Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was warm, the food smelled good, and there was a good chance the new folks were a little extra glittery. What else could go into a perfect day for the picnic?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, okay." Keyleth frowned just a touch. "Well, hopefully it doesn't confuse any of the new kids too much, so they think there's two of you or something?"

It was a valid concern!

Was it?

Wayne frowned just a touch himself, brow furrowing as he looked at her.

"It's just different set of clothes, Keyleth!" he said. "It's still me inside him. Fuck. You can take the man out of the flannel, but you can't take the flannel outta the man. Anyone who gets confused by that has clearleh been eatin' too much sugar cereal! Figgur it ouwt!"

"Well, I mean, okay, yeah," Keyleth said in a slightly hesitant voice. She was amused, but now she was worried she'd really said something that offended him. "That should be easy enough for the people who know you already, but the new kids could get confused. Especially if someone's told them about how people sometimes look alike here?"

It was nothing personal, Keyleth. It was just Wayne. Just about every other word out of anyone offended him.

"That's all well and good," he said, "but you're seriously gonna stand there, Keyleth, and tell me that just because I put on a different set of clothes, that means all the new kids are going to go and think I'm a completely different person? Fuck a duck, Keyleth, what happens if I start wearin' a different color? You tellin' me it's gotta be all green, all the time, because, sure as God's got sandals, as soon as I put on a red one, it'll be like I'm a whole different person. Because God forbid a person go and....change clothes."

"Okay, okay!" Keyleth held up both hands. They might have been flailing just a little. "It was just a question, a little hypothetical, that's all."

Hey, in her world, sometimes you could put on an item of clothing and it really could make you a whole different person.

"There's nothing wrong with variety. Spice of life, right? That's what the saying is? You know what, let's just say all of that was me trying to make a joke and not doing a great job of it, maybe?"

Wayne considered this for a moment, and the the flailing, and then, maybe, a little, his tone, and he gave a faint grunt.

"I have been known to have a very....selective brand of humor," he allowed. "And a bit of a... ....party pooper."

"Maybe," allowed Keyleth, though she wasn't entirely sure what being a party pooper entailed, "but I like you anyway."

And, now, who didn't like to hear something like that?

"Thank you, Keyleth," Wayne said. "Yer not so bad yerself."

Even if it was a bit fruity loops thinking someone would ever confuse him for someone else all because he went and put on a different set of clothes.

Hey, it could happen!

"Aw, thanks Wayne." She grinned at him. "I'll do my best to try and make it to breakfast one of these mornings, okay?"

"That'd be real nice of you, Keyleth," Wayne nodded. "It's always a good breakfast and there's always more'n enough to share, and I'm sure you know yer welcome any time."

"I know, it always sounds like a fun time." Keyleth gave him an apologetic look, biting the side of her lip. "I keep meaning to stop in, but ~~work won't stop chewing on me~~ . . . it seems pretty busy most of the time."

And socializing was hard.

"Some days more'n others," Wayne allowed. "But I always try'n make enough and, if I don't, well, I can always make more. Not much to it, though. Mostly just whoever makes it in, havin' some breakfast, usually talkin' 'bout their weekends. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, though, Keyleth, might as well try'n start yer days out right."

"Wow, you feel pretty strongly about it, huh?" Keyleth sounded more impressed than anything, really. "And you're not wrong! Gotta have enough energy to make sure the day gets off to a good start!"

She'd been smiling a little bit maniacally for that statement, but tempered it down into something more serious.

"And I like that you try to make sure other people do, too. It's a really thoughtful thing to do."

"Well," said Wayne, modestly, after taking a swig from his pop, "it's tradition now, y'know. An' you don't fuck with tradition."

"Tradition's important," Keyleth replied carefully. She didn't necessarily agree, entirely, but she got what he meant. "So don't worry, I won't be trying to talk you into fucking with it."
