Peridot had a pillow strapped to her forehead today.

Why did Peridot have a pillow strapped to her forehead today?

Because Peridot had learned the hard way that ice was slippery. She had also learned the hard way that ice was hard. And Peridot, who had never been great at walking on her natural feet without benefit of her limb enhancers in the first place, had done an almost comedic amount of skittering and flailing about before managing to retreat, fairly unscathed, back to the dorms to don some manner of protective equipment.

Sure, the ice was all on the streets, not in the library, but she wasn't taking any chances. Getting damaged because the island was being cute was not on her list of things to do today.

If anybody needed her, today she would be researching the construction of flamethrowers.

No reason.

The skates had been... well, they had been. Like most things, Rufus was competent enough with them to not look like a fool. He'd made it out unscathed to the library.

Dark Nation had stayed behind.

"You look like an idiot," he greeted, upon seeing the pillow.

"But I'm an idiot with a complete, undamaged gem," Peridot countered, looking at Rufus (with some difficulty) from under her pillow. "It's a functional device."

It was a pillow.

"It's not a device at all," he noted, amused. "It's a pillow."

Peridot squinted at Rufus a little more at that.

"It serves a particular purpose."

Ergo, device.

"But not the purpose it was intended for," he countered. "Nor is it mechanical or electronic, which the word 'device' is most commonly applied to."

"Most commonly, but not exclusively," Peridot argued. "And because I don't use it for the intended purpose, I've repurposed it for a function that's practical to me."

"The fact that you've strapped it to your head has hardly altered it's function at all," Rufus said, leaning against the desk. "It remains a soft, squishy thing to rest against. You're merely stretching definitions so that you can excuse your own inabilities."

Her inability to skate, he was assuming. Given everything.

Oh, Peridot was squinting so hard. So hard.

"If somebody has an inability, they adapt to it or they fail," she noted. "I'm not excusing anything. I'm adapting so that I can get on with my day."

"You took the easy way out," he said pointedly. "You could have endeavored to actually learn how to skate rather than pillow-strapping."

"... I had to get to work. There's a schedule."

Learning things took time, and she was trying to be responsible, Rufus.

"Please," Rufus said, "most people have not kept schedule this week. You could have taken the time to learn."

The look Peridot leveled Rufus with from beneath her pillow was distinctly unimpressed.

"Other people ignoring their responsibilities is no reason for me to do the same. I'm a Peridot. I have pride."

There was a long pause, and then she added, "And I don't know what a skate is."

Where would she have learned?
