Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal chuckled. "I look forward to seeing what you come up with. What inspired you?"

Summer just sort of shrugged a little, though the faint grin lingered easily. "I don't know," she said. "It's just I've been playing around with so many different ideas every week for the store, trying to really get a good idea on what kind of menu I want to do when I open my shop, and, looking into it, it's kind of crazy, some of the stuff I've come across. I mean, I've been to universes where I've eaten ice cream with flies in it and there's cereal made out of eyeholes, and even I think some of this stuff is completely gross and a crime against culinary arts. So of course the next logical step is to exploit it for a summer class and share it with hapless, unsuspecting students."

Hannibal grinned and leaned in. "One of the foods in my first class is fried tarantulas. We shall have to compare notes."

Slightly more seriously, he added, "Many foods that used to be commonplace are considered quite horrible now. And just as many were never very good to start with."

"Is it cheating if I try to find a way to encorperate those into my lesson plans?" Summer wondered, completely rhetorically because, mmm, no, gross. But she was now definitely thinking she'd need to pick Dr. Lecter's brain a little before going into the next session if she decided to stick with the theme. "And, yeah, those, the latter. The ones that were definitely never very good to start with; those are the ones I'm hoping to really bring to light this semester. I mean, hopefully, maybe I'll even get a nice diverse class and some of the students would actually think they're great."

Fat chance, she figured, but it would be pretty valuable market research.

"No matter what you have, someone is likely to enjoy it," Hannibal said. "Unless they are all modern local humans, in which case, my sympathies upon your dreadfully boring class."

"Hey, now," said Summer, "I'm a modern semi-local human, and I resemble that remark. We're not all dreadfully boring, you know."

And, yes, she realized that she was also a considerable exception to that rule because not all modern semi-local humans also had mad genius dimension-hopping grandfathers, but still.

"If anything, I think that'd actually be better, because then they'll understand the different nuances of horribleness with the things I'm going to make them create. And eat. They'll have a cultural perspective on it that'll really be quite valuable."

"True," Hannibal allowed. "But they're also more likely to find things universally terrible, with less variety than you would find with other species, or with those who are used to things like fly-flavored ice cream. Will you be taking video of your classes?"
somethingwithturquoise: (good idea hatching)

"I can," said Summer, tilting her head as she considered it, "if you'd be interested."

Even if that meant that now she'd be nervous about messing up and Dr. Lecter getting an eyeful of the resulting disaster.

"And, I mean, I guess their reactions would make for a pretty good Instagram account, too."

No, Summer, don't exploit your students for social media likes.

She was totally exploiting her students for social media likes now.

"With their permission, of course."

"Of course."

Really, it would be much more fun if they didn't know. Though maybe they'd become blasé about it and behave naturally after a while.

"You'll have to let me know where to go to subscribe."
somethingwithturquoise: (just so happy right now)

Eh, Summer was a little more conscious about consent in that sort of thing considering her best friend would rather just make a twitter for his dog than ever even go near one of himself (which worked out in the end, really, Stance's twitter was the best), but, hopefully, the recipes themselves would be more than enough to blow away any walls of self-consciousness.

"Absoutely," she promised.

"Oh, come on," said Summer, who figured that Dr. Lecter had to know that denying her information was only going to make her want it more. "It's not like I'm taking the class. And I'm not going to go running off all eager to spread the hot gos to all your students."

"This particular class is less about exciting food, and more about getting them to think about why they eat what they do," Hannibal explained. "Don't worry; if I include gelatin, I will be certain to invite you."
