Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was warm, the food smelled good, and there was a good chance the new folks were a little extra glittery. What else could go into a perfect day for the picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

And Nina, still caught terribly off guard by--well, he really did clean up nicely, didn't he? Oh my goodness--was maybe a little pink as she answered.

"I'm better than ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Today was being so, so kind to her in terms of attractive guys, it really was. "And you????????????????? Oh my gosh, though, you said you weren't coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And your suit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Wayne squinted a bit, blinking his squinting eyes, and feeling really grateful that they were all outdoors, because when he'd thought of this whole scheme, he'd forgotten to take into the account the particular pitch of all of Nina's extra punctuation.

"Rumors of my imminent departure," he declared, and took a sharp swig from his pop, "had been greatly exagerated."

And he was still a pretty fucking P-O'd about it, too, but he was trying his damnest not to show it.

Still, showing it or not, words like that generally weren't happy ones in her experience.

"I'm sorry," she said honestly, though she was glad he was back. It didn't mean she couldn't be sorry he hadn't gotten what he'd wanted too. "I know you, like, wanted to stay home............. but at least you got to visit, right??????????????"

Nina considered the odds of Wayne being grumpy at her for that and veered into more cheerful nonsense as a distraction.

"At least, like, it does mean you got a chance to show me how sharp you look in your suit, though!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, like, wow, Wayne, wow!!!!!!!!!!!"

She definitely approved of the suit. It was a good, good suit.

It was the one for funerals!

"Now, I hate to say I told you so, Nina, but...."

He paused.

For effect.

"I fuckin' told you so."

He took another swig from his pop.

"And yer right, at least I got to visit. I got to put in some good chorin', and got to spend some good quality time with al my bo's," and he'd missed those dogs so fucking much, "so I realleh can't complain."

Well, he could. Nina definitely knew that he could. But he wasn't. And anyone who knew how much Wayne could complain should probably appreciate that.

Yeah, Nina was giving him a bit of a side-eye there since, uh.

Sure, Wayne, sure.

Still...

"I've seen better," Nina said loftily, since if he was going to be a brat, she was going to be one right back. "Like, you're no prince................ but not bad, not bad at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Should I ask who you're dressing to impress today?????????????????????"

A beat.

"Oh my gosh, do you have a crush on someone?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!"

A scoff escaped Wayne just then, an offended little sound as he turned his head toward Nina, brow furrowed. He opened his mouth to say something, then seemed to change his mind, turning his head away again. He thought about what she'd said, and made the sound again, turned toward her again to say something, and then changed his mind and turned away again, still glowering. The third time seemed to be the charm, though, as he scoffed yet again, turned his head, and, y'wanna know what? This time he was just going to come right out and say it.

"Now where'd you go and get an idea like that into yer head?" he demanded. "I only did this to prove a point, and y'wanna know what, Nina? Point's proven. If I wanted to go and impress a girl, I wouldn't go do it by dressin' up! Okay? I'd do it by walkin' up to her, askin' her ouwt on a date, and take her fer a fucking milkshake. Like a real man."

To be fair, Nina was also the person who remained absolutely convinced that Lana and Norman were madly in love, so...

"I mean, like, dressing up is impressive too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she protested, since Nina felt there was absolutely nothing wrong with guys who dressed up to impress girls. She loved it when guys dressed up. It was super hot.

"Though your method, assuming you aren't just saying it, is super romantic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This was also true, though, and the road to romance took many, many forms!

And, to be faaaaiiirrrrrrr, Nina actually wasn't wrong in this case, it was just that Wayne himself hadn't quite yet come around to realizing it.

"Of course it is!" Wayne's offense now focused in on the implication that anyone could consider it anything but. "Who doesn't like being takin' out fer a fucking milkshake?"

Well, he supposed maybe people who were lactose-intolerant, but that also included him, and you could just power through something like that, if you realleh wanted to.

But now that he was thinking about it, he started to wonder what in God's green Earth it took for Nina to make milkshakes.

He was not going to ask.

Yes, but who?! Nina was d-y-i-n-g to know!

"Don't get mad at me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she protested, laughing. "I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Milkshakes are awesome and a date like that would be fantastic which, like, I'm sure whoever you like would agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Because now that Nina realized he was crushing on someone, she was going to be super supportive of it. All in the name of love!

That did seem like Nina was suggesting that there was someone who might fit neatly into that category there instead of it just being some nebulous future possibility of someone fitting into that category a little, now, didn't it? Wayne's eyes regarded her a little sideways, underneath a quirked brow.

"'Course she would," he said. "I wouldn't want to date a girl who didn't."

"Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina agreed since, like, that was the baseline apparently? "So, like, the real question is who........................."

That side eye was turning into a full-on glower now. This was definitely beyond a suggestion now.

"Who what, Nina?"

She grinned up at him, totally unfazed by his glower.

"What do you think?????????????" she asked impishly. "Honestly, Wayne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the one that brought this up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"It's called a hypothetical, Nina!" Wayne countered, his argument persistent. "Meaning a proposition made as a basis for reasoning, without any assumption of its truth! A what-if, a thought exercise, a mere possibiliteh! Figgur it ouwt."

Greatly daring, Nina reached out to pat Wayne on the arm.

"It's okay if you're, like, shy..................," she said earnestly.

She was here to help!

"I'm not...!" Wayne started.

"It's not that...!" He tried again.

And, again, the third time was a charm. "Yer barking up the wrong tree, there, missy!" he declared. "Believe me, if there was a girl I was sweet on, she'd know about it!"

Nina considered him thoughtfully, speculatively.

"But what if, like, you haven't figured it out yet???????????????????"

Because, Wayne, deny it all you wanted but you hadn't shown up in a suit to impress Nina.

That was right. He wasn't wearing the suit to impress Nina. Or anyone, for that matter! He was wearing it to prove a point!

And y'wanna know what? Point proven!

"Now if that ain't just about the goofiest thing I've ever heard, Nina, then, fuck, I don't know what is."

And Nina said a lot of goofy things.

She did! She was also right more often than people liked to admit!

"I missed you too, Wayne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" And, really, she had, but she was also going to laugh. "Oh my gosh, like, the girl you're interested in is going to be in for an experience......................."
