Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the picnic continued, there were tables and chairs arranged on the lawn, the food smelled delicious and inviting, and no one was going to be bitey without explicit consent. Hopefully, everyone would take some time to enjoy themselves!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It could have been better," Lana agreed. "But we all came out of it well in the end, except for a few bumps and bruises, so I suppose we should count it a win."

Nina considered that solemnly.

"Do you, like, think that because it was all fixed that it... it doesn't matter??????????"

Lana frowned. "Everything matters. But we came through it; that's what's important. In any battle, eliminating your enemies and losing none of your own is the best you can hope for, isn't it?"

"But, like, what if there shouldn't have been a battle in the first place????????" Nina wondered.

"If we wanted to live, there had to be a battle," Lana answered. "I doubt they'd have left us alone on the island for long; we were clearly a threat. Better to be proactive about it."

"There was a barrier up," Nina pointed out. "One that, like, they couldn't get through."

Lana looked grim. "I don't think that was up to do us any favours. There was something wrong about it. Besides, I don't think I'm alone in not liking being caged."

"So it's okay to knock a cage down because you don't like it, when you don't know what's behind it and you don't know what consequences that will have to everyone else on the island???????????"

Nina's fingers curled around her diary.

"If, like, it was just me in a cage, I would totally knock it down. But, like, when you're in a cage with babies and children and others who are defenseless... you have to be more considerate."

"Okay?" Lana gave her a bit of a side-eye. "I didn't bring it down, although if it had lasted much longer, I probably would have tried."

"I mean, like, are you okay with the fact that other people knocked it down not knowing what was beyond it, putting everyone in danger, without even trying to see what was beyond it???????????"

Because, like, Nina wasn't.

"I'm not," she said, frowning at that side-eye. "I think it was terrible and awful and now I don't know what to do."

Mostly about Prompto.

"Well, I certainly think it would've been smarter to have a bit of backup and let people know what they were doing," Lana said. "But if it felt as wrong to them as it did to me, I can't exactly blame them, either. Besides, how could we have seen what was beyond it?"

"Prompto and Norman figured out how to break it," she said quietly, looking down. "They could have tried to figure out how to look through it, if they'd wanted. But they didn't even try."

"Breaking things is a lot easier than changing them," Lana pointed out. "I'm not saying they shouldn't have tried, or maybe asked for more help, but hopefully they've learned to do that in future. Any lesson you walk away from is a good one."

Sith.

"And what about the people they hurt in being so careless????????????" Nina asked, frowning. "Are they, like, just to learn lessons too?????????"

"Of course," Lana said. "Any battle you walk away from is a lesson. It's not like any of us are experienced Moffs or anything - we all probably could have done something better."

She frowned. "I killed one of those vampires. It startled me how easily it died. If another had been there, they probably could have gotten me in that second. I need to be more careful. At least mine was a lesson without injury. I was lucky."

"There were people who weren't lucky," Nina said quietly. "And that's not through their own carelessness. They wouldn't have been in danger if it hadn't been for Prompto and Norman."

Her gaze sought them out. Prompto trying too hard to be cheerful, taking pictures. Norman reading a book of some sort under a tree.

"I'm so angry at them. Especially Prompto. He's training to be a guardian, a protector, and he did that. He put innocent people in danger and, like, if we were anywhere but here, anywhere but this island... I don't think it would have just gone away, the way it did. I don't know what to do."

Could she live with herself, if she just forgave them so easily? It wasn't a small mistake they'd made. Lives had been lost. Lives that mattered to Nina.

"Did you know that Vette and Sidon were two of the bitten?" she asked Lana. "That, if this hadn't gone away, they'd still be out there, dead and raving and hurting others. All because of Prompto and Norman."

"They wouldn't have been in danger right then if not for Prompto and Norman," Lana corrected. "I doubt our safety would have lasted. But absolutely, be angry with them about it. They should have been more careful, and people got hurt."

She glanced toward Prompto. "If he's training to be a protector, knowing he failed and hurt those he cares about is probably a terrible lesson, but I doubt he'll forget it. And honestly, Nina, you can't dwell on 'if'. That's a horrible if, but it didn't happen. A lot of awful things might happen. Best to focus on the ones that do."

"I can't help it," she said, watching Prompto. "One of my jobs is to think of the 'if' and take steps to make sure the if that happens is the best one."

Had she ever told Lana what she did?

"And... and if I lost Vette... or Sidon... I don't know what I'd do..........."

"I'm not saying don't think of them ahead of time," Lana corrected. "Absolutely do. But once something's passed, unless the ifs teach you something, why bother? There are better ways to fuel your anger. And Vette and Sidon are both better now. We'll see they stay that way."

"I wasn't even here," Nina admitted. "Maybe I'm the angriest at myself."

How could she look after people if she wasn't around?

"That's a good anger," Lana said. "It's less likely to send you off on a mad chase, in my experience."

"A mad chase where?????? I don't know what to do about being so angry."

"Normally I'd say channel it into the Force," Lana said. "Channel it into...whatever you do? Go to the salle and work it out? Use it to become a better fighter."

"But, like, that doesn't help when I wasn't even here, Lana," Nina sighed, slumping back in her chair, decidedly unladylike in that moment. "No amount of working out is going to get past that or how disappointed I am in Prompto."

"I don't know what to tell you about that," Lana confessed. "Just...try and work past it. You're human; so is Prompto."
