Fun with Science! | Tuesday, 4th period

"Well, I figure we can go one of two ways today," Miguel said when class arrived. "We can stick with the water, or we can go fire instead." He had a brief flashback to Beaker. "I figured we'd stick with water. So - today we're building hydroelectric generators! But not just, like, water wheels. I want rube goldberg machines - make them as complex as you can, but still functional."

He programmed in a stream of water on one side of the room. "Hey, at least I'm not flooding the whole thing. There's your power source." He programmed up a pile of funky-looking lightbulbs in a box. "There's your goal. See how many you can light up and how intricate you can make the generator. Enjoy!"

Wayne was squinting and frowning at the instructions as they came in, not because he was worried about his ability to make a generator with water, though, not in the slightest, he knew he could do that and do a damn good job of it, too, but because the whole concept behind rube goldberg machines and the idea that he had to make something as convoluted and unnecessarily complicated as he could went against nearly everything that existed at the very core of his being.

He didn't care what the assignment was. He was going to make the most efficient power generator he could come up with, he didn't care if he wound up failing. What was he going to do, get all worked up because he failed at being inefficiant? That sort of back-assward pageantry was just the sort of thing he was completely fine with not being a part of, he could tell you that much.

Pitter-patter!

And there would be Wayne, standing with his arms crossed in front of him in stiff defiance, beside his incredibly simple, entirely proven wheel-based hydroelectric generator and its nicely glowing lightbulbs, ready to defend...to the death, if he had to...the importance of good old simplicity and efficiency.

"I fail to see what's so fun," Wayne drawled firmly, "about wasted time and inefficiency."
