Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2018, Early Saturday Evening [Part 1]

As soon as the sun was down, everything was ready for the graduation ceremony to begin. The lawn of the school had been lit up with blue and gold lights, which reflected nicely off of the glitter scattered throughout the lawn. Yes, glitter was going to get all over everything, sorry.

There were chairs set up for all of the graduates, and plenty of seats for guests to come and watch. The weather was beautiful, cooling off after the hot, sunny day, and everything seemed quiet, calm, and normal. You know, for now.

Congratulations, Class of 2018! You made it to the end!

"Glad to hear that it's calming down a bit anyway," Kathy said. "I know a little bit about running a clinic during a crisis and it's--not fun."

Especially not when the patients had the possibility of turning into predators at any given moment.

"Did Dante ever get a chance to pass along my message to you?" she asked. "I wasn't sure if you were ever interested in having help around the clinic. Even just someone to clean and wash and fold sometime."

"I don't think he did," Kat said. Wryly, she added, "Probably my fault. I put him to work every time he visits. But... we can always use more help. There's a lot of people getting hurt out there."

Kathy wasn't entirely sure about that. Dante hadn't seemed too enthused at the idea when she'd brought it up in Limbo City. But she smiled and nodded anyway.

"No, that's good," she teased. "He needs to be put to work more often. I'm terrified of what the house will look like if I'm ever gone longer than a weekend and it's just them in charge of keeping it clean."

"Pizza boxes," Kat said dryly. "Everywhere. He might even create a few lifeforms."

"Back when I was in school, I used to wash his sheets," Kathy said with a small chuckled. "Because if I was going to be on them, I wanted them to be clean. I haven't actually asked how long it took him to notice they weren't getting laundered after I died. I'm willing to put money on it being a matter of months, though."

She rubbed idly at the tattoo on her inner wrist, seven tick marks in brown ink.

Kat's eyes dipped to her wrist, the movement calling her attention to it. But she said nothing.

"No one ever really told me what happened to you," she said. "... Not that you have to."

"It's kind of a long story," Kathy said. She glanced around at the strangers sitting near them, happy faces turned towards the stage. "And maybe not one for here and now. But...maybe later?"

She liked Kat, as little as she knew her. Wanted to get to know her better, outside of Dante. Especially if she was going to be moving to Limbo City, it would be good to know a few people outside of the folks she was sleeping with.

"Okay," Kat said easily.

It wasn't like she didn't understand.

"So how are you feeling now? Excited?" she said.

"Excited," Kathy confirmed. "A little nervous, too. Fandom graduations always come with a surprise at the end."

She'd missed hers, but it had held true for all the other ones she'd seen.

"Proud, too, even if that's kinda weird to say." But Dante had never expected to see this day. Funny how that worked out between the two of them. "And just a tiny bit apprehensive, because after today, things start changing."

She glanced sideways at Kat, uncertain if Dante had told her about his plans to come home.

"Because he's not in school anymore?" Kat asked.

Kathy nodded. "Exactly. And that opens up the wide world of 'what next?'" she said, deciding to play it vague and general for the moment. "He's not the run off to college type, but few people stick around the island for long after they graduate."
