So You Want to Be a Pirate!, Wednesday, period two

The class met in the state room today instead of out on the deck, with chairs for all arranged around the large central table. There was a set of Jack's name-and-pronouns stickers on the table for anyone who wanted to fill one of those out, too.

"Right," Duke greeted from his own seat. He was dressed simply today, in jeans, a tank top, and a flannel, having not really felt up with trying to find a more piratical outfit in his new, more lady-like proportions. His name tag said Captain Duke and Him. Mostly. "So I figured some of you all wouldn't be up for a lot of running around this week, but it looks like the island decided to get pretty much everything in on the action. So today we're going to chill a little, and talk about treasure maps.

"So the theory is, that way back in the golden age of piracy, pirate captains would stash their ill-begotten goods on deserted islands, buried usually, and make elaborate coded maps that led to the treasure's location. This — pretty much never actually happened." Said the man who had an as-of-yet unknown hidden treasure stashed on his own damn ship. "But it's fun to imagine anyway. I've got some examples here if you want to take a look, and lots of paper for you to try to make your own. So that's what we're doing today. What's your treasure? Where's it hidden? What are the names of the landmarks along the way? All up to you. Draw up a map using Fandom as your base, make it as confusing to follow as possible, and then find someone to swap maps with and see if they can figure it out.

"Or, you know, chill out and oogle each other's new bits. You do you. In whatever shape you're currently occupying."

"Blast." Jack sighed, then held himself still. "If I knew the next time it was going to happen, it would be less disconcerting." He looked down at himself, and the few parts that were organic and now transformed. "It's not as if I have so very much that hasn't already changed."

"I wish I had something more helpful to say," Vette admitted, pulling those handfuls of hair back and into a ponytail that overlapped the rest of his hair. "When this sort of thing was presented to me as something that could happen, it was always kind of presented as this weekend thing, and," she set to work tying the ribbon, "it isn't the weekend, is it?"

"Not so much," Jack said, sounding glum. "Thank you for the help, though. Maybe I'll just cut this all off if it happens again." Easier than trying to braid with one metal-jointed and one flesh hand, anyway.

See Vette. See Vette pause mid-bow and look briefly very horrified.

"... I always forget that cutting that stuff doesn't hurt," she admitted sheepishly a few moments later, shaking her head a little.

Jack gave her an amused sideways look. "Sorry. I forgot that the reverse is true for you. But really, can you imagine if I could feel every one of these thousand hairs on my head?" And he thought they were annoying now. "I'd go mad. Quite, quite mad."

"I feel it just fine when someone gives one of my lekku a tug," Vette replied, "I really think it's probably better that my people generally only have two of them, instead of thousands."

For many reasons including but not limited to the weight alone, and the eldritch horror of that mental picture.

YIKES. Jack hopefully kept that thought off his face. "Do people ever have more than two?" he asked, curious. "I mean. There are people born without legs, or without one arm or another, but I don't think I've ever heard of someone born with extra? Although maybe being born with a tail counts?"

This was a philosophical rabbit-hole that was going to keep him up nights now.

"I've heard of as many as four," Vette replied with a shrug. "But that kind of thing is, like, super rare."

She tied off the little bow, and then stepped back to admire her handiwork.

"There. It's nothing fancy, but it should keep it all out of your mouth and eyes, at least."

Jack patted at it, then smiled when it stayed back. "Thank you. I appreciate that very much." He sighed, and said, "Now watch. I'll wake up with six legs because I wondered about it out loud."

".... That would be way weirder than this," Vette decided. "But for what it's worth, you'd at least be the friendliest spider I've ever met?"

Six legs, two arms, that tracked, right?
