A New You, Tuesday, Period Two

Today, the class would find the Danger Shop simulation set right back up in the middle of town.

"Well done," he said, grinning around at the students. "You defeated the demon, you've helped clear out the cave for the wyrmling with the tattered wing, and to top it off, now he's got some kobold roommates to help him out while his wing heals. As thanks, he let you each take a handful from his hoard."

Mmmmriches.

"And the Captain of the Guard still owes you payment for checking out the wyrmling situation, so once you catch up to her, it'll be a couple hundred gold in each of your pockets. Not half bad."

... Fjord wished he had a couple hundred gold in his pockets.

"Now you've got yourselves a bit of a reputation around here, the people who take care of problems." A glance at Jatila. "Who mostly take care of problems. Which means opportunities are starting to open up here in town. People want to give you work, if you're willing to take it. There's one in particular that seems promising- a ship's captain from a neighboring city is in port, and he's looking for some good, strong individuals to see to it that his ship and his cargo arrive safely at their destination. He's offering living quarters, food, and a solid wage to anybody who cares to join his crew. Go have a chat with him if you're interested, or make your own fun."

There was another snort, and then the Captain was reaching for a pouch at her belt. One of several, pre-counted sums of gold. She deftly plucked it up and tossed it at him.

... In a gentle underhand. Tempted though she was to bounce it off his head.

"Two-hundred gold. I trust you'll find it all in order."

A gentle underhanded toss that Seros was apparently not remotely dexterous enough for, because, though he tried to catch it and even managed to bounce it a little in his hands in the effort to keep it from falling, still fell to the ground with a (admittedly very satisfyingly heavy) jingle of coins. "Whoops," he said, chuckling and wondering if the disguise feature in the Danger Shop was turning his face as red as Seros as he knew it was as Prompto, before he swept down oh-so-dramatically (swirling all the robes) to pick it back up and remarked confidently, arrogantly, "I did that on purpose."

But before anyone could have the chance to argue, he turned (more flourishing robes; not enough flourishing; his new robes were going to have to have extra flourish), he tucked away the coins and moseyed his way on over to the other Captain and announced, "I have heard that perhaps you might be looking for a few good hands on your ship, my good sir. I'll admit, while I am lacking in particular strength," this, he felt, was very important to include as part of his This-Character-Is-Clearly-NOT-Prompto developement, because obviously, with those guns... "I am quite perceptive and a very good hand at magic, as you may have heard. I have a strong feeling that my companions will also be interested in helping as needed, but, if that is not the case, I assure you, I can deign to provide at the very least my own excellent services."

Seros's very un-Prompto-like confidence, apparently, was just inspired by him thinking about all the stupid dramatic shit he said to Nina half the time.

The Captain looked up at Seros, regarding him with almost luminous, cobalt-blue eyes. A small smirk played at his lips as he raised his drink and took a long pull from it.

"We might have a use for a man of your particular talents," he mused, speech coming out in a lazy sort of brogue. "Let me ask you now, have you got any experience with pirates, mate?"

If Prompto remembered correctly (which it was possibly he didn't quite), Seros had done the whole 'enclave of sorcerers' thing before the whole 'everyone was actually a jerk and stabbed in the back, but thankfully not literally' thing, so...probably not. But he wasn't about to let this guy think he was a total newb. Pretending he was more knowledgeable than he was, though, could lead to getting his head way under water.

So he gave a light shrug with a lofty, "Marginal. I mean, is there really all that much to know?"

Oh. Oh,Seros.

Or Prompto.

Hard to tell with that one.

The Captain gave an amused snort at that.

"I wanna say," he mused, "that knowing how not to get killed by them would be on that list. Ever fire a canon before?"

Don't get killed by pirates. He could handle that!

...he hoped.

"No!" Seros's face broke out into a grin that was filled with far too much enthusiasm and excitement, because Prompto was really bad at this. "But I can learn!"

He cleared his throat, remembering to regain at least some modicum of dignity.

"I think you'll find," he drawled importantly, "that I am a very quick learner."

At something like a cannon? Hellz yeah, he would be!

Well. Prompto would be.

Seros...they'll just have to find out.

And, once again, another amused look. The Captain nodded a little, and then almost irreverently held out a blue hand, webbed fingers and all, for Seros to shake.

"Quick learners are what we're in the market for," he decided. "And if you don't learn quick, we've got a swift way to take care of drains on our ship's resources, too."

Was he not elaborating on that? Oops.

And Seros was about halfway through accepting that handshake with gusto before remembering about that whole not-trusting-people thing, so he threw in a little narrow-eyed suspicion at the end. And then oh-so-subtly wiped his hand on his robe afterwards.

Because Prompto didn't have any issue with people with amphibious features (obviously), so that meant Seros would. And he was a total asshole, besides.

"Let me guess," he said, as he drew up on the asshole thing a little bit more and moved his head that would have tossed his hair if it weren't for the hood of his robes, "that swift way involves a swift trip right over the side of the ship?"

The Captain seemed used to that sort of thing, or, at least, well beyond giving a damn about it, and so he just gave and amused, almost good-natured snort before shaking his head.

"Oh, no. No, that's such a pirate thing to do," he almost laughed. "We just feed 'em to our cargo. Way less wasteful."

Was he joking? Was he serious? Who knew!

"....what kind of cargo are you guys carrying?" Seros asked, feeling like this should have maybe been a before hand-shake question.

But, hey! He didn't have to remember to pretend to be suspicious or untrustworthy this time, like, at all!

"Dunno," the sea captain replied, giving Seros a broad grin. "Money's good enough I don't ask questions. We keep the thing fed, we give it to our buyer on the other side, job's done, we take another."

"Well," Seros ventured, "what do you feed him, then?"

Context could be a very important clue, after all.

"And....uhhh...what kind of money's in it for us...for...y'kow...helping."

Again. Seros. Sweetie. Before hand-shake questions.

But, hey, he was learning! Classes were for learning, right?

"Ain't no tellin' the thing's a him," the captain rattled off, clearly enjoying this now. "Or a her. It's an it, unless it has kittens in my cargo hold or something, and I suggest you don't get attached enough to let it be anything besides."

He smirked.

"It'll do a hell of a number on anything goes into that crate, though."

Which was not actually an answer to that question. Not even a little bit.

"But you will get room and board and a decent living wage, and when your contract's up we'll drop you off anywhere along our route you want to be."

Was it weird to be both terrified and thirlled? Because that all sounded really thrilling...but also suuuuper terrifying.

Which was, really, a very Prompto response, so, despite the fact that he kind of wanted to rub his hands together in excitement, he forced that down and pulled up more of Seros's lofty daemon-may-care attitude.

"I suppose those terms sound...acceptable," he noted with an exaggerated shrug, stroking his chin a little thoughtfully. "Naturally, I shall have to converse with my compatriots, but I'm certain they'll also be on board."

Heh.

On board.

Because it was a ship.

Get it?

...Seros hated you, Prompto.

The captain, for his part, gave a little snort. Was he really letting this guy on his ship?

Apparently yes. Yes he was.

"Well, that's only sensible, he said, in a tone of voice that suggested that 'sensible' was about as exciting as 'watching kelp grow.' "I'll leave you to chat with the rest of your group, of course. If your party wants to come along and we're not here, ask around the docks for a ship by the name of Joyswimmer's Dance."
