Fun with Magic | Monday, 2nd period

Bob had only arrived, courtesy of Harry, the evening before. Now he stood straight and squinted at the students that had signed up for this class.

"Right, you lot. I'm Hrothbert of Bainbridge, but you can all call me Bob. I hope you're ready to have some fun."

Didn't he look like fun?

"Before we get started, introductions. I want your name, what sorts of magic you're used to, and any magical abilities - or anything else interesting - you may have yourself. You," he pointed at a random student. "Begin."

"I'm Norman Babcock," Norman said, still clearly distracted as he stared at the ghost that was teaching the class. "I work at the Magic Box in town, so I'm at least passingly familiar with the stuff we sell there. And, uh."

He looked around the room.

Oh boy.

"I'm a seer? I mean. I see. The dead. The spirits of the dead." He waved a hand around, a little flailingly. "I talk to ghosts."

And zombies. And there were visions and stuff, but he didn't want to get too far into detail. It was huge enough just saying that much out loud in front of his classmates.

"Oh, good!" Bob beamed back at him. "I'm sure a lot of spirits appreciate that. You should be used to helping out, so congratulations - you're my teaching assistant."

Norman blinked. And then sighed.

"Yeah, that sounds about right," he replied, clearly resigned to this.

After all, Bob wasn't wrong.

"Oh, do cheer up," Bob told him. "You already dress better than my usual assistant."

Dresden was a very low bar in that respect.

"... Thanks?"

Norman wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

"You're welcome."

"Oh, hey," Manfred said. "Me too!" He sounded way calmer about it, though.

Norman blinked over at Manfred at that, looking... puzzled. Maybe a little stunned.

"Wait... you do?"

That was either awesome, or he was completely pulling Norman's leg, and Norman had no idea which it was.

"Well, yeah," Manfred said. "I mean, I don't work at the Magic Box, I have a website where I tell people's fortunes, but I talk to ghosts. It runs in my family. Do ghosts hijack you sometimes? Because that sucks."

"It runs in the family," Norman agreed, perking up a little. "Mine too! But, uh, hijacked? Do you mean with visions? I've been shoved into visions before."

They had not been great experiences.

"No, visions are just visions," Manfred said, waving that off. "I don't get those very often." He could fake them with the best of them, though. "I mean, uh--" he leaned over and spoke softly, hoping their teacher wouldn't overhear and get any ideas, "you know, when the ghost hijacks your body."

Norman made a little o-shape with his mouth at that, and then shook his head.

"The ones back home don't really do things like that," he replied. "Or... they haven't tried on me, yet. One did try to, uh, kill me outright? But... that was an extenuating circumstance."

A little. A bit. It was complicated.

"I don't think the ghosts where I'm from can kill people," Manfred said slowly. "But I'll have to ask my grandma."

"She was strong," Norman supplied. "She'd been angry for three hundred years. And, before she died, she was like us."

He frowned a little.

"She died afraid and alone and angry, and she was consumed by it."

Bob could still hear. But as he was hoping that his surprise wasn't completely ruined for all the students, he was electing to ignore it.
