Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I have also never had to share a room," Wayne admitted, though he was used to people coming in and out of the farmhouse a bit, "so this'll be an adjustment period for the both of us. I'm pretty easy to get along with, though, long as you mind your P's and Q's. Not one to make a fuss, if I can help it."

"Same here," Okuyasu said. "I don't like to mess with people who haven't messed with me first. We should be fine as long as we respect each other."

"Respect," Wayne repeated with a nod, and, maybe, just maybe, a faint, satisfied, agreeing sort of smile. "That's a Texas-size 10-4, there, bud."

Sure, okay, the guy seemed a bit fruity-loops on the outside, but, so far, he was proving to be a pretty upstanding fellow underneath it all.

Here's to hoping it stayed that way.

Besides, everyone here so far seemed at least a bit fruity-loops anyway.

"Oh, you're from Texas?" Okuyasu said. "That's from here in America, yes?"

Dammit, Okuyasu! And you were doing so well!

"No, I'm not--" Wayne started and, clearly a little flustered and put off by the assumption, seemed to have trouble continuing for a moment. "I'm not from--"

"It's a turn of phrase, there, Big Shoots," he said. "Figgure it ouwt. Texas! M'not from no fucking Texas, I'm not even from the States. From Canada, and don't you fucking forget it."

So he had a lot of pride for home and hearth, so sue him, and he shook his head, blowing out a breath, still not quite over it. "Fuckin' Texas..."

To be fair, though, Okuyasu, it was really a very reasonable assumption, just don't let Wayne hear that.

"But I take it," he said, because this was his roommate now and respect and all that, "you're not exactly from 'round these parts, either, are ya, super chief?"

"I'm from Japan," Okuyasu said with a bit of a grimace. "I take it Canadians don't like to be called American, huh? I'll be careful of that in the future. No offense meant."

Well, Wayne couldn't speak for other Canadians, of course, but he clearly felt pretty strongly about the whole thing.

"Well," he said, giving Okuyasu a nod. "Just don't make a habit out of it. You're a bit far from home for just a summer camp." Pause. "And/or summer school, dependin' on which brochure you got, by the sounds of it."

Okuyasu shrugged. "While I'm going to miss my friends from home, I think getting some time away from my hometown will be good for me," he said.

"You're here from a different country too, though."

"Oh, yeah," Wayne agreed easily enough to that, "sure, but, I mean, still the same continent. I just had to cross a border; you had a whole ocean and then most the country, besides."

He squinted a bit thoughtfully for a moment, though. "My uncle Eddie said 'bout the same for me," he noted. "That gettin' some time away from home might be good for me."

He didn't sound too terribly convinced.

"Said it builds charactah."
