Thanks to her conversation with Peridot in class, Tip spent the first chunk of her shift today looking up geology, specifically the way scientists had come up with to identify different minerals.

Well shit. Geologists did lick rocks after all. She was never going to hear the end of this.

"Yeah," Tip said, giving her a small smile even if she wasn't looking. "That's real great."

"Yeah," Peridot echoed, and then stood there quietly for a few more seconds before shaking herself out of it and looking up at Tip again all of a sudden. "So! Did you find anything else interesting about geological studies on Earth?"

HEY LOOK A TOPIC CHANGE.

Peridot didn't do caring and sharing time well.

"Well, some rocks are really really really really really old," Tip said.

"Billions of years" definitely required that many "really"s.

"Older than the Earth," Peridot agreed, smiling at that. "Meteorites that came here from elsewhere could be. And the volcanic rock that formed this world in the first place... some of that is still around, too."

She had a soft place in her heart for volcanic rock.

"Yep. And when your personal time-frame barely reaches 100 years? That's crazy."

Was it safe to say that Peridot loathed the human life expectancy?

Peridot loathed it. A lot.

"A hundred years," she echoed, and nodded, looking down at Pumpkin, now, who was content to sit and try to chew on her own foot. "That's not all that much at all."

"Yeah, but we pack in a lot."

"More than most Gems do," Peridot agreed. "It's really no wonder the Crystal Gems believe that Earth is a world worth saving."

And since she was one of them now too, hey, she fit right in.

". . . What's the difference between a Crystal Gem and a regular Gem?"

[era_two_triangle]

"The Crystal Gems were the rebel Gems who stood up against Pink Diamond in order to save the Earth," Peridot explained. "The original traitors to Homeworld. But... Earth's heroes. There's no real difference physically. It's... It's a mindset."

"Like a superhero team," Tip mused. "Like the Y-Men. I get it."

Oh, Peridot had no idea where to start with that one.

"... What's a superhero? What's a Y-Men?"

Just start with basically the whole thing! Problem solved!

". . . Right," Tip said. "So have you ever read a comic book?"

She was just gonna take it back even further. No biggie.

That would be a slow blink in reply. And then a small shake of her head to go with it.

"I'm pretty certain I've heard Steven talk about them...?"

"Well, I make them myself sometimes, so I'm definitely an authority." Tip, no. That was a very large kettle you were opening. "Here, I bet we have some in here somewhere. It'll be more fun to show you."

Peridot blinked, but nodded.

"And I learn better through experience as well," she decided. "Show me these... comic books."
