Computer Science and Repair- Tuesday- 2nd period
The class was in the computer lab today. Kitty wasn't entirely sure when people were from, so in addition to sending out an email about it, she'd also put a note on the door to the regular classroom, with instructions on how to get there because she was nice like that.
"Hey, guys," she greeted them. "Welcome to Computer Science and Repair. I'm Kitty Pryde-Barton, and I don't really care what you call me. I've got a long and storied history in this field, building and programming and accessing certain things and the like." Most of it was even legal. "Now it's my job to teach it to you. My one rule here is to only use your powers for good. I don't want you using any of this to do anything nefarious, there will be no using it to bully anyone, and I don't want the FBI calling me for any reason. Most of the time we'll be in the Danger Shop where we can play around a little more, but today we're going to start off easy.
"This is introduction week, more or less, so I want to hear your name, when and where you're from, and what your experience level is on this stuff before we get into it."

Introductions
Re: Introductions
With the FBI bit, he wasn't sure if he should mention any of the hacking--which was literally all innocent and just done to mess with his friends by messing up their game items and things like that, but still...
"Right now," he said with a grin, "my thing has been some homebrew programs for the danger shop. Which, like, I know you don't even need to really program stuff for it, because, like, doesn't it just sort of...do whatever you want it to? But it's still fun to do, I think."
Re: Introductions
Partly because that was traditionally their final.
Re: Introductions
"It's a chocobo racing simulator!" Prompto burst out, almost before Kitty had even finished speaking, because he was clearly hoping she'd ask or at least open up the opportunity to talk about it, because it was clearly a point of pride for him. "You can select the color of your chocobo and everything and there's fireworks at the start, too! It's pretty great...if I do say so myself."
Re: Introductions
She didn't even know where to begin.
She definitely would not begin by pointing out that she had, only a few weeks ago, completely uprooted the fabric of her entire society by essentially hacking her way into the central accesses of their highly complex aritificial intelligence systems and giving them autonomy so they could rise up against a tyrannical regime that had been using and abusing them for thousands of years.
"My name is Lieutenant Tisarwat," insert forever-handwaved house name here, "and I'm from a place called the Radch that hardly anyone here seems to have heard of. We're a highly advanced society with faster-than-light travel and complex artificial intelligence systems that are deeply connected with our day-to-day lives. So this stuff should be..."
What was the word she was looking for?
"...quaint?"
Re: Introductions
Re: Introductions
In a morbidly curious, faintly bewildered sort of way.
"I'm actually really eager to learn more about how things work around here."
Hopefully enough to work her way up to developing into something even remotely civilized and useful...
Re: Introductions
Pause.
"But I know how to use a phone," he said. "That's got to earn me points, right?"
Re: Introductions
Re: Introductions
She was pretty good at it by now!
"Hardison's been teaching me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she added and then, almost sheepishly, asked, "Can you, like, elaborate on nefarious????????????????"
Nina.
Re: Introductions
Re: Introductions
That long pause was also probably not reassuring.
"So, like, don't get caught?????????????????"
NINA.
Re: Introductions
See, that question itself is worrying," Kitty told her.
Re: Introductions
And didn't make it any less dangerous.
"But, like, getting caught would definitely be my last resort for that sort of thing??????????????????"
Did that help?
Re: Introductions
"We're going to have to get deeper into this on another week."
Re: Introductions
"I look forward to that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she said brightly. "And, like, I'm glad to be here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Re: Introductions
They couldn't be helped!
Re: Introductions
She was doing this for you, idiot. This was all your fault.
Re: Introductions
Prompto snorted again, smirking, shaking his head. "Must be a cold coming on," he said with a shrug, just as loftily. "That's all. Definitely couldn't be anything else."
And, yeah, yeah, yeah, just keep on passing that buck, you technological nightmare.
Re: Introductions
Re: Introductions
Sorry, Kitty.

Re: Introductions
He was going to somehow cause any computer given to him to catch fire.
Activity
Re: Activity
THIS GUY!
Look, Prompto really was good at all this stuff. He did stuff like this in his free time, pretty much. But there was still no accounting for taste.
He was especially proud of managing to turn even the cursor into a chocobo when on the page. It went "Wark!" when you right clicked and "Kweh!" when you left clicked! It was pretty much the greatest thing to ever exist.
Re: Activity
The concept, of course, was not too unfamiliar: a digital page with information of interest to the person viewing it. The specifics, however, were what managed to stick her up a bit, and remind her of how clunky and inefficient technology on this planet was. Back home, most of the time, you would ask, and blink, and there was all the information for you that you could want, though she supposed they weren't much different from consoles you found here and there where there wasn't a connection to a station or you just didn't have the proper implants, and the instructions were right there and pretty basic, but having to do everything manually like this was just tedious.
And she had no idea even what to make a website of. She wound up spending half her time just playing with color options and themes and trying to adjust them in an aesthetically pleasing way, which, with some of these templates, was not easy...
Re: Activity
"What's a website again?"
Yeeeeah.
Re: Activity
Maybe she should have started out easier.
Re: Activity
Still basically witchcraft. Not that there was anything wrong with it in this instance.
