Computer Science and Repair- Tuesday- 2nd period

The class was in the computer lab today. Kitty wasn't entirely sure when people were from, so in addition to sending out an email about it, she'd also put a note on the door to the regular classroom, with instructions on how to get there because she was nice like that.

"Hey, guys," she greeted them. "Welcome to Computer Science and Repair. I'm Kitty Pryde-Barton, and I don't really care what you call me. I've got a long and storied history in this field, building and programming and accessing certain things and the like." Most of it was even legal. "Now it's my job to teach it to you. My one rule here is to only use your powers for good. I don't want you using any of this to do anything nefarious, there will be no using it to bully anyone, and I don't want the FBI calling me for any reason. Most of the time we'll be in the Danger Shop where we can play around a little more, but today we're going to start off easy.

"This is introduction week, more or less, so I want to hear your name, when and where you're from, and what your experience level is on this stuff before we get into it."

"Heeeeeyyyy," said Prompto, with the expected lopside grin and a lift of his hand, "I'm Prompto! I'm from a planet called Eos that is pretty much on the same level of technology as this planet right now, except we do more with, like, magic crystals and stuff? And I'm kind of the tech guy on my team, which at the moment mostly just means doing a lot of mods on weapons and video game stuff, so I'm always eager to learn, like, some new skills, you know?"

With the FBI bit, he wasn't sure if he should mention any of the hacking--which was literally all innocent and just done to mess with his friends by messing up their game items and things like that, but still...

"Right now," he said with a grin, "my thing has been some homebrew programs for the danger shop. Which, like, I know you don't even need to really program stuff for it, because, like, doesn't it just sort of...do whatever you want it to? But it's still fun to do, I think."

Whoo! So he was already ahead of the game!

"It's a chocobo racing simulator!" Prompto burst out, almost before Kitty had even finished speaking, because he was clearly hoping she'd ask or at least open up the opportunity to talk about it, because it was clearly a point of pride for him. "You can select the color of your chocobo and everything and there's fireworks at the start, too! It's pretty great...if I do say so myself."

Tisarwat was still convinced that this was some sort of joke, and whoever had put together her schedule and put this class on it had the worst sense of humor she could ever imagine. Computer science and repair? Seriously?

She didn't even know where to begin.

She definitely would not begin by pointing out that she had, only a few weeks ago, completely uprooted the fabric of her entire society by essentially hacking her way into the central accesses of their highly complex aritificial intelligence systems and giving them autonomy so they could rise up against a tyrannical regime that had been using and abusing them for thousands of years.

"My name is Lieutenant Tisarwat," insert forever-handwaved house name here, "and I'm from a place called the Radch that hardly anyone here seems to have heard of. We're a highly advanced society with faster-than-light travel and complex artificial intelligence systems that are deeply connected with our day-to-day lives. So this stuff should be..."

What was the word she was looking for?

"...quaint?"

"Oh, it's definitely still interesting," Tisarwat assured the teacher with a faint smile.

In a morbidly curious, faintly bewildered sort of way.

"I'm actually really eager to learn more about how things work around here."

Hopefully enough to work her way up to developing into something even remotely civilized and useful...

"I'm Owen Corley, I come from... some place you've never heard of, and, er, we don't have computers as you know them. Or the internet, for that matter."

Pause.

"But I know how to use a phone," he said. "That's got to earn me points, right?"

"I'm Nina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she chirped, once it was her turn. "And, like, my world doesn't have computers or anything technology-related at all but, like, I've been here for a year and I think I'm... pretty good at it by now??????????????"

She was pretty good at it by now!

"Hardison's been teaching me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she added and then, almost sheepishly, asked, "Can you, like, elaborate on nefarious????????????????"

Nina.

That long pause was also probably not reassuring.

"So, like, don't get caught?????????????????"

NINA.

"Sometimes the only way you can get the right information is by being within the enemy stronghold," Nina explained, which was true.

And didn't make it any less dangerous.

"But, like, getting caught would definitely be my last resort for that sort of thing??????????????????"

Did that help?

Nina would be sorry, but she wasn't sorry.

"I look forward to that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she said brightly. "And, like, I'm glad to be here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Maybe Prompto had a cold, because there were more than a few snorts going on from his general vicinity in response to Nina's introduction.

They couldn't be helped!

"Are you feeling alright, Prompto????????????" she said loftily, in her best 'you are beneath my notice' sort of voice.

She was doing this for you, idiot. This was all your fault.

So far beneath her notice that it garnered commentary, huh?

Prompto snorted again, smirking, shaking his head. "Must be a cold coming on," he said with a shrug, just as loftily. "That's all. Definitely couldn't be anything else."

And, yeah, yeah, yeah, just keep on passing that buck, you technological nightmare.

"I'm Trevor Belmont," he said, summoning all the confidence he could here. "I'm from a shithole of a country called Wallachia. Which is apparently now Romania. And I can turn a television on. Is that the same as a computer?"

Sorry, Kitty.

Trevor gave her a look that implied that neither if them believed that, but we're just going to play along with this.

He was going to somehow cause any computer given to him to catch fire.

Guess who was making the loudest, most obnoxious, gif-filled, playing-music-from-somewhere-and-you-can't-find-how-to-mute-it website dedicated to chocobos ever???

THIS GUY!

Look, Prompto really was good at all this stuff. He did stuff like this in his free time, pretty much. But there was still no accounting for taste.

He was especially proud of managing to turn even the cursor into a chocobo when on the page. It went "Wark!" when you right clicked and "Kweh!" when you left clicked! It was pretty much the greatest thing to ever exist.

[personal profile] lilac_eyed_lieutenant 2019-09-03 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Tisarwat didn't really know what a website was, and, at this point, she was too afraid to ask.

The concept, of course, was not too unfamiliar: a digital page with information of interest to the person viewing it. The specifics, however, were what managed to stick her up a bit, and remind her of how clunky and inefficient technology on this planet was. Back home, most of the time, you would ask, and blink, and there was all the information for you that you could want, though she supposed they weren't much different from consoles you found here and there where there wasn't a connection to a station or you just didn't have the proper implants, and the instructions were right there and pretty basic, but having to do everything manually like this was just tedious.

And she had no idea even what to make a website of. She wound up spending half her time just playing with color options and themes and trying to adjust them in an aesthetically pleasing way, which, with some of these templates, was not easy...

"So, a TV book." How concise. "Better than the one at the 'hologram' place."

Still basically witchcraft. Not that there was anything wrong with it in this instance.
