Library is Open, 3/28

Zero opened up the library and took up a place behind the desk. She's in a very good mood this morning for some reason.

((OOC: I have to go AFK for a while, so Zero may be nonresponsive. Hopefully some other aides will be along to help you.))

"Hey, Liz. How are you? I don't think I've seen you around for a while." Parker holds up her Russian book. "Can you make sense of this? I think the writer's on gremlin crack."

"I'm fine," Elizabeth said, although she looked pretty tired. "How's you?"

She took the offered book and glanced down at it. "I can make some sense of it, yes," she grinned slightly.

"I'm... good." Parker's smile is a little brighter than normal, but then she makes a face. "Any insight into the difference between his use of the language, and Pasternak? Because frankly I'm flailing." She made a face at her grammar, then carefully said in Russian, "//I do not love Chekov. He can keep his goat-kissing cherry tree.//"

Elizabeth grinned, and offered a couple of helpful so handwavey suggestions to Parker in English, before switching to Russian. "//I don't recall a goat-kissing cherry tree in any of his works, but it has been a while since I've read him. Personally, I prefer Pushkin//"

"//I will try him, then.// This has been the longest semester ever. Next Fall? Three classes, no independent studies. I already have enough credits to graduate anyway." Parker sighed, then studied Elizabeth. "You actually look like I feel, some days." She frowned. "Are you still having nightmares?"

Elizabeth sighed. "Slept badly last night. Charlie and I had... well. Not a fight. A discussion. A not very pleasant one."

"Oh, man. I'm sorry." She cocked her head, and bit her lower lip. "Colorado stuff, or relationship stuff? Or neither?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Both really. Relationship stuff linked back to Colorado," Elizabeth replied. "We've been avoiding each other since the beginning of term."

Parker shook her head. "Is there anything I can do? I'll listen, if it'll help, when we're not somewhere public. And I had no idea-- people come and go around here so much, I didn't notice you guys weren't around each other."

"Thanks, Parker," Elizabeth gave her a small smile. "I might take you up on that. And if it all goes south, then I'll be looking for people to drink with!"

"Hey, you know me. Always up for a bitch session with good alcohol." Parker grinned. "Pushkin, hunh?"

"You'll be first on my list," Elizabeth promised. "Yeah, most of his work loses something in the translations to English, so a lot of his verse isn't really known to English readers. I've got a couple of his books if you wanted to borrow one or two. His book of Fairy Tales is probably a good thing to start you off on."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker's smile widened. "I love fairy tales. Although the Hans Christian Anderson ones tend to be soppy, I've noticed."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"These are slightly different to the Hans Christian Anderson ones," Elizabeth said. "To start with, they're in verse."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker cocked her head. "I have a mixed history with verse. Shakespeare... I blame Shakespeare for many things." She grinned.

"At least Pushkin's is understandable. Well, if you speak Russian obviously."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's something. I just wish my accent didn't limp along screaming, 'hi, American who's studied too many Romance languages, can not make tongue do this' as much as it does." Parker made a face, then looked thoughtful. "Have you been to Russia?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-03-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth laughed slightly. "Give it time and it'll come," she said confidently. "I've spent some time there, yeah. I did the touristy thing after I," she paused and automatically checked the area. "Graduated from high school. And I've been back a couple of times with work."

"I might be going to Moscow, for part of next year, after I graduate. Depends on my grades and what my father is doing." Parker made a face. "Thus, Russian. A language of pessimists and verbally double-jointed obsessives."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-03-29 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
"I quite liked Moscow. There's lots to see there, although try and get out of the city to see some more of the conversation," Elizabeth said. "It's a beautiful language and the most widely used Slavic one."
