Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I have no idea what those are, either," Lana said, frustrated. "Damn. So it's entirely possible you're from far into the future or past of the same galaxy?"

That was...so odd.

"Seems like. You get used to that kind of thing being possible, though this is a personal first for me," Sabine admitted.

"I hadn't been warned about that possibility," Lana confessed. "What else have I likely not been warned about?" It was half question and half rhetorical.

Sabine thought about it, and she was answering whether it was rhetorical or not. "Uh, for a few days the adults turned into teenagers. Also, gremlins. Radio squirrels..."

"None of that makes any sense," Lana said. "Well, that first one I at least understand the words of, if not the why and how. What about the others?"

"I'm not sure there is a why or how to a lot of this stuff," Sabine admitted. "Gremlins are these little green things that live around here, and if they bite you you'll hallucinate that you're someone else. It wears off in a little while, and you're fine, just probably embarrassed."

"Maybe leaving armor on is a good decision," Lana said. "And 'radio squirrels'?"

"Our local news is people reading notes provided by squirrels who are taking notes on us," she said, and shrugged. "I know."

"What are squirrels and what do they take notes on?" Lana asked, frowning.

"Little furry guys with bushy tails. They report what we talk about and where we go. They seem harmless, and people seem sort of fine about it."

Sabine was never going to be fine about it, but she could get around them when she wanted so she'd deal.

Yeah, Lana wasn't sure she was fine about it, either, and her frown showed as much. "They report on everything?"

"Well, they can," Sabine said slowly. "I know there are days I'm definitely around existing and doing things but ~~didn't play that day~~ I don't hear my name on it. But they're around here, and someone will talk about what we all did at the picnic."

Lana sighed. "And here I was looking forward to a little privacy."

"It could be worse. The dorms are pretty quiet, and you can always find spots if you want to be alone."

She'd share the rum trick when she was sure Lana wasn't going to be an issue. She didn't trust that easily.

"That's good to know, anyway." Lana would do what she had to. Maybe these squirrels could be reasoned with. Or mind-clouded. She would see.

"So I take it the Empire and Mandalore are still on good terms, or already on good terms, whenever you're from?" she asked. "I had just assumed, but if you're not even from the same time, I probably shouldn't have." She would have to watch that.

"That's... complicated." Especially more complicated if you were Sabine. "You have the Empire when you're from? After a treaty?"

"We had it before the treaty, too." Lana shook her head. "Sorry, this is very strange."

She thought for a moment, trying to pare it down to just the question asked, rather than an entire history. "The Empire and Mandalore were allied during the Great War. The treaty between the Empire and Republic ended that war. The Mandalorians maintain a presence in Kaas City, our capital, and some of them still work for or alongside various Lords."

"Oh, my head hurts," Sabine said, frowning as she worked that through. Some of the names of things were just familiar enough to keep things confusing, and other things just didn't fit. "When you say Mandalorians work alongside Lords, what do you mean?"

"Well, if the Sith in your time are anything like the Sith in mine," Lana said wryly, "you must be aware the Lords fight each other as often as not. The ones who don't do it via politics often hire mercenaries, and Mandalorians are the best."

"That last part sounds right," Sabine said, because she was a snob like that. But she also had to admit, "We don't really have Sith around in my time. At least, not like that. Our Empire is the Galactic Empire. Led by Emperor Palpatine?"

She actually acted like saying "our Empire" didn't gross her out.

Lana shook her head. "I've never heard of it or him. Ours is the Sith Empire, led by the Dark Council under the Sith Emperor. His name would be Darth Vitiate, I suppose, although he's been only 'The Emperor' for at least as long as I've been alive."

"This is so weird," Sabine said, shaking her head. "I've never heard of that happening even in the past where I'm from."

It was possible it was just so long ago that it didn't get brought up anymore.

"Perhaps I'm from your future, then?" Lana suggested. "Only I've never heard of your Clone Wars, either."

There was far too much unknown history in their galaxy.

"Alternate realities are a possibility, too. Otherwise there might be so much time between us it doesn't really matter except when we trip over terms in conversation."

Also Sabine wasn't sure she liked the thought of a Sith Empire in the future.

"I'll have to keep that in mind," Lana said, nodding in agreement. "Hopefully it won't happen too often."
