Practical Ethics, Tuesday, Period 3

Everyone ready to read today? Good. Anakin has handouts. "This is a famous story from this planet called The Lady or the Tiger," he began. "Hopefully Dr. Aphra read it over the week like I told her to."

She was capable of doing assigned reading, Anakin. "Yeah, yeah, psycho royalty feeds people to overgrown tookas."

"Maybe feeding people to overgrown tookas," Anakin said. "The ending is ambiguous, and that's what our discussion today will be about: what do you think the princess advised her lover--the door with the beautiful woman behind it, or the one with the tiger so he could get eaten? And which would you choose, if you were in the same position?"

"It's pretty obvious, you don't build a whole tooka deathtrap, then let the guy go." Aphra had opinions, apparently. "There's some truly psychotic levels of jealousy involved here."

"Well, you could," Anakin said. "Otherwise it would just be people-eating day. There has to be at least the appearance of getting to live."

"Yeah, 'the appearance', not the reality." Yes, Aphra was using finger-quotes. You had great teachers.

You were so lucky, it was true. "So. Do you think it's people-eating day, or did her lover get lucky?"

"Well," said Sidon, after a moment of frowning as he mulled it over, "I can certainly not assume on the motives, thoughts, and feelings of another person, even if that person should be fictional, so I cannot even begin to speculate on which choice the woman in the story would have made. I can only speak for myself," hand to his heart, slight bow of his head to emphasize the humbleness of such an opinion, "and were I in such a terrible, nearly impossible conundrum, I would much rather have my love be a live and well though with another person than to have them meet a horrible fate not of their choosing at the hands of a terrible beast."

Surprising no one.

"Though I do wonder," he had to add, "if she could not have done something more to try to convince her father of such barbarism and perhaps gather a force to stand up to him and stop this rather insane and barbaric perception of justice."

Because, yeah, it was totally that easy.

"I think he should have gotten the lady but probably got the tiger because everyone in this story is terrible," Sabine reasoned.

"Of course. If I care about someone- and probably even if I didn't- I'd rather they be alive somewhere than eaten by an animal for entertainment."

She hated everyone in that story.

"As someone who's spent time in an arena where I was supposed to be eaten by an animal for entertainment, thank you," Anakin said.

He frowned. "My life is strange."

"Another vote for everyone in this story is terrible." Sure, Theron would like to believe people were better than that, but here they clearly weren't.

"A lot of time, people are terrible," Anakin said. "It's one of the more depressing parts of growing older, that realization."

Theron snorted. "I was born in the middle of a war that only 'ended' when the other side attacked during peace talks," he said. "I don't need to get older to realise some people are utter sleemos."

"Yeah. As someone who's been called 'hot-tempered' more than once, I'm having some issues with the word 'barbaric' getting tossed around everywhere in regards to every emotion," Yang said dryly.

"If she was smart, he got the lady, because dad can be deposed and she'll grant him a divorce. But we don't know how smart she was, because the story doesn't tell us anything besides the writer thinking they're better than everyone else."
