Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nell got to her feet quickly, not because she was afraid, but because it was the right thing to do. She quickly averted her eyes from the other girl's uncovered skin, trying to keep her focus just on her face.

"It is a bit hard to take in everything," she admitted. "There's just... so much. And I know in my heart I'm supposed to be home fixing dinner for my husband. I don't expect he's ever put together a meal for himself in his life. But I'm here and not likely to get back anytime soon it seems, so... I'm trying to adjust."

Nell, bit her lip. "Doesn't it make you feel uncomfortable to be showing so much skin? Aren't you afraid the menfolk will... get inflamed?"

Yang kinda... blinked. Husband? Skin? Menfolk? Inflamed????

Something behind Yang's eyes hardened, and they shifted from her normal lilac to red, then back to violet again. "Kiddo, no one with two brain cells is going to try anything with me," she promised, "--and if they try something with you, I want you to come get me right away. Kick 'em where it counts and run for it."

"We don't allow that kinda stuff around here, okay?"

Nell watched the change in the other girl's eyes and understood just what it meant. She nodded. "It's good to know this isn't that kind of place. I'm not sure I'd ever be comfortable being as exposed as you are, but it's good to know you can do it."

"And you absolutely do not have to dress like me -- or anyone else -- if you don't want to," Yang said immediately. "You do what makes you comfortable, okay? My little sister loves the fluffiest dresses she can find, and that's fine too, even if I don't understand how she doesn't rip her petticoat every five seconds because she's such a klutz."

Sorry, Nell, you just got informally adopted by a very overprotective Yang.

"I'm Yang, by the way. What's your name?"

Nell looked down at her own long plain skirt and stockings. "I'm not exactly the frilly type myself," she said. "But I get the feeling none of you-uns would mind if I wore overalls instead dressing like this. I'd like that."

She smiled at the other girl. "Nice to meet you, Yang. I'm Nell. Nell Ingram."

"Oh, so you're Nell. Sidon mentioned you earlier."

"Well, I'm going to guess that since you didn't expect to be here, so you don't have any of your stuff with you," Yang said, giving her a grin. "I've got extra pajamas you can borrow for now, and I'm happy to take you shopping to get some overalls or something else you like, while the school figures out how to get you set-up. What room are you in?"

Nell just stared at her for a moment, then put her hands up to cover her eyes. It took her a few seconds to collect herself to be able to speak without her voice breaking too much. "You... you'd do all that for me?"

"Well, yeah," Yang said easily. "If my sister ended up somewhere unexpectedly, I'd hope someone would help her out. It's just the right thing to do."

Really, Yang was gonna punch someone, if she ever found out who made Nell so sad like this.

"Do...do you need a hug?"

Nell managed to pull herself together. "I've been wonderin' what I'd do about clothes and such, seeing as I just came here with nothing 'cept what's on my back. But I never imagined someone would just offer to help like that. It's most kind of you." Nell wasn't all that used to people just being kind.

"I don't know if I'm much of a hugger, but I think I'd like to give it a try."

"Lucky for you, I have it on good authority that I give great hugs," Yang informed her, stepping forward to (carefully!) wrap Nell in a hug.

It helped that Yang was tall, *could* use her strength to pick you up easily or just keep you safe, and had nice-smelling, soft, yards of hair that were good for hiding your face in, if you wanted.

Nell rested her head on Yang and find that the hug did make her feel better. "Thank you," she said, stepping back gently after a few moments. "I'm in room 219 and is be grateful for any help you might offer."

“I’ll stop by tonight with some stuff for you,” Yang promised. “It might be a little big on you, but it’ll work for a few days while we get you sorted out.”

“Uh, I promise, I’ve got pants and stuff.”

"I am in your debt," Nell said, still a little shaky over all the kindness. "And I will be most grateful to have clothes that will cover me well."
