Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The tables and chairs had been scattered around the lawn - some near the food, some not, some in the shade, some not - and the food was ready for anyone who wanted to come by and greet the new people.

Enjoy your last picnic where shirtlessness will be enjoyable until next summer, folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, it's all edible," Hera assured her. "The burgers are pretty good." She pointed them out. "Like a sort of blander nerf on bread with vegetables and sauces. And they have a lot of sweet drinks with fizzy gas in them; those are good, too."

She thought about it. "The salsa is...it's sort of a dip, or a sauce? You can get it on things or just on its own with chips. It's spicier than most human food, though, and just a little sweet."

"Oh, that does sound good," Vette admitted. And then looked toward the table again. And then apologetically toward Hera. "Would you mind if we continued this conversation by the food? I haven't had a decent meal yet today."

In weeks. A decent meal in weeks.

Hera smiled and started over there. "Sure! There's always plenty at these things. Some people tend to put it away for later, too. And they have a lot of sweets. Seriously, I've never seen so many desserts in my life."

She got a plate and picked up a burger and some spicy chips for herself. "Where are you from? And...when? Has anybody warned you about that part yet?"

Vette grabbed a plate of her own, and was already piling it high with mystery food when Hera asked that question.

Which had her turning and giving her the weirdest look.

"Wait, when?"

Hera looked at her apologetically and spread her hands. "There's one girl here who I think is from a few years different from me. And a lady that was here a little while ago from about fifty years after. Those portals grab people from a lot of different times as well as worlds."

Vette was quiet for a few moments, and then offered, tentatively, "It's been twenty-six years since the Sacking of Coruscant?"

It was hard to come up with a better rubric of time than that, in her era. She hadn't been alive for it, but from the way the galaxy was now, it had changed everything.

"The sacking -" Hera blinked. "Okay, you're definitely from my future or far in the past, because it's never been sacked that I know of."

Her ancient history was a bit rusty.

"Back home it's year 25 after the Great ReSynchronization?" she offered.

"After the... what?"

Yeah, that one wasn't ringing any bells for Vette, either. She frowned a little.

"Maybe we can throw some pop culture around instead. Hello, My Name Is Vette, and my favorite popular cantina hit is Shapa Keesay? That sort of thing?"

"I haven't been great at keeping up with music," Hera said apologetically. "I prefer jizz, though." She sighed. "And don't mention that music to people around here; apparently that word means something entirely else."

"You know you can't say something like that and not tell a girl what that something entirely else actually is," Vette teased, grinning playfully. "Come on, spill."

Hera facepalmed. Then whispered into Vette's ear what it was.

And Vette, probably somewhat predictably... just burst into a fit of giggles.

Hera shook her head, laughing, too. "Isn't it the worst thing? I mean, who calls...never mind. Anyway, it's not at all the same thing."

"Good to know I won't be talking about music around here for a while," Vette decided, grinning as she heaped another few slices of cheese onto her plate. And some fruit stuff. And what was probably a cookie. "This place is so weird."

"It really is," Hera agreed. "And on the mainland, they've never even met anyone non-human. Fortunately, it's so far out of their way of thinking that if you go there, they'll just think you're wearing a costume."

"... A Twi'lek costume, with fully functioning lekku?"

Vette made a rude gesture with hers, shoving the tips of both into the small of her back, and then let them hang loosely behind her again.

"These backrocket worlds are so... weird."

Hera made a gesture of agreement, her expression rueful. "I don't claim it makes any sense. But since they think they're the only inhabited planet anywhere, I guess it does to them. They have a holiday coming up soon where everyone wears costumes. That's a good way to head over and see what it's like."

She snickered. "Last year Kanan painted himself green all over to match. Let me tell you, it is not a good color on him."

Yeah, Vette was trying to picture the cranky bus driver as a Mirialan guy, now.

... Nope. Not seeing it.

She shook her head, amused.

"Well, at least he tried, I guess?" It was kind of sweet in a... really weird kind of uncomfortable way. "I might have to keep an eye open for the holiday, though. I've only been here an hour and it's already weird feeling like I'm being stared at."

"We'll probably have an outing for it," Hera said. "And yeah, I know." She sighed. "Fortunately, it gets better once they figure it out, but it never stops being weird being with so many humans."

"At least back on Nar Shaddaa I had some other Twi'leks to hang around with," Vette sighed, picking up a piece of mystery fruit and inspecting it. Huh. It seemed to have a rind on it. Was that part edible? She supposed she'd find out... "I mean, you're here, and that's a huge relief, but we only just met. I don't want to be, I don't know... weird or anything about it."

"Don't worry," Hera assured her, "I get it. And you peel that one first," she said. "Kanan found that out the hard way. It's called, imaginatively enough, an orange."

Vette blinked at the fruit, and then at Hera, and then broke into another little laugh.

"Seriously? They just called it the color it is? Hello, I'm Azure, it's great to meet you, Chartreuse..."

Hera snickered. "Well, their planet is called 'Earth'," she pointed out. "Mostly they're not that bad, but there are a few things..."

"It's named ground," Vette agreed, setting her orange on the plate, and then picking up what she could only assume were a red, a yellow, and an orange-but-with-some-brown-and-green. "I bet they just call their sun 'sun,' too."

Yeah, kinda.

"Basically, yes," Hera said. "Or Sol, which is 'sun' in one of their old languages. But before you think it's all silly," she pointed at the fruits in turn, "apple, banana, and cantaloupe melon."
