Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sidon was very clearly the type to approve of collecting siblings! It was one of his favorite parts about the newbie picnic, other than just the general influx of new faces and new friends, and really just new everything, and how glad he felt that the whole vampire mess was cleared up before today, because that would have made this whole thing considerably more awkward!

As usual, he was glancing around, trying to determine which of the new students might be one that would be called Billy Batson, which he thought was an absolutely marvelous name, truly!, and grinned a little as he think he may have honed in on a potential candidate, confident he wouldn't be making the same mix up as last time around when he'd (very understandable, really!) gotten Mae mixed up as a potential Kat.

So please to not mind the very large and a little battle-scarred Zora approaching you right now, Billy, with a pure overflow of energy. "Hello, there!" he said, opening his arms in greeting. "Perhaps you can offer me some assistance! I am looking for a new student by the name of Billy Batson. I don't suppose," yes, he saw the nametag and ow grinned down at it, "that might be you?"

Billy looked up. And up, and up.

"Holy moly," he said half under his breath, and it wasn't even him putting on an innocent act. Even if he called down the lightning and transformed in front of this entire crowd (and he wasn't about to do that), this guy would still be way bigger than him.

"That's -- that's me," he said, raising one hand in a half-stunned wave. "Can I, uh, help you with something?"

Would Sidon ever get tired of that sort of reaction? Nope! Never! He beamed proudly, laughing a little, as he launched into even more of his delighted schpiel.

"Actually, Billy Batson," yes, by now Sidon had learned about surnames and how most people didn't just go by their full name at all times, but he just had to say that incredible name in its entirety one more time at least, "I was hoping that I might be able to help you with...well, everything! Allow me to introduce myself! I am Sidon!" Here, of course, he pumped his fist with as much gusto as every other time he'd done this introduction, flashing Billy his very best and brightest and somehow light-catching grin. "The Zora Prince! And also your Big Sibling for this wonderful establishment you see before you known as Fandom High! That means that it is my especial honor to be the one to provide you with as much guidance and assistance in getting settled in at your new school as you may need...or simply want, for that matter! I am here at your disposal, for whatever questions you may have! Surely, you must have at least a few itching around inside your brain?"

Even if all of them, understandably, were merely just about...him. He was a lot to take in even for the best of them.

The last time someone had kept calling him by his full name he'd ended up with superpowers so it really wasn't a bad association at all.

"You are really enthusiastic," said Billy, sounding about equal parts impressed and perplexed. "And this place is really big on being helpful, huh? That's the thing that's blowing my mind. And you're -- are you a shark person?"

No, he wasn't texting Freddy about this yet, but he could already predict that Freddy's response would be something along the lines of ASK HIM IF HE KNOWS AQUAMAN!

"Well," Sidon's grin turned a little bit away from just enthusiastic and bright to simply warm and (he hoped) assuring, "this place is to be your new home, at least for the time being, so of course we'd wish to be helpful in making this new home as comfortable as can be! And I'm afraid that, while I do understand many of my features do closely resemble the creatures known as sharks in this world, I am not, in actuality, a shark person. I am a Zora; we're an amphibious race that hail from a land called Hyrule, very, very far from this land, which is called Earth. You'll find there are many people from different worlds and races here, though the majority of the population do tend to lean toward what's called human."

He figured, not knowing exactly where Billy might be coming from, it wouldn't hurt to be as all-encompassing as possible.

"Oh." Billy shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other, eyes darting from side to side just for a second while he tried to figure out whether he'd really put his foot in it. But no, he didn't seem to be getting that impression from Sidon. If he was reading him correctly, which . . . he wasn't entirely sure about. But hey, benefit of the doubt!

"Sorry, I didn't mean to say anything dumb, I'm just from here. Earth, I mean. Or a version of Earth, anyway. The whole idea of other worlds is still -- I'm still getting used to that one." Sure, he kind of knew Superman a little bit now, but that somehow didn't make it any easier to grasp the concept. "But . . . that's really cool. And you're breathing okay out of the water, so I guess it wouldn't have made any sense for you to be a shark person."

He grinned crookedly. "Sorry. Again."

Sidon's smile in return was nothing but warm assurance. "Think nothing of it! After all, if I were breathing out of the water, surely that would simply be the person bit at work! There are surely much worse things to be called than a shark person, besides, so if it's just easier for you, I assure you, I do not mind. And the different worlds thing will get easier to grasp over time, nothing to worry about there, especially considering the veritable plethora of different worlds represented on this one little section of Earth. But you being from Earth may also help, as that'll make you a little more familiar with the general feel of this marvelous place. Wonderful! We're off to an incredible start, Billy Batson!"

...okay, no, he couldn't stop with the full name quite yet. It was just so good, and, to be fair, it took him a few weeks to get Norman Babcock out of his system, too.

It occurred to Billy that Sidon would have a field day with the rest of his siblings' names, too, and the thought entertained him enough that he was grinning as he replied, "Yeah, I don't have to do a whole lot of getting used to this time and place, at least. That saves you some work, and me some adjustment."

People deciding they were friends and then being affably talkative at him, he could roll with that now.

"Why, that's very excellent!" said Sidon, pumping his fist again with a laugh. "I should think I've barely got any job to do at all! Though, of course, if you have any questions, by all means, please do not hesitate to ask! Have you any that have surfaced so far? I know you've just arrived, so you've not had much time to really get your feet wet, as it were, but is there anything in particular you've been itching to ask so far?"

"I'm not sure I've even been here long enough to --" began Billy, but then he paused and shook his head. "Wait, I think I have one. The teacher who drove the bus here, the really scowly one. He's okay, right? He just looks kind of scary?"

Look, he had to be sure.

"Hmmmm," Sidon stroked his chin thoughtfully for a moment. "I'm afraid I don't know exactly who was the one to take a turn in driving the shuttle bus for this current group of new and incoming students, and, unfortunately, really scowly could refer to at least a few of the current members of our fine faculty. I may require a little more description."

Luckily, it was a singular enough outfit that Billy had no problem recalling what it looked like.

"Lots of black leather, this brown robe that looked kind of itchy, hair that's way too fabulous to be real?" he offered.

Oh, yes, that did the trick quite nicely.

"Oh, of course!" Sidon brightened. "That simply must have been Master Skywalker. Oh, yes, not to worry, Billy Batson, I can assure you that he is most certainly fine, and I would be willing to wager quite a good handful of rupees that a good part of it was all for show, just to keep the new students on their toes. He's rather fond of doing that; I've had him in many classes, most of them focused very intently on the art of diplomacy, and I've learned such a good deal from him. If I'm not mistaken, he is also the dean of students here at the school, though I'm not entirely sure exactly what such a title entails."

He laughed a little. "Maybe it is just scowling at the students. If so, he's absolutely marvelous at the job, isn't he?"

That was all Billy really needed to hear, and he exhaled a little sigh of relief.

"Okay. Okay. I guess he just likes to make a hell of a first impression, huh?" Which, hey. He could respect that.

Sidon had to laugh a little at that. "That sounds exactly like Master Skywalker, yes," he said. "I might recommend informing him that his efforts were most successful, but I would fear that such a compliment would only cause subsequent attempts to be even more filled with scowls and doubting new students."

"Yeah, no." Billy rubbed at the back of his neck for a second. "I think he's got that at exactly the right level right now."

Half under his breath he added, "Note to self, don't get caught by the dean of students."

. . . Not that he planned on doing anything bad, but.

"Most of the teachers here," Sidon offered, lowering his voice a little as he leaned forward in a nearly conspiratorial way, throwing out a wink for good measure, "act much meaner than they actually are. Generally, though, it goes well if you just let them think it's working."

Billy didn't really bother to smother his little snicker.

"Yeah, that's a pretty solid approach with a lot of adults who act that way," he had to agree.
