Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

So this week had been... less than great overall, but everyone in town was okay again (as okay as they ever were, at least) and now there were new people to welcome to the island! Thankfully, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for anyone who wanted to take part in some shirtless shenanigans, and the front lawn of the school was all set up for yet another tasty picnic. There were tables of blank name tags, lists of information, and enough food to probably feed two Fandoms. Time to be welcoming!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Sounds like something an old teacher of mine would have said, once," Kanan mused, smiling faintly. "Kanan Jarrus, I'm teaching a class on Taoism this semester."

You were teaching a class on Taoism and teddy bears this semester, Kanan.

"Always a field worth of study," Ender said, the corner of his mouth tugging up as he took a moment to observe Kanan. "Andrew Wiggin. I used to teach a more general philosophy here, in a sense. I'm here to do so again."

Yeah... Kanan did not exactly look like the very vision of Taoist philosophy. He and 'inner nature' weren't always on the best of terms.

"Goodness knows people around here can always use a little bit more philosophy," he noted. "The students we've got at the moment are generally a pretty thoughtful bunch, you should have a good run with this lot."

He considered Ender in turn.

"Actually," he added, "I was assigned to be teaching buddy to a Wiggin, this term. But if you're already familiar with the island, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't need the whole 'gremlins and weird rains' run-down."

"Not particularly, but I appreciate the willingness to try," Ender said wryly. "Ben and I are actually considering staying in a hotel off-island so the kids don't wake up as ponies over the weekend."

"But what if I want to be a pony?" Val asked.

Kanan turned a little grin toward Val at that.

"Being a pony is great right up until you want to pick something up to play with and you don't have hands," he offered.

He'd never been a pony, but he figured Loth-cat restrictions probably still applied here.

"I do like having hands," Val said, looking very thoughtful about it. "I need them for pancakes and ice cream."

She was, at times, her father's daughter.

"What made you decide to teach Taoism?" Ender asked.

Kanan cleared his throat at that question, a little awkwardly.

"The moose in the office handed me a book," he explained. "And I got to reading it, and... there were a few things about it that stuck, I suppose."

Not just the passages about honey.

But maybe also the honey, a little bit.

"There are some aspects to Taoist philosophies that are," he waved a hand around vaguely, "familiar. Similar, to a point, to ones I grew up with."

"It wouldn't happen to be a philosophy that involves swords made of plasma, would it?"

It was always worth checking.

Kanan paused a moment, not quite able to bite back a faint look of surprise on his face at that question.

Oh, Ender. You were good.

"It might be a philosophy that has something or other to do with plasma swords, as a matter of fact, yes."

It was simply an obvious question to ask, on this particular island. Even if the answer was 'no', the other party would probably know what you were getting at.

Ender nodded, mouth quirking further. "My partner is Dean Skywalker's grandson," he explained. "If Val here was a little older, I might have had to enroll her in your class."

So many Jedi. So many. Someday, Kanan would stop being surprised by that fact, but today was not that day.

"Well," he said, turning another little smile toward Val. "I doubt there's anything I can teach her that her great-grandfather can't do better. And probably with a dramatic shucking of a robe or something for added flair."

"It's the dramatic shucking I'm trying to avoid," Ender said dryly.

"Fair enough," Kanan replied with a little chuckle. "I suppose the dramatics don't play nicely with Tao philosophy, do they?"

But they were fun? Probably?

Kanan had never been much for dramatic flair, himself.

"I don't think much about Anakin Skywalker plays nicely with Tao philosophy," Ender said wryly. "Which is why it's always good to meet Force sensitives from your universe who've put some thought into their work."

"Well... I do my best with what I've got," Kanan replied, his own tone just as wry. "I'm not really the most..." He fumbled for a moment, looking for the right word for it. "... Experienced."

That was the kindest one he could append to himself, really.

"Had plenty to think about, though."

Another moment of silence, then.

"My universe... has definitely had its moments," he settled on. Which, incidentally, was also the kindest thing he could apply to it, right then. "But I'm here, now. So..."

Here, the island. Here, in general.

He was here to say he was here. That was a lot all on its own.

"Safe," Ender said, "To an extent."

It didn't sound like the GFFA was any safer in Kanan's time than in Ben's.

"To an extent," Kanan agreed. "I suppose 'safe' only goes so far when you go throwing yourself at whatever the danger of the week is even here, though."

He'd found the ferals to be horrifying and exciting by about equal measures, really.

Kanan's own smile was a touch wry.

"I could point out some of the people here at the picnic who were ravening half-vampires about three days ago," he offered.

So, yeah. It still never stuck.
