BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning

"Portalocity lounge," Mae read aloud, and heaved a sigh of relief. "Finally. First time I ever travel alone and I get lost in the stupid airport." She walked into the lounge, looked around, and hopped up onto the bench, her duffel bag tucked under her feet. There was plenty of room, since her legs were too short to reach the ground. "Of course, it's bigger than, like, all of Possum Springs put together, so I guess that can't be too surprising. Good thing Mom and Dad insisted I take the early bus."

She tapped her heels on her duffel bag and eyed the door. "And now I'm talking to myself. Good job, Mae. Perfect first impression." She made her eyes comically wide and waved to an imaginary audience. "HeY, I'M mAe, i'M TOtallY NOrmAl, niCE To MEeT yoU." She frowned and tapped her feet harder. "Good job, Killer."

Another glance around the lounge. There wasn't a lot to look at yet.

"I wish I had a video game."

"Vehicle, general annoyance, and decoration," Kanan rattled off, gesturing to each item in kind. "Only the first one was something I was expecting to bring here today. The rest was a bit of a surprise."

Festive, at least, right?

"Vehicle," Trevor repeated slowly. Because it looked like some Dracula shit if he really looked at it.

Oh, wacky future tech Dracula.

"It's a box with wheels under it," Kanan replied, shrugging. "Gets us from point A to point B with minimal fuss, but a bit of bouncing around along the way."

Because school buses didn't do seatbelts.

"Not familiar with those, huh?"

"Carts, sure." If he was expected to push this, he was out. So take that, weird hallucination from bad beer guy!

And see, now Kanan was just picturing a hovercart. And that just came with horrible acid flashbacks.

... Literal acid. A tidal wave of it, across the floor below.

"It's a bit like a cart," Kanan settled on, for simplicity's sake. "Moves on its own and I even usually manage to keep all four wheels on the ground."

He missed Okadiah's shitty hoverbus.

Just jump over it to the precarious, but evenly spaced platforms, Kanan. God.

Trevor looked at the bus and then back at Kanan then back at the bus before sighing. "Better than staying here, I guess."

"Yeah, there are worse things than a short drive to a waiting picnic," Kanan assured him. "Airport food probably isn't that great, anyway."

Stupidly overpriced. And nobody wanted to spend more time in here around this time of year than was strictly necessary.

Just gonna ignore the 'airport' thing. Yeeeep.

"Picnic?" Look, you got a student who wasn't expecting to go to a school. God help their big sibling.

Oh, hey. Kanan knew this type pretty well.

He'd been one, after all.

"You have no idea where you're at right now, do you?"

Call it a hunch.

"I'm honestly assuming I ate something rotten and this is a fever dream," he admitted pretty calmly.

"Fair enough. My sympathies for the hangover to follow."

Because it would more or less involve that unfortunate realization that it probably wasn't just something he ate.

DON'T TAKE THAT DELUSION FROM HIM.

"Could be worse."

He wasn't dead, so there was that.

"Can always be worse," Kanan agreed. "At least this way you get a picnic."

Before they chased him off or the church showed up, free food would be amazing.

"I'll take your word on it," he said, hauling himself onto the bus all while making a face at the garishness.

At least Kanan felt faintly justified by the faces people were making at the decorations.

Even if most of them were assuming this meant he was driving the stripper bus.

"Welcome to Fandom," he replied, smiling crookedly. "Mind the glitter."

So, so much glitter.
