in a lace-up skirt with the laces undone, because she had filled out a lot and hadn't had time to go shaking people down to see if they had pants that fit her broader frame. "I'm too stubborn for that. It's like a puzzle, and what good am I out in the wild if I can't solve a puzzle in the safety of a classroom?"

Lana nudged Vette with a (bare) foot. "Shopping after class?" she murmured.

Vette smiled faintly at that nudge. Lana? Probably Lana.

Eyes like those were hard to match.

"Shopping after next class? I'm in the pirate one, too."

Lana might not be quite as distinctive as Vette, but at least as the only Sith here, nobody was likely to miss who she was, either.

She grimaced in sympathy. "I'll meet you at the shop, then. This is so awkward."

"See, you say that," Vette replied, "but I bet it didn't take you twenty minutes to get a shirt over your head, either."

Vette, it wasn't a contest.

"I hate this, and it's stupid."

Just in case there was any question.

"True enough." Lana grimaced again. "I just wish I'd bought big enough shoes. If it's any consolation, you feel the same in the Force?"

She didn't think it would be, but you never knew.

"That would probably help a whole lot more if I had any sort of connection to the Force at all," Vette mumbled.

And then idly stuck her pinky finger into her ear again.

It was so weird.

"Sorry." Lana shrugged.

She hesitated.

"Would it be rude to ask if you still hear the same?"

"Sorry, what was that? I can't hear you," Vette deadpanned.

... Look, she'd always kind of wondered, too. But she was crabby today.

Lana stifled a laugh and toed Vette again. "You're terrible."

Anakin nodded. "But you'd cheat out in the wild."

"You bet I would," Vette replied, shrugging her shoulders. "The stakes are too high out there, it's not just for a stupid grade. If I was making my way through some ancient crypt and someone else had solved the puzzle to deactivate the next series of traps, I'd check their work, but you better believe I'm going to use it."

"Is that cheating or just using good research?" Anakin asked.

This is what had made him the world's...not greatest Jedi.

"If it gets me in and out alive? I'd say that's mostly just like... double-checking my work," Vette decided.

She was utterly shameless, so.

"I'd agree," Anakin said.

"And that," Vette declared, "is why you're a good Ethics teacher."

Because so long as his code of ethics aligned with hers, the lessons were great!

"Cheating on grades seems counterproductive," Lana agreed with Vette. "If the difference were keeping myself alive, though, you'd better believe I'll cheat."

"Would you cheat even if you thought you'd get caught?" Anakin asked.

"Of course," Lana said. "If I'm going to die anyway, I might as well attempt it."

"Are there things you wouldn't cheat to achieve?" Anakin asked. "Something that taking the easy way would make less satisfying?"

Lana shrugged. "Anything I'm doing for myself. Or any position I'd do damage in by the cheating. Or more damage than not cheating, anyway. People who cheat to get into positions of power, as an example, can't sustain it, and the whole thing ends up falling apart."

"I'm not sure what would happen if I failed a test, but it doesn't seem like cheating would be worth it. I don't know what would make me cheat," Grog admitted. "If you pretend to be good at something you're not good at, you're either not ever gonna get good at it, or you're going to have to keep pretending, and neither of those sound good."

"Because people will eventually figure out you're not good at it and then you're President of the United States?" Anakin said.

Rory had been ranting at home.

Sabine shrugged. "I would be the one someone tried to cheat off of because I studied."

Look. It was a rough day, at least she could rely on being too smart for her own good.

"Would you tell if you saw someone cheating from you?" Anakin asked. "Or write down the wrong answer?"

"It might depend on the circumstances," Sabine said, "but I work hard. I might not tell, but I'm not going to let them, either."

"Fair enough. Would you use it as leverage?" Anakin asked.

"No. That's their problem. I'm just covering my answer."

She could be plenty vindictive, but not over this.

"Blah blah blah. I'd cheat. I don't care. I have a penis."

Yep. Just laying it all out there and one part has nothing to do with the other.

Wasn't someone supposed to tell her about these things? Like her big blonde what's her name sib?

Oh yeah. She probably did and Eleanor forgot. What were they talking about?

"Oh, and I cheat again even if I did get caught and I just don't care about forking anything, okay?!"

Just not about anyone's bits. He DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW.

Kids are off from school today so I'm only around sporadically! SP=love!
