“Okay, so this week we’re working on something nice and non-traumatic," Miguel said, scowling. Someone's brother had been trying to get them to talk all weekend. "We're moving away from electronics and into plastics,” Miguel said. “I think. Anyway, we’re doing this.” He played a bit of the movie for today’s inspiration. “Don’t worry about potential questions of sentience, just work on making something really bouncy.” He keyed up a chemistry lab, already filled with various different plastics and compounds. “And don’t forget goggles and gloves, and try not to blow anything up, okay?”

He was kind of looking forward to this one himself. It'd been a long time since he'd just messed with chemicals.

"Let's get to it!"

Goggles and gloves, sure. Try not to blow anything up, seemed easy enough. And once she got past the vivid visions in her mind of her mother turning their kitchen into a laboratory, bent over, feverishly mixing DMSO with oleander, poisonous paints liberally applied to doorknobs, she could actually find that it was a little bit fun, seeing what combinations lead to certain viscosity and properties, trying to adjust to get to the right mix for bounciness, like blending colors to get just the right shade of darkness for the small bit of shadow hiding out in a room filled with light...

"Just wait until I figure out how to change the colors, maybe." Was that actually a faint smile on Astrid's face? It actually could have been, imagine that. "There could still be pinwheels yet. Or, at least the impression of one."
