Jenkins' class yesterday had definitely caught Peridot's attention. Sure, the reptile had been interesting, but the extinction event was what had really given her reason to hunker in and want to learn more. How many of these events had Earth been through? Was it likely to happen again? If it was liable to be the Cluster all over again but from the outside instead of within, should she start making plans to retreat from the world and set up a home base elsewhere?

There was a small mountain of books on her desk on the topic, but a small mountain was more than enough to obscure a furiously studying Gem from sight entirely.
