The weather was warm, the food smelled good, and there was a good chance the new folks were a little extra glittery. What else could go into a perfect day for the picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Magic?" Kuroko sounded surprised, and almost doubtful. She was also feeling just a tiny bit overwhelmed by Nina's intensity.

She shook her head and shrugged.

"Hi, Nina. I'm Kuroko Shirai. You can just call me Kuroko if you want."

"So what kind of magic can you do?"

"Oh my gosh, you're Mae's sibling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's great to meet you!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sorry, Kuroko, Nina was usually dialed up to eleven.

"Off-hand, like, I can use fire and water magic," she said, showing her hands to Kuroko. Each palm had a rune embedded in it, one a tiny droplet of water, the other a tiny flame. "But most of what I do is summoning?????????????? Like, things from other planes of existence???????????????"

"I am." Kuroko was still trying to figure out what she thought of her new big sibling. "I guess you know her, too."

"Summoning things?" She repeated. "What kind of things? Just whatever you want, or something else?"

"She's one of my friends," Nina said happily, "and she's, like, super great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"And, like, given enough time I can summon basically anything??????????????????" Though she hadn't tested that out. "But mostly I summon things that can fight????????????? Or, like, sometimes I summon pretty things because who doesn't want pretty things???????????? And they go home in a bit anyway so it's, like, a vacation for them?????????????????"

"Huh." That didn't sound quite like any power that Kuroko was familiar with.

"I've never heard of anyone doing anything like that back home, but it sounds neat?"

Though, wait.

"Do you often need things that can fight? Is that something that comes up a lot here?" Maybe there was some sort of local equivalent to Judgment?

"Well, the island does try to kill us pretty frequently......................," Nina mused. "Though, like, most of what I know is because if you want to travel at home, then you've got to be able to fight??????????????"

Or be able to afford to hire people to do that for you.

Kuroko licked her lips, looking thoughtful. "Do you mean that literally? About the trying to kill us part?"

Nina's smile faded.

"Like, a few weeks ago the island turned us all into toys and if you weren't perfectly happy and perfectly good then you were deemed a bad toy and were sent to the Toybox to be tortured and reprogrammed so you were a good toy again. And, like, if you were a really bad toy then... you got executed, so..................."

She was definitely not kidding.

"Why in the world would anyone stay here, then?"

Neither of which were her reasons for being here.

"And, like, for a lot people............ it's home, you know??????????"

Still not Nina's reason!

"Sounds like a pretty terrible home. I mean, I'm not about to start defending Academy City, but while that place is pretty terrible, the average person isn't, like, under constant threat or anything."

At least, not usually, you know?

Except for, like, those three or four times.
