Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the picnic continued, there were tables and chairs arranged on the lawn, the food smelled delicious and inviting, and no one was going to be bitey without explicit consent. Hopefully, everyone would take some time to enjoy themselves!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Almost all of them," Norman agreed, turning a wry smile toward Barnabas. "With a few notable exceptions. And people-shaped is pretty good for conversation. I don't think I'd know which fish I was supposed to be talking to, if you were a bunch of them, and I wouldn't want to be rude."

"All of them," Delirium said absently, "They're all me all the time even when I'm not me." She focused on him again. "Are you ever not you-shaped?"

"Only when the island turns me into a crab," Norman offered. He closed his book. He was reasonably certain he wasn't going to be getting much reading done for a while, anyway. "And then I guess I'm me-as-a-crab-shaped."

Del nodded. That made perfect sense to her. "Do you like being a crab-shaped Norman?"

"Hmm, maybe only sometimes," Norman hedged. "Being a crab isn't too bad, but they're not very good at reading comic books, and apparently lots of things eat crabs."

"Comics are maybe not written in crab," Delirium offered, "I won't let anything eat a crab-shaped Norman. What would I do in a room by myself?"

You don't want to know. Without some sort of structure, it would be literal chaos within days.

"Do you like people to read to you when you're a crab?"

So help him, Norman was kind of touched, actually.

"That... would be really nice," he admitted. "It's not very exciting being a crab, except when things are trying to do the eating."

"I can read when you're a crab," Delirium said, quite pleased that she could do a thing. "I've never read comic books to a crab before. Should I practice while you're boy-shaped?"

"I want to," Del said, reaching for the comic, "I've never read any comic books before. I'm very good at reading, though. Lucien lets me borrow books as long as I return them to the same where and when that I borrowed them from. He doesn't like it when I return them to the wrong ones. My big brother has a book.. Not Lucien. Lucien's my other brother's butler. A big book that he doesn't like other people to read but it doesn't matter. He's not trying to be mean and anyway I know everything in that book and who even likes a book you already know the endings to?"

Barnabas winced.

Norman handed the comic book over - an extra cheesy one about zombie cowboys - and was suddenly faintly certain he didn't necessarily want some of that to make sense. At least, going by Barnabas' reaction, there.

If he was reading it right, anyway. A wince was a wince was a wince, right?

"Well, maybe my comic books will have some new endings that you don't know yet?"

"I like new endings," Delirium agreed, "As long as they're nice endings. Sad endings and bad endings are ok sometimes but there's so many of those that nice endings are just that much nicer when they appear, don't you think?"

She took the comic and settled back with it and, beginning with the cover, she began reading. Except.. no. She was certainly telling a very exciting story about zombie cowboys, but the story she told had little to do with the words in the comic because she was paying attention to the pictures instead. Zombie cowboys rode nightmares except it was daytime so they were daystallions and they herded the sheep that people counted when they tried to go to sleep but the sheep kept disappearing as people fell asleep and stopped counting them, so the zombie cowboys had to go through the realm of dreams and bargain for a path into people's dreams so they could collect the missing sheep and herd them back. The master of the dream realm was a little annoyed but not so very annoyed but a little bit annoyed that people were stealing dream sheep because other people needed to count them to get to sleep, but they weren't stealing them on purpose and that was why he was only a little bit annoyed and he let the zombie cowboys go retrieve their sheep so other people could count them and go to sleep and have nice dreams. The zombie cowboys were very pleased with their work and got to shear their sheep which made a very nice wool that was soft and not itchy and didn't shrink when you washed it even in hot water so the zombie cowboys had nice sweater vests to wear after they ..did.. stuff.. with the wool.. you know? The thing.. with the little pointy.. stick things.. and the.. sort of knotty twisty sticky thing that makes sweaters? That thing, and then they had sweaters! And it was all very nice and they rode around singing songs and eating beans and maybe farting because that's what happens when you eat too many beans and zombie farts probably smelled really bad but they couldn't help it and anyway they were in a field with sheep who ate all sorts of grass and that was fiber and fiber also makes farts so there was probably a big farty cloud but the zombies wouldn't care and the sheep wouldn't care and maybe the horses would care but probably not because they ate grass too so it's not like they didn't fart, but everyone was happy and all things were nice and that was it, the end.

By the end of her story, Norman couldn't help it, he was actually grinning a little. Partly because that had been ridiculous and a little adorable, and... partly because he was a sixteen-year-old boy. Farts were hilarious.

"Speaking of new endings," he mused, "I don't think I've ever heard that one before. But I like it. You're welcome to read any of my comic books from now on."

He'd memorized the old endings to most of them already.

Delirium gave a little cheer and offered him his comic back. "That's good then. When you're crabbed shape, I will read the comics to you so you don't have to try and walk all over them to read them and maybe get them wet because that's bad for papers and the ink might run and then you'd have a whole new story but maybe not one you meant to have?"

"That sounds like a great deal," Norman agreed, smiling as he took the book back, looking down at it fondly.

Well. He was never going to be able to read this one without thinking of zombie farts ever again.

"Something to look forward to, even."

And then it had un-happened at the worst possible moment.

... Well, no, at the Homecoming dance would have been the worst possible moment.
