Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

When Beau came by to bring her a plate of food, it was purely a thoughtful gesture, really!

Okay, not really; it was in part meant to prove that see, she was fine, for real, and also partly as thanks for all the TLC since yesterday, but it was at least partly a thoughtful gesture as well.

She almost looked cheerful. She was going to blame that on the painkillers.

"You should be resting," Karolina told her anyway, with the long-suffering sigh of someone who knew saying so was fruitless and so she was just getting it over with.

"I spent, like, all day yesterday resting," Beau pointed out with a sigh of her own, in a mildly indulgent tone that suggested this was not the first time they'd had this conversation. "I'm fine, babe, seriously."

She was carrying a covered casserole dish in the hand that hadn't been holding the plate of food, and kept giving it bemused looks.

"I double checked, by the way, and everything I got you is vegan."

Really not bolstering your own reputation as an asshole here, Beau.

"Aww, babe, thank you."

Yes, that was a sincere, non-sarcastic 'aww' because that was how she rolled. And also went to show how easily distracted she could be with niceness.

... Doubly so, when she noticed the casserole. "Wait, what's that?"

Yeah, Beau might be perfectly well aware of how well that worked as a distraction tactic. Ahem.

"It's, uh . . ." Beau gave her a slightly perplexed look and a shrug. "Steve just gave me this. I think it's supposed to be like a get-better present or something?"

Somehow, Karolina managed to pull off an even more awed 'aww'. And then another quizzicalhead-tilt. "Isn't that like a casserole or something? I think I would've expected apple pie."

Because, you know. Captain America.

"If I'd actually expected anything, anyway."

Beau raised her free arm in an exaggerated shrug, then immediately regretted it when her ribs twinged . . . but hopefully she hadn't actually winced visibly.

"Yeah, I don't get him, really," she admitted. "But he said he made it for me, and I'm not turning down free food, so . . ."

It was her turn to tilt her head inquisitively.

"What do you mean, if you'd actually expected anything?"

Karolina shrugged. "I mean, get-well casseroles, or apple pies, or anything aren't much of a thing where I'm from," she said. "And on top of that, I'm gaving a hard time imagining Captain America cooking."

Most of the time, these days, she managed to think of Steve as just Steve. Maybe it was the close proximity to heroics this time around that had her back stuck on Cap.

"Huh." Beau's face scrunched up into a thoughtful, surprised look. "I didn't realize you knew him, for some reason. He's like a big thing in your world? And I was just being a smartass at him, whoops."

She . . . didn't actually sound sorry about that, though.

Lowering her voice a little bit, and peeling back the cover on the dish a couple of inches, Beau added, "Not gonna lie, it doesn't look, like, super awesome or anything. Plus I'm pretty sure it's not vegan."

So hey, you were safe from having to eat it at least, Karolina.

[[shh I'm totally not still awake right now really.]]

"He's one of the biggest heroes in my world," Karolina replied, leaning in for a peek at the dish - and instantly wrinkling her nose as she did, despite herself. "If not the biggest. Well, an older version of him, anyway."

That was the fun with Marvel timelines. She straightened up again, and shrugged.

"That version of him sent me and my friends to child protective services, and then eventually here. You know, when I was a kid."

She understood his reasons better these days. Guess that meant she'd grown up.

[ooc: GO TO SLEEP OMG.]

Beau opened her mouth and shut it again, blinking rapidly several times before she just said, "Oh. Yeah, uh . . . I can kinda see that, yeah." Because she could absolutely get how Mr. "it's a principle thing" would see that as a solution. She could also kind of get his reasoning if she tried, but --

"I'm guessing you all had no real choice in the matter?" Well, she was always going to have a pretty strong, pretty reflexive bad reaction to adults just going ahead and doing what they thought was best for kids.

Karolina shrugged, just a little bit. "We were the orphaned kids of a bunch of newly-discovered villains," she said, with just a touch of wryness. "And we were taking matters into our own hands and being heroes. The adults weren't really interested in our opinions."

Especially the adults that were also Avengers.

"For what it's worth, I don't think the Steve we have here would do it like that," she added. For one, he was barely older than Karolina was, and she thought that might help. "Or at least he wouldn't be as much of a dick about it."

You could tell she had feelings about it by the language.

Uh, yeah, because Beau's expression went from a very eloquent eyeroll (because ugh, of course, what the fuck, adults) to a wide-eyed look of surprise in a split second.

"Did you just --" Her surprise shifted into mischievous amusement, and she grinned. "That was kind of sexy."

Beauregard. BEHAVE.

"I guess that's something," she conceded, trying to be at least a little bit serious for a second. "And like . . . it means you ended up here, which is kind of a win for both of us in the long run?"

Aw, look, she was trying to look on the bright side for once. You were a terrible influence on her, Karolina.

"You think everything I do is sexy."

Well, just about. Karolina looked mighty amused about it, though.

Then she was back to some wryness. "But, yeah. I still don't appreciate how he did it, but... Fandom was good for me." A beat. "I mean, like you can probably tell from how I came back willingly a second time."

"The way he did it was bullshit," Beau replied, quickly and definitively because she also had feelings about that. She was smiling a little bit, though, because it kept turning out that they had some really, well, interesting things in common, and she kind of had to appreciate that. "I mean, I guess at least he had good intentions, and it worked out for you, but still. I hate it when adults totally disregard kids' thoughts and feelings, you know?"

She took a deep breath and made an almost visible effort at getting that train of thought under control before she got really worked up about it.

"I'm, uh. Really glad you did come back that second time. Obvious reasons. You know."

"I kind of guessed," Karolina admitted. Well, 'admitted', because her teasing little smirk spelled it out how little guessing she'd had to do. "You haven't exactly been very subtle about it."

Not even a bit.

"But I'm really glad too."

"What gave it away?" Beau teased, smirking right back at her. "Did I say something weird yesterday when the painkillers kicked in?"

She knew perfectly well that wasn't the case. As if she needed to be loopy on meds to be unsubtle about anything.

. . . which wasn't to say she hadn't said anything ridiculous when the painkillers kicked in.

Yeah.

"Well, not about that," Karolina teased, her voice trailing off at the end. At least until it dissolved into a quiet giggle, because she could only hold on to any serious teasing for so long.

"Was it something that can be repeated in present company?" Beau asked, amused, and also figuring it probably hadn't been.

She shifted the casserole dish from one hand to the other. "Man, this thing is getting heavy." With the weight of horror, probably. "I should, like, get it home or something."

Yeah, Karolina was just going to let that question go unanswered, because that was enough of an answer in itself, really.

"Oh, yeah, you should," she said instead, nodding very seriously. "And you should rest, anyway."

A beat.

"And maybe someone should supervise you."

"That totally depends on what you mean by supervise," Beau said, kind of relieved she hadn't wasted her drugged out comments on something boring.

"Well, making sure you actually do rest, first of all." Because she was really serious about the need for rest, okay. There was no escaping that, with her. Still, her lips tilted into more of a smirk. "But, if you're really good about the resting, then I might also consider doing something nice." A beat. "To you."

Sometimes the reckless needed to be bribed, she knew this from past experience. Usually her bribes just didn't come with implications like this one had, so Beau could consider herself special.

Beau sighed and rolled her eyes, but with an affectionate smile that shifted into a full on raised-eyebrows grin.

"So not fair that you know all my weak spots now," she complained in a tone that was not actually complaining at all. "But fine, I'll go back to bed for a while if you promise to keep me from getting too bored."

Karolina just smiled brightly at her, like she'd won something.

"Deal."

Beau's answering smirk seemed to indicate that she thought she'd won, too.

"Deal," she agreed, and leaned in to give Karolina a quick kiss on the cheek.
