Today, the class would find the Danger Shop simulation set right back up in the middle of town.

"Well done," he said, grinning around at the students. "You defeated the demon, you've helped clear out the cave for the wyrmling with the tattered wing, and to top it off, now he's got some kobold roommates to help him out while his wing heals. As thanks, he let you each take a handful from his hoard."

Mmmmriches.

"And the Captain of the Guard still owes you payment for checking out the wyrmling situation, so once you catch up to her, it'll be a couple hundred gold in each of your pockets. Not half bad."

... Fjord wished he had a couple hundred gold in his pockets.

"Now you've got yourselves a bit of a reputation around here, the people who take care of problems." A glance at Jatila. "Who mostly take care of problems. Which means opportunities are starting to open up here in town. People want to give you work, if you're willing to take it. There's one in particular that seems promising- a ship's captain from a neighboring city is in port, and he's looking for some good, strong individuals to see to it that his ship and his cargo arrive safely at their destination. He's offering living quarters, food, and a solid wage to anybody who cares to join his crew. Go have a chat with him if you're interested, or make your own fun."

Right, right. Apparently she was supposed to be -- gulp -- the face of the party now? So maybe she should act like it since that was kind of what Keyleth was supposed to be learning more about anyway?

Oh boy.

Yelden took a deep breath, straightened her armor out a bit, and walked over toward the guard captain, trying to look serious and capable but maybe kind of approachable and not too intimidating at the same time.

"Is there --" A little bit high-pitched, so she cleared her throat and started over. "Is there anything else we can do to help you out? I hope the wyrmling situation has been resolved well enough, but if there's any additional cleanup that needs to be done I'd hate to leave that hanging. And I'm, uh . . . sorry about our rogue. Really."

Jatila gave her a haughty look. "Without me, you wouldn't even know what needed to be done."

Who'd gotten ~~you into this~~ the job from the captain in the first place?

"We might have been able to get the job done with a lot less collateral damage if you hadn't pushed for leaving the kobolds at the mercy of the gnolls," Yelden shot back, never mind that she could have done more to stand up to Jatila in the first place.

"It solved the problem," Jatila said.

"It solved one problem," Yelden answered, and the slightly firmer and more assertive tone suggested that Keyleth might be finding her spine here. "It left us with another one, though. We can't just . . . go around causing problems for some people in the name of trying to help others."

Welcome to what was going to be a recurring theme for her for years.

Personally, Lana wanted to cheer.

Jatila just rolled her eyes. "We were only hired to solve the problems for one group."

"Rogues happen," The Captain sighed, looking askance at Jatila again. "The important thing is that people can rest easily again knowing that the dragon isn't coming for them."

Thank the gods.

"Though, now that you mention it," she added, "we could use some strong hands to assist with a few repairs, if you're planning on being in town for a while longer before moving along."

"Well, I can't speak for everyone --" have another askance look, Jatila -- "but I'd be glad to help you out with that before we go, and some of the others might, too."

Which meant she'd have to maybe talk them into it, which . . . again, might as well practice.

The Captain nodded, looking faintly grateful, now.

"I'm afraid I don't have much gold left with which to pay you for your work," she noted apologetically, even while she unclipped a small pouch of coin from her belt and held it out to her. "Everything we had to spare went into your pay for the wyrmling job."

"No, please." Yelden held her hands out, palms forward. "You've given us enough, and it's the least we can do since some of the mess is on us in the first place."

So there, Jatila.

Well, that was... interesting. The Captain tilted her head curiously at Yelden, considering that.

And then just came right out and asked, "Is on you?"

. . . whoops.

"We . . ." Yelden had to stop and take a breath to stave off an embarrassing squeak in her voice. "We could have handled this better, I'll say that up front. And I feel responsible for it, so I'd like to do what I can."

Oh hey, a persuasion check of 16!

The Captain considered that for a moment, and then nodded, apparently satisfied with that reply.

"Well, all's well that ends well, and all," she settled on dismissively. "The wyrmling is happy, we're happy. Nobody's getting eaten today, and we have you lot to thank for it."

Even if it was kinda your rogue's fault.

"I'm just glad we were able to offer some help," Yelden said in an earnest tone, although the slight frown on her face suggested that she was all too aware it was kind of Jatila's fault. Also that she blamed herself for not trying to rein that in sooner.

"Believe me, so are we," the Captain replied easily. "So, have you any idea where you and your crew is headed from here?"

"I'm not sure yet," admitted Yelden, scratching idly behind her right ear. "Looks like we may be heading out onto the ocean? Maybe. It's kind of hard to get all of us onto the same page sometimes."

"Hm." The Captain frowned thoughtfully at that, glancing over toward the man knocking down drinks by the bar with his crew. "Well, you certainly wouldn't be left wanting for something to do if you took a job with that lot. That one there seems to know exactly how to put his nose in it. Every time."
