Fun with Magic | Monday, 2nd period

Bob had only arrived, courtesy of Harry, the evening before. Now he stood straight and squinted at the students that had signed up for this class.

"Right, you lot. I'm Hrothbert of Bainbridge, but you can all call me Bob. I hope you're ready to have some fun."

Didn't he look like fun?

"Before we get started, introductions. I want your name, what sorts of magic you're used to, and any magical abilities - or anything else interesting - you may have yourself. You," he pointed at a random student. "Begin."

Magically!

He's Bob.

Name, magic you know of, any magic or other abilities you have.

"All right," Bob said when that was over. "Today we're playing hide and seek." Yes, you were in a decent-sized but pretty hiding-place free classroom. He pointed at a small rock on the desk at the front. "That, is an invisibility spell. First person to grab it is the hider, and everyone else has to find them. And no leaving the room - I will still see you. Go!"

Be prepared for the sarcasm his username promises. Or not.

Okay, so I missed this guy.

Prince Sidon

Sidon's favorite week of classes! He nearly bounced on the balls ofhis feet while awaiting his turn, and then launched into his with the usual gusto and aplomb.

"Greetings!" he said. "I am Sidon!" And here it was, the ubiquitous pump of his fist across his chest, that bright and dazzling smile with just the right amount of gleam at the end of his fangs. "The Zora Prince! I myself do not possess any magical talents, none that I am aware of, anyway, but my bloodline does contain instances of healing magic, usually within females. My sister was phenomenally talented. Magic is present in many aspects of Hyrule, the land from which I hail, though many say it is not nearly as strong as it used to be in days long past. I am eager, though, to learn what might exist in the wider scope of all sorts of magic and, naturally, to have fun with such things that, in my world, are regarded with such seriousness and levity."

Norman Babcock

Norman was just kind of... there... staring... trying to wrap his head around what he was looking at. Which was clearly a ghost.

Clearly.

But everybody else could see him? And nobody else thought this was half as weird as Norman did? Right? Maybe he had finally lost his mind, here.

"I'm Norman Babcock," Norman said, still clearly distracted as he stared at the ghost that was teaching the class. "I work at the Magic Box in town, so I'm at least passingly familiar with the stuff we sell there. And, uh."

He looked around the room.

Oh boy.

"I'm a seer? I mean. I see. The dead. The spirits of the dead." He waved a hand around, a little flailingly. "I talk to ghosts."

And zombies. And there were visions and stuff, but he didn't want to get too far into detail. It was huge enough just saying that much out loud in front of his classmates.

Sorry, everybody. Norman was making a break for that invisibility spell. Mostly because after that succinct and completely coherent introduction of his, he was really looking forward to just disappearing for a minute or two.

... Even if Bob would see him quietly hyperventilating in the middle of the floor. That was still better than everyone.

Yang Xiao Long

"Uh, I'm Yang Xiao Long, and, like, while I get that magic is a thing here, it's totally not real where I'm from," she said with a shrug. "Though with training, you can control your Aura, which is a manifestation of your soul. I don't get a lot of the science behind it, because I haven't gotten to those classes in school yet, but mine manifests as kinetic absorption and redistribution of energy, and thermal manipulation."

"But no one at home has magic, that's just in fairy stories."

After class, there was a familiar trenchcoat lurking in the doorway. "Fuck, you again?"

That's Constantine for 'welcome back.' Mostly.

"Aren't you enthusiastic," Bob said, torn between amusement and sighing. "Hello, Prince Sidon. Is Zora your domain or your species? I'm familiar with neither."

"Oh, good!" Bob beamed back at him. "I'm sure a lot of spirits appreciate that. You should be used to helping out, so congratulations - you're my teaching assistant."

"You don't consider manifesting your soul to be magic?" Bob asked.

"Ah, you're still here, are you?" Bob asked in turn. That was 'good to see you'. More or less.

Norman blinked. And then sighed.

"Yeah, that sounds about right," he replied, clearly resigned to this.

After all, Bob wasn't wrong.

Whichever way he went with it, he might as well get used to it.

"It is both, actually!" Sidon answered, with so much pride in the announcement, you'd think he named them himself. "The Zora species from Zora's Domain in the Laraynu Moutnains of the great land of Hyrule! But do not concern yourself,"--because he sounded so concerned--, "about not having heard of it. No one here had before I started attending this school. It is very far and distant."

"They pay me, don't they?" John quipped easily, hands in pockets. "I do fuck-all, get a check, and mostly manage to stay out of trouble while serving as a cautionary example against fucking with magic."

Or lay low and hope the Lords of Hell had forgotten about him. Something like that.

As novel as it would have been to be invisible for a little bit, Sidon figured that he took up so much space that it wouldn't be difficult to locate him even with the spell, so he made no rush for it himself, especially after seeing Norman eager to try it out.

He did wonder, though, if his efforts to locate his invisible classmate might be better if he kept himself crouched or perhaps even crawled, though he would feel just silly doing the latter.

"I can't, like, use it to do whatever I want," Yang replied. "The way you can use your own energy -- your Semblance -- varies from person to person; I can't use it to teleport, although my sister can, and Ruby trying to lift a truck would be both hilarious and an accident waiting to happen. The only time she explodes anything is when she's just being regular walking-disaster-Ruby, not, like, 'I am in the middle of a fight and could use some explosions' Ruby."

"It's mostly genetic, and, like I said, it's all higher-level science classes I haven't gotten to yet. Magic is, y'know--" Yang waved her hands nebulously. "Magic. It does stuff that Aura could never do. We can't, like, ignore conversion of mass or change one thing into another or just give someone powers like in the stories. There's no curses or blessings or whatever."

Oh Bob could absolutely see that. But he was keeping mum. And not looking directly at Norman, so as not to give the game away.
