Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I try not to eat cheese that's gone green if I can help it," Vette promised, starting toward the food table. "But white or orange, they have. They should have? It would be weird if they didn't have it."

"It's very ick," Del agreed, following a step behind so she could admire Vette's lekku. "I like your stripes very much. They're sort of like a tiger? Only not much like a tiger because they're not furry and they don't have big sharp teeth nor do they seem very likely to pounce on people but the stripes are nice and tigery. Do you always have stripes?"

"I always have stripes," Vette replied, throwing a little grin over her shoulder. "I don't always get compared to a tiger, though. I think I can live with that, actually. I have totally been known to pounce on people."

Mostly for the fun of it. Occasionally for important tickling purposes.

Delirium nodded sagely, "You should if you feel tigery. I would. I've never been a tiger before."

"Not right now, Delirium," Barnabas suggested.

"Well, no," Del agreed, "Vette has stripes so she gets to be the tiger right now. I'll be a tiger later sometime, maybe."

"Later sometime," Vette agreed, after pausing a moment to picture just what kind of reception a tiger would get at a picnic like this. Half panic, half immediate fighter response, depending on who had been here for how long? "Unless you were maybe a tiny tiger. A tiny tiger probably wouldn't be too bad."

She speculated.

Vette was not always full of the good ideas.

Delirium looked doubtful. "I've never done just one little thing before."

She glanced to the side and suddenly a tiny multicolored butterfly fairy kitten appeared, ran a few steps through the air and disappeared again.

Del thought about it for a moment and shrugged. "Close enough."

Please pardon Vette for just one moment. Because she needed to look at that kitten, and gasp, and then make a happy sound usually associated with dolphins, mostly.

Sorry, Barnabas.

Barnabas' ears went flat and his ears weren't even made to do that. He whined.

Delirium just looked confused. "Did you mean to say that in whale?"

Vette's cheeks might have flushed the faintest bit purple as she reached a hand up to clap over her mouth.

"I don't know," she replied, "it just kind of came out."

And then, because she was curious now, added, "What did I say?"

"Krilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll," Delirium chimed.

"Nope," Vette decided. "I definitely didn't mean to say that in whale."

But she was grinning a little, anyway. She couldn't imagine what else whales really had to talk about, but it probably could have been worse, somehow.

Delirium nodded. "I didn't think so. You don't have gills." She paused between one step and the next, "Not on your neck, I mean. Do you have gills?"

"I don't," Vette replied, shaking her head. "But I think my boyfriend does. Does that count?"

She didn't think for an instant that Sidon would be satisfied just eating krill, though.

Delirium blinked. "No? I don't think you can share gills with other people? Maybe he can? I don't know. The only people I meet that have gills are merpersons or fishheaded people and then I have to talk all bubbles and it really upsets land people when I do that and there's no water so I try not to. Is your boyfriend a merman?"

"I have no idea what that is," Vette replied, blinking. "He's a Zora. He's..." She looked around the crowd, not that it took much to find him, and pointed Sidon out. "He's him."

"It's a.." Delirium started to explain but then Vette pointed and that was much more interesting than an explanation so she looked and her eyes went really big.

"Oh," she said in a softly awed voice, "Oh wow! He's sort of like the fishheaded people only it's his everything and it's not a fish it's a shark and it's really cool! That's what a Zora is? A big sort of shark-shaped-a-little-bit-kinda sort of person?"

"Mostly shark-shaped-kinda," Vette agreed. "Though his dad kind of looks more like a whale and there are some who look like... well, we've got thrantas back home that kind of look like them, but I'm not sure if there's an Earth equivalent. It's actually really interesting, just how different they can be. It makes me feel less weird when I'm around them."

Kind of.

"I don't know what a thranta is," Del admitted after a moment of thought. She turned a tiny frown up at Vette. "You're not weird. I know weird and you're not. So you can't feel less weird if you're not weird to begin with."

"Aww. I like you," Vette decided, smiling a little. "Not weird, then. Different? Less different."

Here? Here she felt a lot different.

"I like you too," Delirium smiled up at her, "You're nice. Different is good. Different makes you not all the same as other people and there are some people you wouldn't want to be the same as. It would be hard to tell everyone apart if they were all the same anyway. I have enough trouble telling people apart sometimes."

"Hey, some people don't do much to really earn the distinction anyway," Vette decided. "They're not interested in doing anything, they just kind of go through the motions. That's not for me."

"That's true but sometimes it's better because earning distinction isn't always for nice reasons," Del answered after a moment of thought, "What do you do when you're not studenting here?"

"When I'm not studenting here, I'm mostly being stuck here," Vette sighed. "I do work in the scrapyard, and I sell weapons, and if I could get home I'd go on adventures."

A pause.

"Unless you're asking because you want to know what there is to do for you when you're not studenting, here? That might be different."

"I go on adventures!" Delirium chirped with a bright smile, "Maybe you could come with me sometime!"

Barnabas slowly shook his head.

"I don't know what I'll do when I'm not studenting. I haven't started studenting yet so I won't know what it feels like when I'm not until I start," Del explained.

Vetted watched Barnabas shake his head, looked momentarily tempted to agree in spite of it, and then just decided to roll with the topic change, instead.

"Well, if you're ever not studenting and you don't know what to do, you can come find me," she offered. "I'm sure we can come up with something fun to pass the time with until you figure this place out well enough to know what you'd like to do on your own."
