Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2019, Early Saturday Evening [Part 1]

Although there weren't as many sun-allergic people attending the graduation ceremony these days, traditions were meant to be upheld. As the sun went down, the finishing touches of decorations were made, and everything was finally ready. The lawn of the school had been lit up with blue and gold lights, and there were chairs set up for all of the graduates, along with plenty of seats for guests to come and watch. The weather was behaving itself, and it looked like it would be a nice, calm spring evening.

Congratulations, Class of 2019! Your big day is here!

Grab a seat, say hello to old friends, or make some new ones from among the guests.

A sundown graduation was perfect, actually, because it meant the likelihood of anyone noticing an extra bird hanging around went down to almost zero.

So there was nothing to notice about a raven perched very high up in one of the trees, minding its own business. Nothing at all. Unless you were sensitive to magic being used.

A fairly unlikely trio had grabbed seats in the front row; two men, and a girl too young to attend Fandom, but who was clearly INTO IT.

"DAAAAAAAAAAD LOOK. IT'S, LIKE A CASTLE. LIKE BEACON. HOW COME YANG GOT TO TRAIN AT A CASTLE AND I DIDN'T DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD?!?!?!"

"Because you're still too little, half-pint," Qrow drawled, messing up Ruby's hair. "You aren't tall enough to ride that ride yet, drink more milk."

"Qrow, don't encourage her. Ruby, we'll talk about it later, after you've graduated from Signal," Tai sighed, but he was grinning as he looked around for his other daughter. "--and worked on your hand-to-hand more. You're too reliant on Crescent Rose and don't start, Qrow."

"Fine, fine, be jealous you can't handle a scythe like us," Qrow laughed. "Right, kiddo?"

"Aw yeah!"

They... probably explained a LOT about Yang, actually.

Of course Sidon would be here to cheer on his friends as they graduated! And to think, next year, it would be him up there going through the whole pomp and circumstance! It was almost hard to believe! If he was this excited just to watch other people graduate, imagine how he'd feel when it was his turn!

He was also, naturally, going to be taking a seat toward the back, out of simple courtesy to all the other guests.

So, if Prompto really thought about it, this whole thing was a little surreal. He was actually going to a graduation for his school, because he actually knew people who were graduating and cared about them and one of them was even his girlfriend, which a little more than two years ago would have sounded like the most impossible thing in the whole world. In any world. Even that there were multiple worlds would have seemed impossible back then.

Total mind blow, bros.

But it was cool. It was super cool, and it also would give him a good idea what he'd be in for next year when he gratuated. And catching up on a lot of Zzzs since yesterday gave him way more energy than he knew what to do with...well, okay, he did know what to do with it, he was going to be bouncing around with his camera, getting pictures of everyone to commemorate the event, figuring out what might be the best spot for the procession and the speeches and everyone getting their diplomas, and, before everything got started, he could snag some candids, get a shot of the crowd, all the people visiting because of the graduates graduating, people who...

...were visiting...

...graduates....

Anyone paying close attention could probably pin-point the exact "Oh noooooooo" moment when Prompto realized exactly what that would mean. There was a pretty good chance some of these people here were...Yang's...family. And he would possibly maybe potentially probably have to...meet them.

Oh...

....nooooo.

He was not prepared for this.

But maybe he wouldn't have to? Maybe she, like, never even mentioned him? That would be fine, that would be totally fine, it would make sense, why would she mention him? 'Oh, hey, guys, so I have this super lame boyfriend, you'll totally see what I mean.' Oh, no, oh crap, oh shit oh geez, maybe he should have just stayed in bed? OHGODS.

Be cool, Prompto. Totally cool. Even if you wanted to just shrivel up and die inside, everything was cool, everything would be cool, you're just here to cheer on your friends and your girlfriend and take lots of pictures of everyone and it'll be fine, no need to panic, maybe they didn't even come, maybe it wouldn't even be a big deal, it was totally cool. Everything cool.

Cool cool cool.

Oh maaaan...

It was too bad from Prompto that Ruby was TOTALLY a ninja! Like, super-totally-sneaky!

Except for the whole not-sneaky at ALL. But, you know, if he was totally focused on, like, trying to figure out which Adults belonged to Yang, that gave her a +5 to sneak attack, right?

"Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey." Ruby, popping up in front of someone's camera and in their shot like that was weird-photo-bombing. "You're Yang's boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooyfriend."

Ruby. In these circumstances, it was more like a +10k.

And that was going to be a great photo, between the unexpected face in the shot and Prompto's finger still clicking it despite jumping about a mile out of his skin when that popped up. Great photo right there, to be sure.

"Ah!" Prompto nearly dropped the camera, but his nimble fingers, at least, didn't fail him, though thtere was a bit of juggling going on there. And his face instantly filling with red, and that was even before his brain sorted through all those extended vowels and latched onto what the girl had said.

Oh, well, this first impression was just going great, wasn't it? With no other options now except to either laugh it off or run away and find somewhere quiet to totally die, Prompto forced out a chuckle, tried to rub some of the red out of his face, and then went to rub the back of his neck. "Uhhhhhhh," he said, trying to remember exactly how words worked. "Guilty as charged, I...I guess. Um. Lemme...uh, lemme guess. You're probably Ruby, then, right?"

Little sister. That was cool. He could handle little sisters. She even looked a lot like Iris, just pretend you're talking to Iris, you talked to Iris all the time, no big deal.

"Wait, what? You know my name?!? That's so coooooool!" Ruby lit up like a hyperactive fourteen-year-old firecracker. "Like, she showed me SO many pictures of you and, like, blerg, made mushy kissy faces ew, but I didn't know she actually told her cool fighting-school buddies about ME!"

And just when Prompto thought his brain couldn't break any more, here was some kid all stoked because he knew her name and thought that was cool. Surreal didn't even seem to cover it anymore, really.

But it would have been impossible not to grin a little crookedly at all that, especially since it seemed like she barely even noticed that Prompto was pretty much a teal deer caught it headlights just about then, and he chuckled a little. "Well, I mean, sure, she's mentioned you. You're her awesome little sis. It's, uhh...nice to actually get to meet you, y'know? You guys...you guys, uh, all come out for this thing?"

Dad. There was gonna be a dad. Even though he was pretty sure even little Ruby here could totally kick his ass with one hand tied behind her back, especially if she was even remotely like Yang, he doubted she'd be traipsing off to Yang's graduation all by her lonesome.

He was so not ready for Dads.

Maybe if he just said he needed to go get more film for the camera and then just hit behind Sidon for the rest of the time...

Actually, Ruby's hand-to-hand was toooooooootally shitty, and she needed two hands to work Crescent Rose. So the best (worst?) she could ever do was flail at him and be Ruby.

"OH MY GOSH YOU HAVEN'T MET DAD!" Ruby immediately went up on her tiptoes to look around. "Uhhhh... oh! He's the one over there, that looks like Yang but even taller and a guy! And the guy he's talking to is our Uncle Qrow!"

Ruby, you were not helping here!!

Barely managing to keep down a groan and not wincing too much, Prompto worried followed Ruby's eyes around but, really, he didn't have too much trouble. "I don't know," he said. "They look like kind of busy." You know, super busy just being there and talking to each other, totally super way, way busy. "I'm sure it could wait for a better time."

When he'd had time to maybe properly get some freak-out about it out of his system. And with Yang there as a buffer.

Although Yang could also just make it worse.

There was no good option here, but at least if it was just Ruby, he felt he could handle it. He could handle little sisters; he practically had one himself. Meeting a girlfriend's dad was something he'd never done before, though, and he was pretty sure it was the single most terrifying thing he had and will ever encounter. Just throw him to the daemons now. At least with daemons he might stand a fraction of a chance at survival.

"Yeah, Yang probably wants to be there since I don't think she's told dad yet. I mean, she told me about the co-ed floors and rooms but not dad, 'cause he'd flip out, but I told Qrow, so, I think he knows by now but he probably wasn't thrilled, but you're not, like, her ROOMMATE, right???? That's Breq who seems really cool, that, like, she can deal with Yang. It's not like you're having sleepovers, 'cause you're not roommates!"

Sorry, Prompto. Ruby is... a very innocent fourteen. The concept of romance still has cooties and is very vague.

"Not, like, he's gonna be mad that she's got a boyfriend! Just that he makes this face--" Ruby scrunched up her nose. "--and goes 'Yaaaaaaaaaaaang' every time she's been leaving out mission-critical information."

"Qrow's just gonna cheer you on to rile dad up. He's weird. But awesome."

"Breq is really cool," Prompto assured Ruby, because, really, that was the only thing in all of that that seemed even remotely close to anything he'd want to go near touching right now.

Was it a better thing for him if Yang's dad didn't even know? Or would that make it worse? He was pretty sure the uncle situation would not helping, though. His leg started bouncing a little, head bobbing, some fidgets settling in as he tried to make a strategy for an unexpected battle in very, very unfamiliar territory. He started chewing his thumbnail a little until he realized he was doing it, then promtply dropped his hand.

"But, yeah," he seemed to finally make at least some conclusion worthy of being spoken outloud, "probably best to let her lead the charge on that one..."

...or....should he go and introduce himself? Take the initiative? People were impressed by that, right?

Yeah, okay, sure, Prompto, 'hello, sir, I'm the dude your daughter's dating that you probably don't even know about.' That'll go just greeaaaat.

"Too bad," he found a faint smirk, "she's kind of busy at the moment, huh?"

"I CAN FIX THAT." Ruby whipped out her scroll and yelled "YANG!" and it and it immediately auto-connected.

Yang's scroll was buzzing. She fished it out of a pocket in her robes only to have Ruby's face pop up in livestream.

"YangIfoundyourboyfriendhe'ssonicecanItakehimtomeetdadandUncleQrowpleeeeeeeeeeeease?"

"WHAT?" Yang craned her neck to try and see them in the crowds outside the grad area. "Oh gods, Ruby, leave Prompto alone. Sorry about her, babe, guess dad forgot to leash her."

"HEY."

"Hey yourself, sis. Quit picking on my boyfriend!"

Sorry, Prompto, siblings gotta fight.

Although he felt the need to point out that no one was picking on him, Prompto honestly thought the sibling thing was great, and could they be any cuter right now?

Actually, yes, they could, because this adorable sisters things could be going on with something that had less to do with his impending doom.

"No, it's alright," he said. "She hasn't been too bad."

Hey, Prompto had bros, too; he just wasn't related to them.

"You look really great, by the way, Yang."

Yes, he had to sneak that in, shut up.
